Autopsy Rd 5 Blues go down by 90 points

A few observations from the game.

  • the members area at Adelaide oval is shit.
  • poulson & fisher are tiny. In particular Poulson looked like he couldve played in the mini-league at half time. Happy his first involvement was a tackle though.
  • port adelaide have underachieved the last couple of years. They have a developed squad and shouldve achieved more.
  • Our delivery into the forward line is a freaking joke
  • On that, too many kicks under nil pressure going straight to opponents. Can live with a scrapped kick forward, but geez the amount of kicks under no pressure going straight to opponents is terrible.
  • first option Pickett is what my old coach wouldve said to him. Has some serious wheels though, just needs to take the first option and not try and do too much.
  • Cripps should have a 'not allowed to kick' message. By hand only please.
  • Charlie Curnow covers some serious ground. Full forward one minute, next minute in the back line, then taking a mark on half forward.
  • My worst moment of the game was when Ed Curnow allowed an uncontested mark to a power forward. Seriously when the forward is leading to space, and the kick is to advantage, the defender has no chance. You had to go Ed, and you stopped and watched.
  • My second worst moment was Murphs tackling. Obviously his shoulders are stuffed as he couldnt tackle a chicken.
  • Still doing basic football errors. Marchbank kick out on the full, seriously just pretend to kick and make sure its out first. Forget who it was, but if a faster opponent is running with you onto a loose ball and will go into the forward line with no pressure, then TAKE THE GUY OUT. Give away the free and hold the play up. Dont let them run away, pick up the ball and waltz into the forward line unimpeded.
  • SPS has time. Sad he came out after half time with knee strapping as he was visuably struggling.
  • Same with Weitering, after one contest he got up to chase and could barely get going.
  • Docherty's stuffed kicks come about because he is STUFFED. Runs himself into the ground.

Just a quick thought. If it were a fitness thing and the young guys were running out of legs. Why do we struggle most in the first and third quarters. Not second and fourth...? Something like the first time in 20 odd years Carlton has lost all of its first quarters in the first five games.

Team high 2 contested marks? Hardly worth putting on a highlights sheet. Prob sums up our night if we can't find anything else to put there.
Yep, but great to see Cripps, Doc and Williamson in there with career highs (assuming that's a career high for Willow also).

I've forgotten a fair bit about the game (thankfully) but I think Williamson is just about our best kick

Ed Curnow has been watching midfielders run past him all season. Friday nights game wasn't the first time this year.

Why did Plowman run straight past the dude with the ball? lol
While it looked strange it was the right thing to do. Had Plowman gone to tackle the port player would have hand balled to Plowmans man who could have run to 50 unopposed. As it was Williamson was there to force the kick and Paulson was in hot pursuit.

I always thought Williamson was good but what he is doing for such a young kid is impressive. Calmness and poise are unbelievable

What I don't like about todays football, Plowman runs with his man straight past PP, could of taken the ball out of his hands.
Looked that way, but looking at it closely Powell-Pepper appeared to feign a handpass to his team mate as Plowman was approaching.

Would've be worse if Plow went to PP and the handball got away to his opponent........ split second decision, luckily the Polson express arrived early. :)

I never really understand how all the AFL ratings work, but how does Cripps get something like a 12.5 for the Port game?
He had 37 touches. I know handballs don't score as well as kicks, but he had 14 kicks, 24 effective disposals, 18 contested, 7 score involvements, 3 marks, 5 tackles, 7 clearances, 3 frees for/0 against and only 3 clangers and 121 DT points.

The player who scored just slightly more than him, Aidyn Johnson:
14 disposals, 11 effective, 8 kicks, 5 contested, 5 score involvements, 2 goals, 5 marks, 1 tackle, 0 clearances, no frees for/against, 1 clanger and 67 DT points.

The guy who scored slightly less than him, Charlie Dixon:
5 disposals, 4 effective, 3 kicks, 3 contested, 2 goals, 3 score involvements, 2 marks, 4 tackles, 0 clearances, 0 clangers, no frees for/against and 47 DT points.

It just doesn't make sense.

Ollie Wines deservedly ranked about a 22 (3rd best for the game), with stats of:
35 disposals, 30 effective, 9 kicks, 15 contested, 12 score involvements, 5 marks, 2 tackles, 6 clearances, 4 clangers, 5 inside 50s, 1 free for/2 against and 97 DT points.
Very similar stats with both being ahead in a couple of areas.

One thing I think the rating algorithm over rewards is goals. Aidyn kicked a couple didn't he?

Phillips was terrible. Couldn't mark, kick, handball or tackle. Some taps to advantage. The slighest zephyr of wind blew him out of contests. Jumped too early. Positioning in the ruck and packs just wrong. Robbie Warnock MKII.

You should get a card for mentioning RW's name in full. One of the great errors at Carlton that we made this guy a millionaire. FMD

AFL player ratings favour scoreboard involvement and disposal efficiency, I believe.
Would go some of the way to explaining it. Still seems like a large discrepancy.
In the case of Dixon, that's a massive mark-up. Might have been efficient at 80%, but he only had 5 touches. Cripps had 20 more effective disposals. Would seem massively flawed IMO.
