Tip: the voltage wires are not the correct colour

Are they ever? If all the bomb squad had to do was cut the red wire every time, there'd be no need for "experts". Any Tom, Dick or Harry could do the job- unless he was colour blind, of course.

I guess when you look at the rest it does kind of add up .

But then again a handmade clock looks like a bomb as well

I went to uni in Canberra and would fly home for the break during first semester, and then the mid-year semester break, and I can't remember if it was the first or second trip home but there was a few of us from the same college who would catch the same fight to Melbourne and one of them then flew onto Adelaide (this is 2002, the good old days when there was no direct flights between Canberra and basically anywhere other than Melb, Syd or Brisbane).

We all checked in our baggage and then went through security, and as we went through the guys stopped the bag of one of the other girls as they found a pocket/utility knife down the bottom. This is less than a year after Sept 11, so high security alert, and the question he asks her is "Are you flying or just seeing the others off? Because if you are just seeing them off you can keep it". She was lucky enough to be able to have it added to her checked baggage - but I have never forgotten that security guy and all 3 of us where rather shocked by him almost just waving things away.

That's very slack. Imagine if she'd been able to just slip it to someone who WAS flying.

My sister was mortified on her first flight when she set off the flashing lights of the metal detector. She panicked, though she knew she had nothing on her, but the lady asked her to take off her sandals- which happened to have their soles reinforced with metal.

And my hubby gets a bit sick of taking off his belt and boots to go through- I guess the inconvenience is small compared to that of an actual bomb or weapon being brought on board.

So these became my standard daily wear for the next 3 years at uni, including flights home - so it meant having to take off my the books, I also have to take off my belt each time but I did learn a trick a couple of years back with the cargo belts, just unhook the buckle & take that off instead of the whole belt. And considering that black was often the colour of my clothes, it may have had something to do with me getting asked on 3 consecutive flights to take the explosive test thingy - as soon as they look at me now I just stand on the spot and say "yep, go for it".

I did decided before my first trip to the states though that I should replace the steel cap boots as they may not be the most sensible choice over there, and on my last trip, when I did unhook just the buckle from my belt the women suggested I take the whole belt off because if I did set off the alarm I would have to be given a pat down. So the whole belt came off, but I didn't even think about the fact that the pants I was wearing had a zipped hip pocket which set it off anyway - so the women walks up to me, hand already gloved and sticks out her first 2 fingers to pat over the zipped up pocket.

As you said, its a small inconvenience compared to what could happen without all these security measures and its an inconvenience I am happy to live with.

Can't believe an extra metal zip would set it off- all jeans have metal zips.

I used to walk through security with 5 young kids so my number invariably came up. They don't test kids under 18 (I think that's the age limit) so the nearest adult got dragged in.

My middle son was working in drill and blast over the past two years but he now carries a blast ticket to get him off the hook if their detectors show the presence of explosive.

Thank goodness they didn't have those checks when I was working- I always had ANFO on my boots from wandering around the blast holes before and after a blast. Because I wasn't on a blast crew, I wouldn't have carried any paperwork.

I've had to empty coins out of my pocket. You can't be too careful, you know- I might bribe the pilot to go off route, using my small change!

I think my favourite security situation I have found myself in was when I flew from LA to Singapore on Singapore Airlines and we went via Tokyo. On the plane they had these little bottles of water (the size of kids juice bottles), so people kept getting those during the flight and especially before we landed in Toyko so there was something to drink while going through immigration & waiting to get back on the plane.

After we got off the plane, those of us getting back on had to go down 1 passage, up stairs and turn left here etc, to go to the security area where they would re-scan our bags and we would walk through the machines again (we have all done this at LA, and those guys take things very seriously there). As we approach the security area there are signs saying "no liquids allowed" - so everyone who had these little bottles of water (open or unopened) had the choice, drink now or throw out. The bins were lined with these bottles sitting on the top of them as people didn't want to throw out unopened bottles of water - there would have been 50+ of them that were just wasted.

Yeah, that's a shame about so much waste. But you know that, for health reasons, they'll all get tossed anyway.

Well I had completely forgotten to take my TAFE work out of my backpack. I was quite shocked and embarrassed when they pulled them out and asked me why I had them in my backpack . They asked me what the circuit board was and I told them it was an unfinished temperature sensor.

Thankfully they let me keep all my items but they had to be stored with my other bag in the cargo part of the plane. You can judge for yourself if this looks like a bomb or not:

Every single time I fly I always have to take the explosives test

It's just ludicrous! What would a fat, middle aged, crazy cat lady know about explosives? + when I'm asked my occupation I either put 'Social Butterfly' or 'Crazy Cat Lady' I don't understand it? But, every efffing time I have to take the explosives test
