Out for season

Essendon captain Jobe Watson has been ruled out for the rest of the AFL season with a shoulder injury, compounding the Bombers woes.

Watson hurt his shoulder in Essendon's loss to Hawthorn in round 13, but took to the field for his 200th AFL game in the damaging 110-point loss to St Kilda last weekend.

He exacerbated the injury in that defeat and is now set to miss the remainder of the season.

"It's disappointing any time, especially given the season isn't going the way we would have hoped," Watson said.

"When you can't be out there to help rectify it, it's disappointing."

Looks to me like a headclash. I don't see any contact to the shoulder. He doesn't grab it or wince on it or anything.

About time we ****ing admitted it. Stevie Wonder could see he's been playing hurt.

Doc Reid said he aggravated the injury against Hawthorn and carried it into Saints which completely ruined him. If it's wasn't his 200th I doubt he would've played, and he probably shouldn't have played anyway.

This is actually a good thing. Season is over anyway so we don't have a lot to play for. Now he can get the rest and recovery time he should've had 2 months ago, both physically and mentally.

I dunno. Looked to me the initial impact was to the head. But as I said, I was already skeptical so might be biased.

No he said he aggravated it early against St Kilda and that the injury occurred in the Hawthorn game. He hasn't been carrying this.

I've had countless dislocations and multiple shoulder surgeries, that is a classic subluxation. The angle of contact meant it wasn't dislocated completely, but it was very solid, jarring contact to the bicep/shoulder which slammed the joint out of place. You can see his whole arm shift whilst the rest of his body doesn't (too solid for his own good). He took the entire impact of Dureya to the arm/shoulder without torso support.

In contrast Dureyas arm was cushioned into his torso.

The head clash was secondary.

The majority of the time, if required, you can back up and play after subluxations. Could have a cleanup after the season. My guess is that was his approach, but after Sunday theyve all decided it's pointless given where the season is at and Jobe's own obvious fatigue.

Absolutely. Like you said, injuries are never a good thing but this does present an opportunity for the likes of Kav to spend more time in the actual centre of the ground and around stoppages. Aylett is another option, because now we can promote him.

Myers will come back in a couple of weeks, but this makes Heppell's job all the more tougher. Poor bloke, he's the only one capable of winning his own ball at the moment.

Essendon’s Jobe Watson will undergo shoulder surgery ruling him out for the rest of the season.

The Bombers Captain carried a shoulder complaint in to the match against St Kilda and aggravated it early in the game.

“It’s disappointing any time, especially given the season isn’t going the way we would have hoped,” Watson said.

“When you can’t be out there to help rectify it, it’s disappointing.”

Watson gathered nine possessions against the Saints and spent large parts of the match in the forward line.

“He went into the game with a shoulder injury and aggravated it very early,” Doctor Bruce Reid said.

“That of course seriously affected his form.

“His MRI unfortunately shows that he has an unstable shoulder and has significant damage.”

Essendon Coach James Hird said the absence of Watson would leave a significant hole.

“Jobe’s our Captain and one of the best players in the competition, so to lose him for the rest of the year is very disappointing for the team but more so for Jobe,” Hird said.

“He certainly wanted to come back and play some good football but unfortunately that won’t happen this year.”

I have no problem with McKenna not playing and being held over until next season. We need to make a call on Aylett this year, hence, he should get a game first.

i must admit I am sceptical..jobe didnt favour his arm at all and if he injured it against hawthorn why didnt they scan it just for precaution? It doesnt really matter anyway. I just think the club is going out of its way to tell porkies. "here is the incident where it happened" jobe looked really relieved and relaxed in his interview. hope he renews his love for the game in time for 2016.

This is my fault. Last time I bought Jobe into my sc team he did his hip and missed 8 weeks. Its happened again both times he only lasted 2 games. Sorry Jobe.
