That great relationship with the players is a double edged sword though. I think one of the reasons the younger coaches of late have struggled (Buckley, hird, voss, sanderson, the scotts, leppitchshsc etc) has been that they are still young enough to be seen as one of the boys, rather than the older mentor/father figure guys like malthouse, sheedy, roos, clarkson et al.

That's true ......however most of those you mentioned, coached their original playing clubs ....that's the in-advisable route to take, for a whole heap of reasons (Hird revered at Essendon?)
