I believe we have done damn well out of the McEvoy trade (as did the Hawks) and it could get even better as all of Savage / Acres / Dunstan continue to improve and contribute to the Saints.

We do not need to buy in to the victim / Saints are hopeless line that gets trotted out our trading and drafting over the last couple of years has been (in my opinion) been damn good and can only be judged in a couple of years.

I agree our trading and drafting the last few years has overall been good, just think we buckled on the Carlisle deal

We will agree to disagree!

I realize that the reporting will continue to be along the lines of what you are saying. Even to 'why did the Saints go for Carlisle in the first place; and lost pick 5' (have heard this from mates continually from mates and the press). This continually leaves out that we have Gresham (a round 1 pick) as well and the fact that Carlisle is an investment - these do not always pay off straight away.

He is a damn good Key Position player who we now have for next year on and Gresham who will continue to develop. This argument does not get take on as it is not straight forward as was the fact the we did not trade McEvoy for Savage we also got Dunstan and Acres this did not and does not get reported

Its going to take several years ( as is the case for any draft related discussion ) but i expect at the end no one will be saying we have lost by having Gresham AND Carlisle rather than just parish or whoever.

Yeah, saw that.
Goos to get an update. 3 days a week at work and training alone with an ex AFL footballer.

In contact with Richo and sone of the players regularily.

Nice to see him on track
 
as good as it is to see him training regularly my mate saw him punching a few darts at a pub the other night, i know a lot of players do as well but nevertheless...

Damn - you'd think he'd either be doing yoga or sitting quietly in the local library. Maybe taking some cross stitch lessons on a Sat night.

Not exactly easy to do so either. I don't doubt he probably has tried, but if it were easy we wouldn't have organisations like Quit to help people do it.

Although to be completely fair I'm of the sort to see a smoker and if I even sense a smell of the stuff tell them where to go and to come back when they're considerate of others.
 
I think, to an extent, we've got to learn to embrace the big larrikin within.

It's the only way we'll ever love him as one of ours. Plenty of time for maturing etc. sure but It's kinda just the sort of bloke he is clearly. Simple old fashioned footballer who loves a beer, a smoke and having a good time. So long as It's not to excess, which I'm sure It's not being a professional athlete and all, is it really that much of a crime?

No worse than some of our past (possibly current) players. Just more public.

Some have made calls for a badboy or two. 'A team of choirboys don't win a premiership' etc. while we've focused so heavily on character recently. I know I've thought it.

Well, here he is.

*Obviously this would be helped IMMENSELY by him kicking some arse once he does get on the park for us. He can punch a dart at halftime for all I care so long as he's flying and clunking game-saving marks with DEM BIG BUCKETS.

oh 100% i'm not saying it is easy to quit - i don't smoke but i have friends who do and i've seen them struggling to quit, if he cut back and slowly tried to stop then it would be great for his personal health obviously in the long term but to hear that he just sits there smoking ciggy after ciggy - not saying he always does, but that's what was happening the other night, isn't any sort of indicator that he's at least trying. but then again, i'm not in any position to say he should quit or how easy it is, that's not my place and i'm not an expert so i won't say anything else on the matter
 
The difficulty of quitting is a myth - it's about wanting to quit and knowing how to modify the habit. Gum, patches - they're a scam.

But that's irrelevant, the point is if he smokes it's not the end of the world. I just want him to get through this year and keep motivation, dedication and ability. Want him to come out and be an asset in the 2017 season.
 
Cowboy Neale and a host of others used to hide in the toilets for a ciggie or two at half-time. Think they did it in the Grand Final!

I hate cigarettes, and have never smoked. He would be better off without them of course. But if it just social.....who's to say it doesn't relax him? Must have been a stressful few months.

If Carlisle smokes he would be a social smoker no doubt. This is a hard habit to stop as it's related to other habits, specifically drinking.

Rubbish it is a myth. Worst most insidious addiction goibg around.

If he's a social smoker its not as bad but smoking reduces lung capacity by 10-20% which is why aerobic sports and smoking don't mix well but its something they can worry about when he gets back to the club right now I'm just happy if he doesn't go of the rails and stays fit
 
Say we didnt trade for Jake Carlisle. Who would we have taken?

Pick 5 became pick 6 after the Swans matched Demons bid on Callum Mills.... So that leaves Francis, Ah Chee, Milera, Gresham, etc

Pick 24 became pick 29 after all the early Academy bids were matched..... So that leaves Morgan, Redman, Hibberd, Sier, Clarke, Bonner, Balic, Mathieson, etc

Our 3rd round pick shifted down from around pick 44 to Pick 40 due to other clubs picks being lost though academy bids & we took Brandon White


Are any of those possible combinations actually better than Gresham, White & Carlisle?
