Player Watch Jack Frost (Traded to Lions 2016)

So we play him on the wing or up forward or anywhere other than defence? I am not sure his kicking or marking skills are good enough to allow him to play anything other than a negating role.

I think his run and carry improved against the Tigas so perhaps not as 1 dimensional as some suggest and as others have suggested exposure in other positions at VFL level might enhance his defensive capacity. First and foremost at the moment though he needs to regain some touch.

I'm just wondering if it happened with someone like Josh Bruce. I believe he was struggling as a key back at GWS, and Saints played him as a key forward. He's looking pretty good atm.
I think Bruce was recruited as a forward by GWS but they had a lot of high profile KP forwards on the list.

"No" to being a modern day Presti?

I know Presti is spoken about in reverent tones, and he did play in a successful team ...

... But you gotta admit that Presti contributed absolutely zero to our offensive gameplan? How **offensive** can a bloke who averaged 6 possessions a game possibly be???

As for their defensive games ... I admit that's contentious.

I reckon Frost is as good - all the more so taking age / experience into account. But I accept that others disagree.

Presti beat his man.

Frost does not.

If you can bank on a Presti doing his job on all comers you can work a defensive and offensive structure and plan around that.

As I said, it's contentious ...

Back in 2010 (and before) a Full back simply stuck to their full forward. Jonathan Brown once described playing on Presti was a bit like towing around a caravan.

It's 2016 and full backs aren't allowed to play that way anymore. They're expected to zone off their man and pitch in to defend other match-ups.

IMHO, Man on man, shoulder to shoulder, Frost is equal to Presti. You disagree and that's cool.

Something else has changed in 2016 - the deliberate out of bounds rule. The boundary is no longer the friend it used to be for players like Frost. He needs to go off and upskill and be re-programmed in the seconds. Reid's availability is allowing him to do that.

Today teams typically have a lot more effective paths to goal than just Presti's man.

We're now in an era when players like Eddie Betts and Chad Winguard and Alex Fasolo can and do kick bags.

I think Frost tries his absolute guts out every week for the club. I also think that he lacks the required skills to survive long term in today's AFL.

He's got great speed but not great skills. He is very athletic but lacks real composure when he finds the ball in his hands. He has great determination and gives it his all but doesn't really have what you'd call a football brain and struggles to read the play.

At best I think Jack Frost will always be considered an honest toiler or battler who gives his all but will never really reach any great heights.

Lastly, I think the thread is about a topic worth discussing, but the first post by the OP is in poor taste. It's really not constructive at all.

Yep...spot on with your assessment(s)....

It's most definitely form.

St.Kilda have Reiwoldt, McCartin and Bruce. 3 talls. Normally we would DEFINITELY need Frost for this game. So the fact that he's been dropped for a game he has a perfect matchup for should tell you something about how deplorable he's been.

No - of the changes Howe will take Gaults spot and all the others CANNOT play on talls like Frost.
So it's pretty simple - had he been omitted for a tall defender you would be correct.
So he's been dropped due to no matchup.

Please make your case for him being deplorable - he made a couple of mistakes last week - and the whole team was bad against the Swans.

He is more than capable as a young tall defender and will only get better with experience like Rance did.
All players need time remember how bad Ben Johnson was in his early days !

Frost's problem is we've already got our Presti

he has all the physical attributes to be a great player but I think as many have highlighted he lacks a bit of composure and makes poor decisions. certainly not the end for him though.

Just a shame he lacks all the skills of an AFL footballer.

All he is is a good athlete who has closing speed and can punch.

May as well be an american import because that's how coordinated he looks with ball in hand. Liability.

What are you going on about?

Didn't realise Goldsack was short.

But he has a matchupo_O

Read this thread, you'll find plenty of cases.

Or he won't get better just like he hasn't been getting better since he was drafted. Your making this call off of what?

All players need time remember how bad Ben Johnson was in his early days !

Remember how good Jason Cloke was early days!

I think the zone frustrates me more than anything at the moment. The amount of times Richmond were able to zip a little bullet pass in to a free man inside 50 last week because our men were to busy guarding space rather than their opponent was astonishing. If they'd actually kicked straight at goal they'd have slaughtered us.
The story of the last few years ..

2017- Brown, Reid, Keeffee, Frost.

What is our best outcome going forward? Frost is a better defender than Keeffee, but Keeffee is surer with ball in hand.

What is the best Keeffee or Frost can get us in a trade?

Some really shit posts in this thread. Frost has given plenty over the last two years and will no doubt give plenty more when called on. The man bleeds black and white.

To all the disespctful arsemongers I say this...fuble off you bunch of motherfubling fuble witts.

Brown is our modern-day Presti, yet even he has admitted that the defender of 2016 has to be able to attack as well as defend his man.

I'm a big fan of Frost usually, I think he's our best defender when it comes to covering for his teammates and coming off his man but as often lamented tends to get caught out against his own opponent.
