What are the odds of the first round being a complete **** up as well? Can guarantee Optus won't have everything in place to meet demand.

I have Optus and would get for free but it runs out in June and I'm not staying with them regardless of the EPL. Their service here is that pathetic I had to buy a backup Telstra sim for all the times I have no service. Tried to get out of the contract too because of the poor service and no go despite the piece of shit that sold it to me saying they had 90% of Telstras coverage and would be matching in 24 months, both absolute lies. They are scum.

Foxtel will have the right to play matches featuring some of the more well supported English sides on 12 hour delay. Better than nothing and might keep some of the more casual football supporters happy but I'd imagine most people in here won't be satisfied without live football. Personally I'll be looking at my options because getting Optus for internet or mobile is not particularly appealing given the poor network coverage and quality of service I've received from them in the past.

Right now I'm watching Foxtel on my TV. There's no PL on being a Wednesday afternoon GMT but I just flicked over to ESPN and they have the ATP Masters 1000 tennis live in glorious HD. Djokovic vs Coric. I'm all set up to watch, record etc.

I'm also on my laptop. If I want to watch a run of the mill 360p video on Youtube chances are I'll need to pause it at least once. I rarely get better download speeds than 400 KB/s and the ping is all over the place. I've been with Optus previously and it's no better.

According to Optus their wireless broadband does not extend to my area, nor does cable.

So the only way I can watch the PL is to pay for a service I don't want that isn't up to standard anyway.

Whoever works in Strategy at Optus is going to be joining Centrelink in a few months. FFS.

I'd love to see the financial forecasting that Optus have done.

$200m over 3 years for the rights = ~$67m per year.

Existing customers paying $85 a month or more get the service for free. Those paying less pay the $15. Those on prepaid can convert to postpaid but that isn't new revenue, just locked in revenue for 24 months.

$15 a month x 12 months = $180 per customer per year. $67m / $180 = 372k customers
$85 a month x 12 months = $1020 per customer per year. $67m / $1020 = 65k customers

As a rough guess I'd say they'd be banking on at least 100-150k new customers to break even on the whole thing.

Foxtel can go get ****ed. They charge ****load to have no champions league and now no premier league. And then they complain to the government about people pirating. Surely they would have learnt from the demise of the TV networks that if you treat consumers like shit they access media without paying.

Not sure they'll struggle with high levels of demand. I don't think enough people will even switch over for that to happen

Not Foxtels fault that ESPN lost the UCL rights, regardless from next season they have UCL back through beIN plus many other leagues. They've actually added extra value for no extra costs.

Sure they dropped the ball with the EPL but shit happens in silent auctions, they weren't to know Optus would blow everyone out of the water.

How have they dropped the ball?

They didnt just pull a number out of the sky with their bid. They obviously bid what they thought would be profitable to them and it lost

Agreed, based on that graphic posted earlier there's no way Foxtel could have predicted Optus would bid that high.

How? They are the leading sports broadcaster in the country, they failed to keep the rights to a very big sport, possibly the biggest sporting league in the world, thus dropped the ball.

They bid not much more than they had previously paid, they probably thought they wouldn't have actual competition, I have no doubt if the auction was public they would have outbid Optus, after all this is company with billion dollar deals with other sports.

If Optus bid was forecast to lose money why would Foxtel bid that high. Look at the graph from a few pages back, Optus have gone against the trends set in two other countries in the region and more than doubled the offer when in fact the rights have got cheaper elsewhere. Foxtel isnt a charity service, they're there to make money. If a bid of 60m is going to lose them money or even break-even over the 3 year period it is bad business practice to make the bid.

They knew Bein were bidding so its not like they thought they had it won easy either. If the public bid came in from Optus bein and Foxtel both would have laughed in their face

Optus bid is forecast to lose money because they don't have a satellite service and rely on streams. No chance they would have lost money bettering Optus, just check out how much they are paying for the A-League rights, currently it's a four year 160m deal which expires next year, this is expected to go up once the new bidding starts soon as other networks have shown interest. beIN also bid less than Foxtel who bid slightly higher than what they currently pay, frankly as expected the three players were Foxtel, beIN and Optus and both beIN and Optus weren't expected to win, so Foxtel underbid on value and got blown away significantly, as I said, in a public auction Foxtel retains the rights, perhaps adds a dollar or two to subs and aren't all that concerned.

The new A League rights could surpass (as expected) what Optus are paying for the EPL, which Foxtel should win.

I think with this option to watch and record the game in HD 12 hours later I'd probably be happy if I had to use a dodgy stream for live games. Will wait and see what kind of deals they actually come out with regarding internet and Fetch TV though, with all this backlash they might actually be forced into some heavy discounts!

You really think doubling what they pay for the EPL rights is good business?

Of course they could have bid a big higher but nowhere near what Optus did. They would have had a model that would have had a range that they could bid and make money. Did they low ball within that range? Probably. Would Optus' bid have been in that range? Probably not.

Businesses are all about increasing profit margins that just doesnt happen if you pay overs for products. The simple charge people more model is a flawed unless its a product that is integral to what they offer. Enough people use Foxtel not for EPL for it not to be integral enough for them to make stupid decisions

"While you'll need to be an Optus customer to get all the EPL action, Optus research shows that close to two in three (63 per cent) football fans, who are not already Optus customers, are out of contract for at least one of their fixed broadband or mobile services," Optus managing director of marketing and product Ben White said.

"We're confident that when these fans see our range of great value EPL-ready plans, they'll be convinced that now is the right time to switch."

Why is doubling the pay stupid business? If that's the value then that's what it is. Again it's nothing that a sneaky one or two dollar plan increase wouldn't have covered.

They are going to pretty much double the price for the A League, which isn't that big of a league, they just paid over 1.8 billion (with others) for the NRL rights, they are over a billion for AFL rights, you really think 60m for the EPL would have bothered them?

Curious to know how much they are going to be paying all up after bringing beIN into the Foxtel package and clubs own channels.

A-League doesnt broadcast in the graveyard shift.

If something is going to bring you max $40m of revenue why would you spend $60m on it?

Charging the customer base the difference isn't going to work

If they bid $1b for NRL & AFL they do it because they know each of them is going to bring in more than that in revenue.

If EPL isn't worth $60m in revenue you just don't bid that much for it. Pretty simple really
