Autopsy Rd 16 Blues lose a harsh one by 8

At 23 then BIGGUS Kerridge is a slow learner. Sorry but he lacks the composure to be an AFL footballer.
Also while we continue to only kick 10 to12 goals a game those unforgivable goal giving turnovers are daggers through the heart.
Big improvement from last year in most games we were kicking between 7 and 10 goals a game and the last few we are snagging around 12 onother 4 or 5 game and we win more than we lose with our defense being almost the best in the comp .

Despite the disappointing result games like this I believe are never wasted. Plenty of lessons to come from it.

My observations:

- Defence looked disorganised at times, perhaps partly due to Marchbank missing. Reckon he's become an important cog down back.

- SOS and Curnow Jnr have surprised me with how well they've done this year. Resting/managing them aside, you'd imagine they're going to play most weeks and pretty key for us to kick a winning score.

- Feel like there are still a few of spots in our best 22 up for grabs. Our midfield still feels like it's light on.

Weiters probably deserved to be pinged for holding the ball deep in the Dee's forward 50 in the last quarter. All swings and roundabouts with the umpiring. Sometimes you get one's you don't deserve, sometimes you miss the one's you should get.

I agree, i just looked at the umpiring panel and besides Sean Ryan the others were very inexperienced so can cut them some slack, the blonde kid Nathan Williamson in particular just didnt look up to it.

Like LBW's in cricket; sometimes you clobbered it into your front leg, others you were absolutely plumb and batted on...

What bothers me with this one is that in changing the decision and reverting to a ball up, Jack misses an opportunity to either go back for a set shot or play on. If the call is a mark, pay the mark. If the call is touched, play on. Don't call it one way, then hold a conference to decide whether it was right or not. The call is what it is, and unless they're going to a video replay the original call should stand.

The issue with this was that 2 umpires had called different decisions, 1 had paid it a mark the other had called touched.. The only reasonable thing to do in this situation is ball it up.

Some posters here quick to dismiss umpiring as a factor in the result, but me give you an example sybmollic of the shite that was served up yesterday (for the second week in a row may I add).

Jack Silvagni takes a terrific one-hander 35m out from goal, city end. Called as a mark from the officiating umpire approximately 5m away. Non-Officiating umpire claims he saw the melbourne defender get a fingertip on the ball 35-40m away from the contest. Officiating umpire rolls over and ballup is awarded. Absolutely ridiculous decision, particularly at a stage of the game when we had momentum.

As I said last week, I don't like to use umpiring as an excuse. However we have a lot of umpires out there at the moment lacking confidence and conviction in their decision making, despite the fact that AFL management always seems keen to blow smoke up their asses after sub-standard performances.
Controlling ump was/is a first year. More senior um overruled him, from 40m away. What a disgrace.

On Kerridge, surely ball handling is something much easier to fix than kicking (also not great but wasn't bad yesterday, looked for the shorter pass more often and kicking more within his limitations).

Have him spend the off season running tailored drills over and over and over. If we invest the effort in him we have the makings of a very good mid.

Kerridge has taken a huge step forward. I am sure BB is ecstatic with how sam played-stepped up when his team needed him. Sure he made some errors which were costly, but to completely denigrate his game because of these is fecked. He will take great confidence from his performance and learn and improve from it

There was a few putrid melbourne fans when leaving the g ... dude you only just bet the team in 16th that had two men down majority of the game, **** off!!

Eh, all clubs have them. I remember being abused relentlessly when I went with my girlfriend and her family (They were all Carlton) to a game in the mid 2000s, I was 15 at the time.

Bad luck yesterday we certainly got out of jail, as I've said on BF before you guys are tracking beautifully, just keep being patient like what TerryWallet is saying.

I think it's less a skill issue and more a composure one.

The really clean and clinical players are able to gather the ball while deciding what they're going to do with it. Peripheral vision, awareness and the ability to assess options quickly are critical. Kerridge lacks most of that. The end result is that he either picks the ball up without knowing what he's going to do, and then gets pressured/tackled before he has a chance to execute, or he tries to read the play while he's gathering/marking the ball, and ends up fumbling because he's not 100% focused on taking possession cleanly.

It'll be difficult for him to improve in any meaningful way in the short term, because it's as much about mental agility as it is physical.

Kerridge is what he is - a limited mid/forward with a huge endurance base. Was a good pick-up in the Menzel deal given where we were at, but is already being relegated to depth status at the moment and will eventually be pushed off the bottom of the list.

Yesterday was the first game all year when I was yelling at the TV. I knew it was going to be a big ask from half time, but I dislike Jordan Lewis that much I was hoping we'd sneak the win and Gibbs would get into his face about it.

Kerridge was huge yesterday - and like everyone I swore at him profusely when he turned the ball over. Having time to settle down and reflect, he was in everything. I hope the past two weeks he is starting to realise his potential, reinvents his disposal, and we'll have a very solid 'depth' player for when required.

Genuinely thought that was the best game I've seen Lamb play - really hope he improves from here. He can play a handy role without being a world beater, and he comes across as a pest (all clubs need one!).

What excites me is that the minutes played by the kids are increasing. Charlie had from memory 10 or less minutes on the bench. His engine is certainly building, and although spent, they all kept at it. This year as a collective will have huge positive impacts for next season.

Geez I'm excited for what we are building!

Good sides do not have players that turn it over so easily under non existent pressure like Kerridge did yesterday. Having players like that as your major ball winners is what makes the difference between good and bad sides.

If Sam Kerridge ever plays another senior game I will be microwaving my non-existent membership.

Can't remember a player single handedly causing a loss like that for some time.
He didn't. He made some costly errors, but we were clear in the last with momentum. I got stuck into him at half time with most of the board, but he ground out a good game.

If anything cost us the game, it was unecessary frees in their forward fifty...two from Sheehan, one from Weitering, one from Jones.

He cost us 2 goals directly and arguably 30 points in total difference (i.e. we likely go forward and goal ourselves). In an 8 point loss HE WAS THE DIFFERENCE.

Wow there are some pathetic Melbourne supporters on their board, practically laughing at Cripps for getting injured.

They are pure garbage ... they sound 15 years old

Strange bunch

yeah he made 2 terrible errors, I'd say his other 30-odd touches more than made up for it. He has deficiencies but get some perspective. He worked his guts out when we were 2 players short. Without his contribution it may have been an 8 goal smashing.

"microwaving my non-existent membership"

Really says it all !!!

Weitering is suffering from the way Bolton was playing him early in the season. He should have been kept as a backman. Didn't work as a fwd and has lost all confidence. Shadow of the player he was last year. He will bounce back but just a dumb idea to try him fwd.
