Autopsy Player Review - 2016

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

I get he was injured, but he isnt a 19yo who has time on his side to write off a whole season and not have it go against him.

Very good player when fit and going. What he showed us when he was fit will probably get him another year to try and get back to playing, I feel.

Why don't you contribute one then?
A
Performed as a leader on-field, these guys willed themselves to deliver at critical moments for the side and always played their role as they did so

Weitering, Cripps, Tuohy, Docherty, E.Curnow, Simpson, Gibbs

B
Regularly performed above average, and would have found themselves in the A category if not for some combination of injury and execution at periods through the season

Murphy, Wright, Armfield, Byrne, Plowman, Buckley, Kreuzer

C
Balanced the good with the bad or was ultimately middle-of-the-road for production; senior regulars

Silvagni, Rowe, Lamb, White, KErridge, C.Curnow, Sumner, Thomas

D
Ultimately below average, but in contention for senior selection when form and injury permitted; scope for improvement

Cuningham, Casboult, Gorringe, Boekhorst, McKay, Jones, Phillips, Everitt, Gowers, Graham, Sheehan, Gallucci

E
Decidedly below average, whether through ability to maintain fitness, or their best simply not being good enough for AFL; likelier than most to be delisted

Walker, Jamison, Foster, DVR, JGM, Whiley, Dick, Tutt, Korcheck

F
Genuinely regressed this season, efforts not good enough for long enough at any level

Wood, Jaksch, Smith

Our best 3 (in order):

Patrick Cripps: carried our midfield all year, even looked injured at stages and was still dominant.

Sam Docherty: moved up into the elite echelon of defenders and was probably our most consistent contributor along with Simpson.

Kade Simpson: probably the best season we have seen from this guy and at 32 years of age, shows no sign of slowing up next year.

Biggest disappointments:

Kristian Jacksh: just didn't work hard enough. Had his moments this year and was fairly consistent in the VFL but from limited opportunities in the seniors he failed to make an impact. The clock is ticking.

Nick Graham: I have been a fairly big supporter of this guy but he just hasn't been able to cement a place in the team. Needs to stay in games longer. Still probably has another year.

Blaine Boekhorst: has the tools to be a good player and maybe it was injury that really held him back but he hasn't put it together at any stage of his career.

Biggest surprises:

Lachie Plowman: held a key post for the majority of the season and was very solid. Needs to tidy up his decision making and add a little size but he will be a good player for us.

Sam Rowe: bit of a whipping boy again this year but he protected Weitering and Plowman and did an admirable job at taking the opponents best forward every weeking.

Matthew Wright: our leading goal kicker and all round contributer. Thought Kerridge would be the better of the ex-crows but Wright was super consistent all season.

Best of the draft class:

Jacob Weitering: it's hard not to expect a lot from a number 1 pick, especially one as hyped as he. Didn't disappoint and in a few seasons could easily be in the best 5 key defenders in the game.

Jack Silvangi: absolute class and extremely hard working. Needs a few preseasons to work on strength and aerobic capacity but no doubts from me that he makes it.

Charlie Curnow: I've seen enough, he has the goods.

A lot of our players I think we have a read on, don’t we?

Sumner – I think we all want to see if he can find more of it.

Cuningham interest me. Looks like he is a project for Bolton. Seems to be playing within himself, which is fine. Adhering to firm instructions. For example, seems hell bent on not coughing it up, which is great. Takes the conservative option as a result. That’s fine. He will be more creative in time. We have heaps of time. Let’s get this kid playing the percentages. Learn to not make mistakes. He wasn’t a great kick when drafted, not over distance, and he hasn’t kicked long much in his senior games. That’s fine. That will come in time.

We'll find out a lot about Sumner after he has a full preseason. He seems to always find a bit of the ball early and then fades out, which suggests he's not fit enough (which we all know). He does have class though.

Cunningham looked good on saturday, probably the most confident we've seen him. He goes hard at it, neat skills and speed.

I like him.

Still not convinced it was the right choice on draft night but time will tell!

$2 in the Cuningham jar thanks.

Can't fault most of this. Not sure I would have Buckley in the B grade. Probably just slips out for mine. Conversely, I'd probably have Rowe just sliding into the B category. I would probably also move Jones and Phillips into the C category.

Patrick Cripps - Started off the season in a not so great way, but came storming home particularly in the second half of the season. Stepped up in the absence of Murphy.
Ed Curnow - Arguably has become our most versatile player and hardest worker. Took his game up to a whole new level. He puts it to expereince, but it looks to be much more than that. Ranked fifth in the AFL for tackles at the end of the home and away season.
Sam Docherty - Had a breakout season, becoming our most reliable defender for the future. Also proved to be another potential candidate for the club captaincy. In the top five for marking in the competition.
Bryce Gibbs - Sometimes was only an accumulator but most games did some damage to the opposition. Statistically his best season to date and certainly made up for the disappointment that was 2015.
Kade Simpson - The oldest player on the list hasn't shown any signs of slowing down. This season has proved that he is still an important player moving forward. Still looks as if he has got another couple of seasons left in him. Nothing much else can be said. Pure courage and brilliance.

Sam Kerridge - On the back of work rate and some of the roles he has been given this year, I have to give credit where credit is due. Kerridge had a few stand out games this year, but it looked as if he was showing signs of exhaustion towards the end. The use of the ball would have also been a factor from him getting five stars.
Matthew Kreuzer - Was our main ruckman and got us over the line in one or two matches. At times, he seemed out of form but when we begin to lose all hope, he immediately gets back on his feet with a good performance here and there.
Lachie Plowman - Has looked to become a long-term defender going forward. Has had his fair share of moments on the field he'd wish to forget but for someone with limited preseason time, he satisfactorily got through this year without many more issues.
Sam Rowe - Probably the most controversial decision, but his performances mid-season were outstanding and made every bit of difference with getting us over the line. Leads the competition with one percenters and triggered a one year extension for his efforts. How much longer he lasts remains to be seen.
Zach Tuohy - Began the season quite disappointingly, turning the ball over and giving away free kicks. But like Cripps the second half of 2016 made up for it. From then onward, Tuohy was doing what Tuohy does best. Finding the big sticks from outside 50 and keeping opposition forwards as quiet as possible.
Jacob Weitering - Had an extraordinary first few weeks until injuring his shoulder in the Essendon match. Didn't recapture his form but still had some memorable moments against big name opponents. Pass mark for him.
Matthew Wright - Without a doubt, has been our best inclusion. Finishes on top of the club's goal-kicking tally while pushing up the ground and helping out in the middle on the odd occasion. I'd be giving him another 2 year contract as soon as possible.

Dennis Armfield - The club cult figure excited many a few times this year, kicking three to help get over the line against the cats. Also booted three goals from outside 50 against the crows in the first quarter. At times, he could have probably done more than what he did, but his efforts should see him with another year at the blues. His fate at the club is still unknown.
Dylan Buckley - Probably in the same boat as Armfield (with the only exception being that he is much younger). Provided the odd exciting moment with is run and ability to hit the scoreboard. Has the potential to be a crumbing forward. There was that time however, where we thought he may not see 2017 at Carlton. Hopefully that isn't the case still.
Ciaran Byrne - Bolton has praised him. The supporters had their say and I believe that Byrne is here to stay. He is definitely another defender to persist with for the next few years. Unfortunately, hurting his ACL would be the reason why he didn't get my four stars but he was definitely approaching there.
Levi Casboult - Sometimes was the tall forward he was meant to be and did kick the odd bag of goals a few times. But could he have done any better. That would be most likely the case. I just felt that he did under-perform occasionally. But the good outings remain the good outings.
Charlie Curnow - Take it from me. He is going to be something. Right before the moment he got injured, he knew how to provide a lead and get purchase on the ball. Bringing it down was the only thing he needed to improve on. Another preseason and he should be in the best 22 without a doubt. Hopefully his run with illness and injury is a little more fortunate next year.
Nick Graham - Looked to be an automatic selection for 22 before the season began, however there are still signs of him not being the established player we require. Applies heaps of pressure, but him with ball in hand becomes a concern for many. I'd give him at least another year based on the effort he brought this year, but his fate should be determined when season 2017 is completed.
Marc Murphy - Wasn't performing like he was in late 2015 and did go down with a frustrating syndesmosis injury that saw him struggling to return. But you could tell that the team without him was having trouble with the opponents, especially in the midfield. He was alright to begin with but it was best to ensure that he was fit and firing for a full preseason going into next year.
Andrew Phillips - Probably did not get the respect he deserved. Really helped out Kreuzer and did win us a game. Was out for a fair chunk with a hammy earlier on. His contested work was great and is a fairly good kick for goal. Another great get from the giants.
Jack Silvagni - Played 8 games for 8 losses. Missed out on the win against Melbourne. If that isn't bad luck then I don't know what is. But he has definitely shown why he is a forward for the future. His work under pressure is phenomenal and his work in applying pressure is the same. The team just needs to make sure they give him a Gatorade shower next year.
Liam Sumner - For a player that had to sit aside for most of the preseason, he certainly had impressed me with the overall game he brought to the table in 2016. He is quick and can kick a goal from anywhere. Could have done more, but I suppose that comes with having a preseason under his belt.
Dale Thomas - Coming towards the end of the season was when everybody began to lose large amounts of respect for him. He stood out for only a couple of games earlier in the year, but as of late, his work ethic just did not seem to be visible. Definitely in the could have done better category, but three stars nonetheless.
Simon White - A lot are quite mixed on White. I reckon he is a pass mark this year. Made a huge presence in a few games and isn't going to hurt us going into next season. A serviceable player who can be depended on when needed.

Blaine Boekhorst - Didn't reach the heights we were expecting him to. Probably took him too early in the draft and added more pressure onto him. Did injure himself a couple of times this year. But next season is now or never, as he will be playing for his career.
David Cuningham - Only played three games, but I liked what I saw from him. Can't rate him too highly just yet.Certainly looks to apply a lot of pressure on his opponents. Probably needs to grow and become more of a ball-winner.
Andrejs Everitt - Been a let-down this year. Relies too much on rewarding himself from the hard work of others. Not someone recognised for contested work. Kicks goals but needs to be more tough around the ground.
Daniel Gorringe - Seems like a great all-round player, but I wouldn't trust him as a ruckman. Kicked that karate goal against the kangaroos and looks to do more with us than what he did with the suns. How long he lasts on the list is still unknown.
Liam Jones - Won us the game against the dockers and can do what Everitt doesn't (crash packs). But he can easily go missing and like Casboult, struggles to kick for goal. Not meeting the expectations.
Jed Lamb - I might be a bit harsh but Lamb doesn't seem to try as hard as the others. He can kick goals from any distance, but there is obviously a reason why he was omitted before the other former giants. Needs to work a little harder to cement a spot.
Andrew Walker - One of the modern day greats of our footy club, but this year showed why it was probably best for him to retire. His body just did not seem to hold up and his degenerative knee was always going to play up on him. I congratulate him for his services to Carlton.

Kristian Jaksch - Could be the fact that he did not get as much of a chance to shine or it could be because he was a disappointment. That one opportunity he had and he could not make the most of it. The entire trade for him should be embedded in the darkest and most forgetful moments in our history.
Michael Jamison - As soon as Plowman came into the picture, I for some reason knew that it was the end for Jamo. Another amazing player over the years who just couldn't get his body right to play in the team again. His shoulders were permanently damaged and his fitness was slowly deteriorating. I congratulate him as well for his services at Carlton.
Jason Tutt - Work rate looks okay but his use of the ball is a massive issue. He can easily crumble under pressure and revert to the game style Carlton can't afford to follow (which is kicking and hoping). Only ever good at VFL level.
Mark Whiley - Probably only VFL level, but he was not getting rewarded for his effort and pressure, which was what Bolton wanted his team to be defined by. It just comes to show that Whiley is not in his plans moving forward and looks to be out the door shortly. I feel kind of sorry for him.

The rest I can't judge as I have not seen them play at AFL level this year.

Some of those 4 stars should be 3 but otherwise great review.

Fair point on Buckley, strongly disagree on the rest. Rowe's overall performance this season was bang on average, and should be the bare minimum for players going into the future.

Let's not give plaudits to players for being tall and following someone around for 2 hours.

Buckley is an interesting one.
Has shown lately he can find it, and his pace of course is elite.
But, his kicking is poor and I am not sure about his nous under pressure.
Persevere though for sure as could yet come good.

Buckley doesn't create. He's a finisher and can carry the ball well, but he doesn't make things happen...........and that's O.K. if Bolton can find the right role for him. I just don't know what that role may be.

He's been making plenty happen forward of centre lately, and let's not forget he's been dropping back to support. Proper attacking winger.

He sounds like a run and carry defender...but not sure how that panned out last time we tried it.

I posted this in the Rebuild Tracking thread (really good thread btw you should check it out) but thought i'd post this here as well. It's just the Under 24's, would take another 2 hours to include the senior platers. If anyone wants to take that on, feel free to. But this is a decent look at the kids' years.

Youth Player Review.png

Quick (well it took me a couple of hours) amalgamation of stats and things from this years efforts by the kids. Every player under 24 is listed here, as well as their age (at the end of the 2016 season) how many games they've played in their career (at the end of the 2016 season) as well as what each individual player did in each round, be they playing VFL, AFL or injured. The weekly updated row, is that players SEN Player Ratings points for each game, the three numbers at the start, middle and end of the season for each player are their rough AFL Rankings oint at each respective point of the season.

What you want to be looking at are the averages on the left hand side, the first average is SEN Points Per Games Played, this shows their performance out of 10 on a game by game basis. The second is how many AFL Rankings point each player has jumped per game over their entire career.

The SEN system is a good indicator of actual AFL performance, whilst the AFL Ranking average I have devised is a good indicator of a players potential and talent.
