I know I may have said this in another post but what 2016 really highlights is how wrong people like Oakleigh and Graeme Samuel were. Their argument was that the Dogs could not survive financially when this year has proved we can not only survive but thrive and the AFL as a whole is certainly stronger with a visible viable presence in one of Australia's biggest growth areas, the Western suburbs of Melbourne.
It would have been the stupidest decision of all time to ignore the potential of Western Melbourne and I will forgive those blokes the day they admit that they were wrong!

Oakley also said he had no idea how passionate fans were for their clubs. WTF?

They galvanised our supporter base and gave us more of a national identity.
It wasn't there intention but if they hadn't tried to close us would have drifted for years. never been able to chase flags, just trying to avoid the spoon.

Western Bulldogs hit the track in last open training session for the year

ALL Western Bulldogs fans want for Christmas is another premiership.

More than 1500 festive fans gathered to see the players train at Whitten Oval for one last time before Christmas.

Instead of “Sons of the West”, Christmas carols rang over the PA system as players did a light session before a sea of red, white and blue.

Fans are hoping the team can deliver them the gift of another premiership in 2017.

Pat Hodgson, 89, from Seddon, has been coming to training with her daughter Jenny, every week for the last 38 years.

“Oh my lord we couldn’t believe we won this year, still can’t believe it,” Mrs Hodgson said.

She’s watched the Grand Final a couple of times since and has faith her beloved Bulldogs can go back to back.

“It would be beautiful wouldn’t it? I think we can do it,” she said.

Players spent plenty of time with appreciative fans, signing autographs and taking selfies.

Premiership star Matthew Boyd said he noticed a few more people here this year than last.

“I suppose that will happen with all the things we do throughout the year, we’ve got great support,” Boyd said.

He said all the players were looking forward to Christmas and the challenge beyond.

“I feel ready to go again, we’re all pretty excited about reloading for next year. All I want for Christmas is a 2017 premiership,” he laughed.

Boyd’s player sponsor Eden Stafford brought his 2-year-old son Isaac along to see the players and thank them for a great year.

“I had no choice about going for the Bulldogs growing up and neither did he,” Mr Stafford said of his little boy.

“I think this year was about the 3rd time I’ve ever seen my Dad cry in my life.”

“I’m sure I wasn’t the only one,” Eden’s father Martin said.

The family took young Isaac to his first Bulldogs game this year — what will be the first of many.

“We’ve taught him to say, ‘Go Bulldogs’,” Mr Stafford said.

The Bulldogs will now embark on a training camp on the Surf Coast before breaking for Christmas, returning to preseason in early January.

In the mean time, CEO Gary Kent said if fans are looking for a last minute Christmas gift — the Bulldogs shop is the place to go.

“They haven’t stopped in the shop, we’re selling a lot of premiership footballs,” Mr Kent said.

“If you know someone who’s a Bulldogs supporter it’s a really easy thing to buy for Christmas.”

Mr Kent said the entire club was grateful for the overwhelming fan response — and they were looking forward to delivering for them again in 2017.

“We know it’s a tough competition and next year instead of doing the hunting we’re going to be the hunted,” he said.

“But we’re very happy to take on that challenge.”

Western Bulldogs in better shape than premiership year, insists Lachie Hunter

LACHIE Hunter says any premiership hangover concerns were quelled when the Western Bulldogs returned for pre-season in better condition than 12 months ago.

Coach Luke Beveridge has a bunch of stars to slot back into his flag-winning line-up and with Footscray winning the VFL title a healthy selection crush looms in 2017.

Hunter and 2015 All-Australian Jake Stringer cut their holidays short, completing a series of private training sessions in a sign the historic flag celebrations will not hinder next year.

“Me and Jakey were in ‘Fat Club’ last year, so we did a bit of running together and came back all right this year,” Hunter said.

“We based ourselves at Newport athletics track. He’s (Stringer) got a bit of a history of not coming back in the greatest nick.

“Fitness was the main focus and we ramped up kicking towards the end.”

Onballer Luke Dahlhaus joined a few of the 40-minute workouts while Hunter said Lukas Webb had been the standout at Whitten Oval.

Webb was converted into an inside midfielder in 2016, while he and Bailey Dale have noticeably bulked up as they hope to crack the best 22.

Captain Bob Murphy (knee), Stewart Crameri (suspension), Travis Cloke (trade), Marcus Adams (foot), Lin Jong and Matthew Suckling all missed the flag but should be available for Round 1.

Mitch Wallis (leg) and Jack Redpath (knee) are also set to return to full health during the season.

Hunter said Cloke’s impact in match simulation showed he would add another element to the Dogs’ game plan.

“(Cloke’s) a big presence down forward, which we didn’t really have a great deal of last year,” Hunter said.

“It’s just great to have someone to kick to, even though it’s only been match play and things like that.

“There’s that clear bailout kick now if we need it.”

Crameri has been near the front of most of the Dogs’ running trials and could partner Cloke, Stringer and Tom Boyd in a lethal attack.

Webb (15 games) and Dale (14 games) were members of the 2014 draft class which minted three premiership players — Toby McLean, Caleb Daniel and Zaine Cordy.

Hunter, 22 last week, said it was obvious plenty of Bulldogs had cashed in their time off for training.

“I think the nick the boys have come back in is better than last year or the year before,” he said.

“No one can see what you’re doing when the doors are closed and you’re on holidays. So for everyone to come back how they have shows really good signs.

“We’ll have to wait for games to see if anything’s transferred.”

Hunter, one of just four Dogs to play all 26 games this year, admitted it was “kind of impossible” to keep a normal vibe after breaking a 62-year premiership drought.

“There’s clearly a different feeling because we’re going in as the No.1 in many ways,” Hunter said.


“There’s a bit of a different feeling, but you’ve got to take the same attitude in.”

The star wingman said Murphy was doing mostly straight-line drills as fitness staff slowly integrate him back into full training.

The Bulldogs returned to the track about five weeks after the 10 non-finalists and Hunter said that could prove a blessing come September.

“When we get back (from Christmas break) we’ve got another month of solid training,” he said.

“And if anything you’ll be a bit fresher come the end of the year, because you don’t have that four months of training before you start.”

As for his premiership medal?

“Yeah, it’s actually sitting on top of the microwave at the minute,” Hunter said. “I need to get it framed, but it’s on the microwave collecting dust.”

I know that all clubs keep some things under wraps (Adams...), but I don't see the point in someone continually asking "who saw Bont today??" "Can you ask if Bont is alright??" And stuff like that.
