I don't get this at all. Dude is set up here, we will offer him an appropriate amount and get the job done. We still need to hit salary floor so if we offer him a contract that's more than what he's worth it ain't the end of the world - unless it's a long term contract or not front loaded. Blame the AFL for their stupid min salary idea. I don't even know why we are talking about this, we have higher priorities to worry about.

If we're only going to get pick 19 (which will be pushed into the 20s) as compensation, then the decision to give one of the few guys who has consistently performed over the past decade a sub par offer, also allowing a similarly placed opposition to significantly bolster its midfield, then I really have to question the decision makers at the club. From the outside looking in, it's a farce.

Are there other free agents that will command a compensation pick ahead of our "possible" compo pick for Rocky?

This year is very shallow for academy and F/S kids with Connor Ballenden and Patrick Naish the only possible first rounders, and there is a good chance one or both kids slide in to the second round. Regardless of where either kid is picked, they're not diluting the talent pool if they push a compo pick back in to the 20's. It will still be the same kids available to all clubs.

I think we'll match any offer that only gets us pick 19 as compensation. In terms of what our offer to Rocky is now, I'm more sure now than I have been in recent years that it is a fair offer as opposed to a sub par offer (ok, maybe slightly lowballed just a little bit to test the waters). I'm also of the opinion in the last 7 or so years that a lot of our players (especially our handful of better players) have been overpaid in terms of their true value.

On a related note, if we did receive, and "settle for" an end of first round/beginning of second round compo pick for Rocky what do we do with it? Keep it or trade it?

Do we trade our second round pick 18 for Charlie Cameron and risk "losing" the compo pick on matching a bid for Ballenden. If we trade for Cameron, it makes more sense to try and trade the compo pick for a 2018 pick, or package picks 18 & 19 for an earlier first round pick and later second round pick.

Don't disagree on the overpaid bit, however I'd argue he's consistently performed in a team which hasn't had many consistent performers. Zorko aside, if anyone deserves extra cash, it's him.
That aside, getting rid of one of our very few senior players, especially one of our best performers, only to replace him with MORE kids, sets us up for another long year. Lambs to the slaughter.

Considering Cameron is contracted, it'll take a lot more than pick 18 to get a deal done. We're not going to get anything remotely equal to Rockliff's value to our team balance so it's got me stumped.

Cameron is not worth a first rounder, contracted or not. Can't see us paying that. I'd say we will be trying manufacture a pick in the late 20's if we are still keen. I'm hoping the club passes on him if adealaide are demanding too much.

Had a rough patch of form but has a massive upside, at the start of the year he was being pumped up as the next Andrew McLeod.

No he wasn't. Only a moron would compare him to McLeod.

So sure you are right aren't you mate. Not on this forum. Clearly remember Eddie Betts and Ricciuto taking him up big time and he had a great run of games earlier in the season.

A teammate and a Crows media puppets opinion doesn't mean much.

I don't think anyone thinks he will ever be comparable to McLeod but when he is up and about he has a massive upside. Late 20s would be a great deal for us.

Having an absolute cracker of a game tonight, btw. Just kicked his 3rd.

Late 20s would probably make both teams happy

Why wouldn't you demand a heap for him? He's contracted and just kicked a bag in a preliminary final. You don't just let players who are contracted walk out the door. Demand a very worthwhile trade or he stays. My money is on him staying, but regardless, Rockliff compensation is highly unlikely to get it done which makes the current position on him farcical.

If Rocky leaves we will have to throw the bank at Kennedy from the Giants. We will be extremely slim for ball winners in the midfield if we don't and I fear Beams will break down if he has to carry the load.

Very likely to be going to Victoria I'm afraid.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. We are led to believe it would have to be something around $800k+ to attract band 1 and that our current offer is well below that both in money and years. There is every possibility we won't match offers between where we are at and band 1.

Does seem strange for him to want to move now just after finishing a house and baby...typically that would lead to wanting to stay put and have stability.

Maybe he and his wife would get more support in terms of helping with the baby from Rockliff's family down in Victoria than hers?
I know Benalla is a few hours out of Melbourne, but that's still doable in terms of the parents driving down to help over the weekend for example...or maybe he has family/friends in Melbourne itself.

Does anyone actually know why Rockliff wants to move? (if true)

Cameron is a gun. Late 20's would be daylight robbery. Take that and run, will more likely need to be a pick in the teens though, lets face it.

I reckon a straight swap for pick 18 and be done with it.
If it's overs it isn't by much...you guys have so many kids on your list already and have 3 top 20 picks, likely to be 4 if Rockliff leaves...it's worth trading one for a more mature player like Cameron, rather than having a crazy amount of teenagers.

He wants to show all these soft Gen Y's what 'parenting' really is.
