I was snooping in the Syd thread and someone said they'd prefer to have 2 rucks up against tbell - it made me think, is he seen as a threat?

then I look at what we have in back up - leunberger, perfectly capable ruckman.

so where do our rock stocks actually sit league wide?

I reckon the problem with our line up is that they are perceived as injury prone - in the end we have 2 good afl quality ruckmen at prime age which is more than a lot can muster - and a solid in game relief option in JD. what we need is the third string guy that isn't smack... and maybe another kid developing, with elite potential - ie our first draft pick hint hint

We could look at Kieran Strachan in the rookie draft he looked more than capable in a few VFL games. In the draft Tom De Koning would be a good Ruck/Key Forward option

Would really like both of them. Draft de koning and rookie strachan (upgrade draper, he seems to be developing at a good enough rate that a pre season could make him ready to pinch hit in the afl).

I would argue that there will be a large difference between the final product of English and Draper. I love Curtains, but he wont ever be able to provide what English already does around the ground with his disposal and possession gathering. Was Cox like in how often he got the footy at junior level and occasionally at VFL level as a 19 year old.

In saying that, i agree that the difference is not always huge between pick 19 in the ND and a bargain in the rookie draft. For every English there is a Fergus Watts, Jason Laycock or Ayce Cordy, so taking a mid or KPP is a more risk averse option in the first round and one i aould prefer. Though i would certainly take that risk with Hayes if the opportunity arose.

My philosophy on rucks is just entice a developing one away from a competitor.

Rucks just aren't worth high picks in my opinion.

Essendon haven't drafted a ruckman in the national draft in a long time, if anything I feel we will take Strachan or De Koning in the rookie draft.

As much as I think Hayes is worth a 1st round pick I feel if an equally good midfielder is available id go the midfielder.

I think you are underselling what Draper can do. He's very mobile and has nice skills and attacks the ball in the air which few ruckman can do.

I think he's going to be another Dodoro special.

I like the way Dodoro has used his picks in the last few drafts.

He has mostly gone with best available in the first round and then in the second round when the mids start to look vanilla he picks somebody like Begley, Laverde, Langford and Merrett with less exposure to midfield but with skillsets that can be adapted easily to the middle of the ground. It's a higher risk option but with far greater upside than just picking a Mathieson.

He has a very good history of picking talls later in the draft.

ever since i've been a kid we were always a ruck strong club - which is what makes what we became so hard to take - resorting to nlm or carslile or smack in the ruck - euugh

I think Dodoro has changed his philosophy over the last four or five years though.

He still has a great eye for spotting talls but it's pretty clear that mids and flankers are where football is at now.

We are just so incredibly fortunate that we have a few elite talls in our lineup.

That also depends on what midfielders are available aswell. Clark, Coffield, Constable, Brayshaw, Higgins and O'Brien are all mids that could be best available there.

The upside with Hayes is he wont take as long as most rucks take to be AFL ready. I feel he will start his career similar to Brodie Grundy and id also predict he will surpass him in talent.
