But then that will get shortened to 'who' and it will be a right mess when the commentators start saying 'who's on the bench'.
They already do the Whats (Watts) on the bench part of it...

Allow me to ask this question. What do those of you who are super high on Dylan Buckley see in him? I know there's a number of you that are including MEB_ and HARKER who just listed him as a hopeful top 6 player at the club in a few years.

The numbers so far tend to support what I think of him - that he's a fringe player who isn't as hard as what he should be. He doesn't win a lot of the football (he had one game where he got to 20+ possessions last season) and his tackle count isn't as high as it should be to compensate (he's at 2 a game including 6 games of 4+ but that means he had 8 of 18 games where he had either one or zero tackles so in essence close to zero impact in half of his games). He's 23 next month so he's heading into the absolute prime years of his career.

Bucks appears to be a great young lad who is very, very likable (yes, I've watched the videos) but more than that and at this stage I just don't see it.

So what is it that people love about him aside from his likability and the father-son status. Most players who are or become guns have shown a lot more at his age.

I don't mean to be rude in this post so please do not take it that way. I'm genuinely interested.

Despite a lack of tackles, he plays at a hard and fast pace (Tony Greig would have liked that), takes the game on with ball in hand, has very good pace and has bobbed up for some great goals. His first kick 8n AFL was super class off the left foot, and I'll never forget that snap against the Eagles right when the team was lifting. Hasn't ever been short of courage to fly back with a ball to take the mark and has a good mindset for a young guy.

He's got very good footy tools and has shown bits of brilliance (goal from the pocket etc). This year will hopefully be one of consistent good footy and I reckon he will produce it if given the chance.

I've listed him as a hopeful and not a definite and that's only because of the association he has with the club.

Early days of course, but even at this stage I'm somewhat more confident of Jack Silvagni making it, than I am Buckley. Why? Jack can follow instructions.

Always more than a little scary when a player has been in the system for four full seasons and a fifth preseason and you can still make that claim. What's happening there, Harks? Any idea?

Well, it's just an opinion really.
Buckley will go full pelt at the contest as we all know, but he can do it somewhat unaware of the context.

From my understanding, Jack is more a thinker and understands directives.
That doesn't mean to say he'll be a better player but he may 'get it' sooner than others.

I wasn't that keen on Jack initially but the more I felt to understand him, the more I wanted us to take him.

Hi

Is anyone able to give me an update on Jayden Foster? I thought he would be better value in the forward line than some others.

Thanks.

What role do you think Mckay will play this year? What do you think is a realistic target for games in his first season?

I was high on Harry before he broke out last year and have picked him as my player. I'm expecting him to play five to ten games (I was going to state eight to twelve but erring on the side of caution) as a third tall who gets periods during each game as a leading KPP. Anything more than that without his selection being because of a team decimated by injuries and I'd be elated. KPP takes time and he was a bottom ager.

I said this over on TC, figure it's worth mentioning here.

We could have picked up Mitch Brown, Sam Grimley (or another kid in the draft), Shaun McKernan, Gach Nyuon and Caleb Daniel instead of - in order:

Rowe (2014 new contract)

Gorringe (DFA)

Tutt (PSD)

Glass-McCasker (rookie draft, look this is a little harsh but also look at Mabior Chol; I think these two kids have been massively underrated just because they're Sudanese, and that's a cultural grey area that clubs might incorrectly put in the 'too hard' basket)

and Jones (pick 46, could have also been Gregson, Teia Miles, Oscar McDonald and Harris Andrews).

Now we can play 20-20 hindsight all day, but that's a list of names that was on our radar at those points in time, with the only truly contentious call being Rowe vs. Brown (I think I argued for trading out White and replacing him with Brown at the time or shortly after the off-season).

More and more the difference between these picks at the bottom of the draft and from other club's delisted is about finding the mentally capable types and given them the boost of confidence and direction that they need, and we seem to fall flat on our faces at the first hurdle.

I suppose this could just as easily go in the incompetency thread.

How would any of them have developed at our basket-case club?
Well 3 of them have been at Essendon for all of five minutes, another one has been there a season, and Caleb Daniel would have turned out roughly the same as he is at the Dogs; he's got the right work ethic.

Just showing what happens when you box yourself in with the winning combination of longer-term contracts and mediocre positional depth.

Whiley backers, what do you see in him again that convinces you he is senior AFL standard??

Strength?
Pace?
Kicking skills?
Set shot for goal?

Definately wasnt up to scratch yesterday, but from all reports has had a killer preseason and has impressed many. Hopefully yesterday was just an off day.

The thing about killer pre-seasons (though I hope this diminishes over time), is that it's largely about athletic prowess, specifically aerobic prowess.

Guys that can run all day and complete simple drills are great, but it's even better if they can execute skills intelligently at high speed while under genuine pressure, and if they can run quicker/reach higher than the other guy.

Having so many senior players out will impact on the output of fringe players who may be more comfortable working off others rather than setting the agenda.

Unfortunately I agree with this. I like Dylan and hope he makes it but I think this is crunch year for him. Still has not proved himself and in truth is no different to Tutt yet one gets the boots laid in after each appearance and the other doesn't.

Disagree. The Dogs midfield depth is astounding. They more than made up not having one of their out and out gun mids in Tom Liberatore for an entire season for example. Everyone knows that if you take out one of our top mids we're screwed harder than what we are. Caleb would have been required to bare much greater responsibility in our team and he wouldn't have been able to develop almost without pressure like he has for the Dogs.

What I'm saying is he is exceptionally skilled and would have progressed well with us, which is why still got drafted despite being 5'6".
