There was a two on one contest on the wing right infront of me, Eagles were going to get clear. Houston had to tackle and ensure the ball didn't get out, or we were done.

He hit the tackle perfect, ball did not come out and we got a ball up. Was a very important play.

Can someone au fait with juniors and the draft process explain why he went so late?

Nice size, so poised, beautiful disposal.

Was he injured or didn't get an even shake on his U18 team or what?

Played as a lead up forward did he not. At that size was probably regarded as fringe AFL talent. Think he was captain of his TAC cup team, guess he was one of those guys who coaches never experimented too much with.

Because he's a footballer not an athlete.

Probably has an average beep test, average 20 metre sprint, average vertical leap, etc. The fact that he can hit a teammate on the chest 99 times out of 100 doesn't really come into it.

He was a no nonsense HFF, and at his height he was a nothing special dime-a-dozen footballer.

From my previous post in this thread

Oakleigh Chargers’ co-captain in 2015, Houston was overlooked by AFL clubs on Tuesday night, but is a strong chance to be rookie-listed on Friday. Houston is a 187cm lead-up forward with strong hands who booted eight goals against Bendigo Pioneers in one TAC Cup game this season.

Dan Houston “What he’s shown us is that he’s a genuine half forward with elite endurance, he probably could’ve done with more opportunity to play in the midfield but he does present to a club with great lead and mark qualities, elite kicking and endurance. He also has positional versatility. Again, he’s got leadership and great knowledge of the game. I see him as a Ryan O’Keefe type in terms of that half forward role.”

the fan summaries questioned his versatility

Houston is an undersized key forward who is one of the best set shots in the draft. Houston moves well and marks strongly overhead, but he’s not good enough at ground level to play as a medium forward. Houston has struggled to play in other positions, which has hurt his draft stocks

Houston is a strong marking medium forward. He has been hurt and only played the 9 TAC Cup games this season. Consistency from game to game is poor (had an 8 goal game which was fabulous but then 4/9 of his games he didn't provide any scoreboard impact), it also doesn't appear that Houston can play up the field or offer any particular versatility which is something that ideally he develops.

So being really ****ing good is one dimensional?

Ok, got it.

PatientMental put it well - there's not really anything to be righteous about the boring everlasting footballer v athlete thing. Being realistic if you are reviewing prospects for this year a 187cm mid size marking forward with minimal midfield history and no exposure to the national championships is not going to be on top of your list.

It was fairly clear there was a few nice attributes for clubs to take a look in terms of his nous, skills and commitment to bettering himself, but it was not as though he was an obvious selection. Even last couple of years in the SANFL there was just good solid form, but not of the kind to indicate how impressively he has taken to senior level like a duck to water.

Not my assessment. Just reporting back what I remember.

I think the system seems to pigeon holes kids too early though.

Wasn't having a crack at you man.

The draft report posted by PatientMental describes him as an elite kick. Everything we've seen so far confirms this to be the case. He's probably the best kick on our list so that would put him amongst the top few per cent in the league.

Given kicking is the primary skill of the game, why is that seemingly not taken into account at all? Instead players are pigeon holed into positions, athletic profiles and perceived potential. It's like SPP going pick 18 because recruiters thought he had a 'low ceiling'. Sometimes it's obvious who the best players are and you just have to pick them.

lol.....you possibly dont realise how much this is ignored by selectors at all levels. Dipsticks. (Note: not a go at you in any way TeeKray)

Love Houston, in days gone by would be an elite centreman setting play up. With todays bash and crash pressure, pressure, pressure anywhere near the midfield, time to execute skills isnt a luxury mids have anymore. Hoping Dan's growth allows him the opportunity to be more of that f50 deliverer that we so sadly lack. You know, the one with vision, time and silky skills that you can see him display through his junior days and now in patches at the highest level.

Having said all of that, it's a harder thing to pull off than we can appreciate. Guys like Wingard and Polec, 2 of our smarter better skilled players have struggled doing exactly that. And they are some of our smarter players as well.

Hoping Houston will continue his excellent growth rate and ends up the player we see in glimpses, exciting young talent being developed.

Huge kudos to our recruiters then! They have just nailed some of these later "non-name" picks the last few years!

And picking SPP when we did, and knowing just how good he is, and will become!
