Reckon we should be making a big pitch to Tom Clurey. He's a Vic, Key defender, very mobile and can use the ball, so he ticks a lot of boxes game wise. One year apprenticeship under the All Australian fullback and Dustin Fletcher and then step into Fletcher's role full time.

A combination of him, 17 and 37 (Maybe with us giving a pick back as well) would get a deal done IMO, and both sides would come out of it pretty well given the circumstances and Port's intent to be malicious campaigners

I'll answer that with a question? Has he done anything to lift his side in a game for GWS yet? Showing signs of maybe being a good solid player so far. Then again I haven't looked at him from an internal perspective (club-wise, not speculum-wise).

Port Adelaide and Essendon have investigated and discussed a radical plan - similar to the Nick Dal Santo deal of last year - to get Paddy Ryder to the Power and provide better compensation for the Bombers.

The AFL has indicated to both Essendon and Port that Ryder can have his contract voided by mutual consent of club and player, making him a free agent. He can then go to Port as a free agent, with the Bombers receiving a free agent compensation draft pick - from the central pool, not Port - in return.

The rules mean this selection is certain to be an end-of-first-round choice, immediately after Essendon's pick (currently 20)

Under the left-field plan, the Power would then trade its first pick (No. 17) to Essendon in a separate deal - exchanging either an Essendon player and/or picks. So Essendon would end up with picks 17 and 21 in return for Ryder and another player, or a combination of a later pick(s) and a player. Obviously, Essendon would want to give Port a player that it feels it can afford to lose.

The AFL has indicated, however, that this secondary deal must be "commercial" - and in line with the value of that draft pick. The value of pick 17, however, is a subjective judgment and it would be possible for Essendon to receive Port's first pick for a player that Essendon is happy to lose.

While Essendon checked with the AFL about whether Ryder could be made a free agent - with a compensation pick available, in the manner of any other free agent - the Bombers have indicated to Port that they still feel the Power is not giving up enough to make this deal happen. So they are reluctant to pursue this free agency avenue. The Dons still want a highly valued player in return for Ryder.

Not sure on the level of misc player, but I just have a feeling that the AFL will let this go and then heck us over when we try and trade a player not fitting to their standards of 17 and we will be in the $hit

Other clubs have done it. Compo is handed out willy nilly. Why shouldn't we get our snout in the trough for a change. The AFL took our draft picks and ****ed us already.

There's nothing wrong with the compo thing. But the "and then Port trades 17" side of things is pretty damn risky. The soon-to-be-delisted Kyle Hardingham for pick 17 should not be accepted. And if it gets rejected I would have thought it's reasonable for both sides to possibly face penalties...

yeah but it can't cut both ways, we're still down as 7th on the ladder, so compo should still be a pick after our first round selection (which would make it 13), even if we didn't have one.

Pat Keane himself has indicated that our indicative ladder position is still 7th for f/s bidding purposes (so any bid on Long coming after where our 2nd rounder would have been was matchable by our 3rd), so it should be the same for free agent compo
