In all honesty I'm still very salty we didn't take burton and went for doodoo (pun intended). Since the pick of James sellar our drafting has been ridiculously superb. Every draft page that revisits previous drafts has 1-2 crows players in the top 10, which is a feat because we have not had a pick under 10. Really feel we mucked this one right up and could be a pav/McGregor moment all over again

I'm sick to death of the "Pav / McGregor moment" rewriting of history. McGregor was a speculative late pick (pick 75) who turned out to be a really handy player. He was verging on AA selection in 2004, and I think it was Jono Brown who described him as his toughest opponent to that point of his career. Pav wasn't drafted that year by any team, not even as a rookie. This was largely because he was a fat 16 year old (he turned 17 about 6 weeks after the draft). Pav was then picked at overall pick 4 the following season after really coming on in 1999.

By your definition, every single club in the AFL had a "(insert late draft pick here) / Pav moment". The only difference between us and most / all of the other clubs is that we got a 150 gamer out of it.

Oh, and 5 picks later in the 1998 draft, at pick 80, we drafted a mature age Brodie Atkinson. Why it's not referred to our "Atkinson / Pav moment" is anyone's guess. Not to mention Darryl Wintle who we then took in the preseason draft, and all the no-name rookies we and every other club in the league took in the rookie draft.

Kenny's name being linked to this whole thing is just plain weird. This even being a thing is weird. Always was, always will be.

Realistically the worst draft we have ever had was the 2000 draft when we chose Lawrence Angwin then port picked up both Kane Cornes and Shaun Burgoyne both 300 gamers with Burgoyne still playing

I don't really see the point in deriding one of own players when has done literally nothing wrong, other than existing according a select few.

It's not that crazy. The last ten number one picks are McGrath, Weitering, McCartin, Boyd, Whitfield, Patton, Swallow, Scully, Watts, Kreuzer. I'd say Lever is comfortably better than several of those and the equal of most of the others. Who is that much better than Lever to suggest the comparison to a number one pick is ridiculous?

Strange that the guy is coming up to playing his first game soon, the club is pretty keen on him but there are those here who want to denounce him and criticize him like they haven't seen him play before. In the same sentence they want to crown Burton as the number one defender taking on the games gorillas whilst just waiting his time to become the next Fyfe.

He's played 4 games of AFL in 4 seasons. Injuries or not, he hasn't lived up to the hype around him come draft night. After all, the only currency a player has since draft night is if they are playing AFL games.

I have nothing against grabbing him, but **** I wouldn't be interested if it cost anymore than a 3rd as it stands.

Kenny will always be linked because the rules at that time allowed each club to select one 17 year old. We chose Mcgregor Port chose Morgan. We were unable to pick him 5 spots later because we already had our 17 yr old. Its not really weird it was Ken or Pav both wasnt an option.

The fact that NO teams in the league chose Pav as their 17 year old (he was 16 at the time of the draft but whatever), combined with the fact that he was horribly out of shape should really eradicate the whole argument though.

Every team in the league passed on McLeod with a pick too. And Fyfe. And Hird. And Chris Grant. And Laird. I could go on. I just don't get the McGregor vs Pav bullshit. I'd love to see how Kenny's career stacks up with the 15 other 17 year olds selected in the 98 draft. If there were 3 better than him I'd be shocked.

Wonder how Geelong feel about their "Steven Motlop / Rory Sloane moment". It's just irrelevant drivel. You can't often predict that a fat 16 year school kid is going to turn into a superstar. No team in the league knew. That's why nobody drafted him.

I wouldn't have as much of an issue if there was some actual analysis of his performance, but his biggest detractors seem to no nothing about him other than the fact that he's not Burton, and he has a funny looking name.

To be entirely honest as much as I rate Jake Lever (and I used to watch him play prior to getting drafted also) there is no chance that the club would give up Ryan Burton in a straight trade but then the idea that we'll throw in something additional is just not going to happen.

As big of a fan as I am of Lever he is no more than a solid intercept defender (with the potential to become elite) while Burton has the very likely chance of becoming the next Nat Fyfe (this is not because he's wearing our colours, this is something that I was putting forward prior to him being drafted) and we're lucky that nobody else decided to take the chance on this kid.

I do believe that Lever will leave at the end of the season and while he does have ties to the club (one of his closest friends is James Sicily) we won't be entertaining a trade for Burton in the slightest, I think that your best option is to trade him to Collingwood for their 2017 First Round Selection and Matt Scharenberg but then again we've seen stranger things happen.

Good luck with it all because it must be really frustrating to be continually losing your players.

Maybe you could trade for marty36 rather than Lever? You never know, you might want a cheerleader for Burton on your playing list!

Morgan was a complete and utter dud. He took some years to make his debut for Port and when he did he played 3 games for Port over that year and the next before being cut. The Bulldogs picked him up and he played a total of 14 games for them over 3 years. They fkd up bigger than us by a long long way, as did all the other clubs.

All clubs voluntarily overlooked Pavlich that year, not just us. However our selection in Mcgregor was by far the best of the 17 year olds actually taken that year.

Why did we take Mcgregor instead of Pavlich?

Apparently on the recommendation of Mark Mickan, coach of WWT at that time, who rated Kenny higher than Pav as a 17 year old.
