Training 2015/16 preseason training (discussion)

Id agree there is not much to report.
There was lots of stoppage and short kicking work at the start of the session, with a significant time spent in near full ground match sims to finish the session.

I made an effort to follow what Weller was doing today. In the Wednesday session I noticed he wasn't winning much of the ball in the all ground drills in match simulation. Today he struggled again and seemed to have his hands on his hips a lot (catching his breath).

It was kinda strange to see Dawson and Sonny paired up in the kicking drills. Even more surprising was that Zac D kicked the ball better than Sonny.

Pav dominated when matched up on Tanner or Silvagni in match sims. Pav looks terrific.

Langdon looked fantastic again linking up play brilliantly.

Hurley did really well when matched up on Pav and also ran off his man on a number of occasions. In one significant piece of play Hurley spoiled and then sprinted to receive the ball and then completed a perfect thirty metre chip kick. The most impressive part was his speed into space.

Collins body work in marking drills was terrific today. He outworked Tabs a number of times and also took a couple of marks forward of the play. From what I have seen his kicking is excellent.

Ballas was running all over the field today. He made a number of errors taking on his man. The person most responsible for the team doing extra penalty push-ups (which are done by the entire squad) is Ballas.

I agree Captain Mundy looked awesome out there. Hill too continues to look terrific. Sheridan also looks fantastic.

Salim would be happy to know Mora did some outstanding work playing as a tall defender including a brilliant mark in the goal square.

The recovery group still consists of Fyfe, Johno, Yarran, Clarke,Bennell, A.Pearce, De Luca and Apeness. Ibbitson is also not training.

Great effort, thanks Sherrif:thumbsu::thumbsu: So Mora still burning up the track:)

yah Mora still looook the good, kicking off a bit but compare to ballas today he is pretty good but in one transition play look like argue with hannath( the dude complain Mora not handball to him) . your irish continue to improve and his kicking not bad at all. Uebergang and Collins if avoid injury will be good for thunder and backup option.

I attended training today. After a pleasant chat with DannytheDoorman by the clubhouse, I went round and sat under the Morton bay figs on my own.

Maybe it was just my mood, but I found it an uninspiring training session. There was lots of kicking drills and plenty of ball movement, and there was nothing specific that was wrong, but nothing much done that seemed impressive.

I never thought I would say this, but it was the first time ever when Sonny did not TTHD. Usually his class, enthusiasm and leadership make him sparkle. For me, he did not sparkle today.

It is hard to pick up who's who under caps and zinc, but I did not see Croz or Sutty on the track today. Bennell came out to walk a lap or two and Balic was working on running with a fitness guy.

There were a few good things. Before doing running, Sandi took part in kicking drills. His kicking was excellent. Precise and well weighted. He does not take long to get boot to ball, he really should kick more.

Langdon continues to impress me. He has neat skills and is pacey and evasive.

And finally, TTHD. Mundy looked several classes ahead of everyone else today. He cruised around, looking in second gear, waltzed away from clearances, laid tackles, kicked perfectly, took intercept marks etc etc. TTHD by a country mile.

PS Sandi looks really fit and athletic.

Crozier and Suttcliffe were out there.
Crozier was impressive today in trying conditions.

Not only the eminent salim I'll wager.Absolutely the best news of the off season for mine is the way Mora is travelling(followed closely by the signing of one Harley Bennell).

Also continued development from the Irish is not unexpected and very welcome indeed;fecking great!!

Be they kings, or poets, or farmers,
They're a people of great worth,
They keep company with the angels,
And bring a bit of heaven here to earth.
We've got the tartan we need some Celt!!
A raging talented Celt's fine with me.
He had a professional approach as an amateur.

Interesting observations regarding Weller but not surprising or distressing really.I believe he is a good chance to evolve into a valued cog in our juggernaut midfield in time, but it does youngsters no service to burden them with overblown expectation.
Great report as usual sherrif :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Jedi will be mad at me but I still think Weller a bit overrated.;)

I think it's how you retain and develop yoof that's the issue meima ,not how high their raw talent rating is.
Intelligent and hard nosed development is key.
We've improved at this markedly over the journey, and for all the hackneyed characterisation of RTB as some blind pragmatist I believe if he's not fishing he's mending his nets.

I still hope there is some balance, blakely and grey and Langdon deserve some exposure against Carlton ,sun even giant they will not be perfect but will be good for future run. Also Collins will be good back up cover if both Alex struggle with injury.

Agree. Potentially a #2 and a #4 former draft picks coming in to our team this year is pretty exciting. Trying not to get too enthusiastic about both but if Bennell gets his body sorted and learns the Freo game plan and Mora continues this trend of TTHD the opposition teams should be getting worried. Wishing for a relatively injury free 2016.

I still hope there is some balance
Agreed. To make the whole enterprise balance is what it's about!
I think we've got the strongest list we've had;how we blood the yoof determines our club's future in many ways.
As I've suggested I don't like to declare anyn00b deserves exposure in a particular game, but I agree blooding youngsters is a horses for courses and pick the right game escapade.
I like the look of Collins a lot.
But I'm a Freo stalwart,I'm hopeful about most of our list.
Only Apeness is getting both worrying and contradictory press.
I'll stick with the list managers on that one.
I've seen him at Peel and he's got all the physical and mental tools to become a weapon if his body permits it.

Great effort, thanks Sherrif:thumbsu::thumbsu: So Mora still burning up the track:)

Mora's progress is really exciting. I can definitely see him in Purple mid year.
His training goes from strength to strength. A bloody massive bonus for us if Mora can get back to what he was.
Add Bennell and Fyfe and it's going to be fantastic.

Thanks Meima, say hello to all the watchers next time you are down there. :thumbsu::)

Very relaxing game AFL.
Barra will take a half-back-hammock onto the ground cos Hurley destroys defenders with repeated 80 metre leads to every area of the ground.
Dave will have to scull to drink his allocated 2 Mojitos a quarter.
That's part of his skipper's KPIs.

I think Mundy can play another two years after this contract runs out, he will be older but he wasn't ever a burst athlete and can relax on half back.

Mundy is like Pav in terms of resilience. He rarely gets injured or if he does , he plays through it.
I reckon 2018 will be his last year.

At least he has committed to a haircut and shave.
