It will be interesting to see what Lloyd et al think our list weaknesses are. Despite losing Weller I personally don't think we need any more outside mids this draft period. We are almost guaranteed Carter in next year's draft and I can see Duman debuting in 2018 also (both have plenty of speed to offer).

In the second half of the season I thought Blakely was exceptional off half back and I'd lock him into playing there again (but rotating into the middle as required). Having a contested ball winner like him in the back line is a big asset. I'm hoping Neale will be ok to spend more time in the middle next season (I think we suffered a lot by him not being able to spend as much time there this year). I do think we need another in-and-under ball winner but I'm also not sure we need to spend pick #2 or #5 to get one (there are a couple of options later in the draft that I'd back us to turn into gun extractors).

I know some see SHill only on the wing but I really liked what he brought when he was in amongst it. Both he and Walters add plenty of class to the midfield. And crossing fingers we get to see Bennell in the mix at some stage too. Is more balanced midfield class a priority atm? I wouldn't have thought so. And if it were I'd want them to be better kicks than the top prospects this year. We'll also add another balanced mid from our academy in 2019.

I won't be upset if we end up with Cerra, Dow or Brayshaw but I just think some of the other options are more versatile, have higher ceilings, bigger bodies and they fit our needs better. One or two players that can line up and be a presence in the middle to support Fyfe etc, as well as go forward and make a scoreboard impact kills two birds with one stone imo. I could see either UDL or Rayner working seamlessly with Fyfe & Neale. And they suit our desire to have a versatile midfield (eg Fyfe resting forward etc).

Our forward line is still easily our major weakness. It's a shame there isn't a standout KPF in this draft but height isn't the key thing missing from our f50. We need players with more presence, which is why I like Fogarty. If you've watched him play the past few years you will know he has that aura about him - just really strong and demands the ball. At only 1cm or so shorter than Brander, and the versatility to play back or in the midfield, it seems a no brainer to me. I'd still put money on him becoming the best of the draft class - you don't lose your talent when you are injured.

If we end up with two stock standard (albeit very high quality) mids I think we might end up regretting it. Versatile big bodied ball winners trumps balanced mids in our needs stakes imo.

Freo really need a good HF , Blakely,Barlow , Croz all fail to deliver in that curse position . A fit Bennell will help but need another cover . Rayner or Higgins will be my pick .

Now with Suban gone there's all the more chance we go very mid heavy this draft, can almost completely rule out Naughton with pick 5 now.
Was going to say the same thing which has me happy. Absolutely no way we draft Naughton now. Best two mids or fwds/mid full steam ahead

I've been thinking on the GHF ( go home factor ) , you want your draftee's to commit to a contract extension in the first year in a perfect world , what does the club have of value to entice these youngsters to reup ?

AFL games right ?

How about a club mandate with draftees that you don't play AFL games until you sign a 2 year extension , bit of a cutting off your nose scenario I suppose and if they haven't reupped by half way through yr2 then start playing them for trade value

You're picked to make your debut this week bloggsy but it's club policy that we can't play you till you resign I'm afraid

Not sure blackmail is the way to go.

Few really good takes in your post, the only thing I'd say is, the reason you take an elite ball winner early is because they're also elite athletes so we have good coverage in midfield. Often your later pick in-and-under types are great ball winners/game readers but lack the leg speed or endurance and then you have to work other defensive players in to the mid mix to cover for them the other way and we already do that for Fyfe.
tl:dr IMO we need a Barlow with leg speed.

Your policy would not have prevented the Lachie Weller trade. Contracts don't hold players now anyway so there's not much to be gained and it could backfire in our face if we are forced to hold-on to a list clogger mid for 4-5 years who isn't up to it.

Comparing LDU to Rayner, I think i've settled on LDU. The fact he's Vic Country and not Vic Metro does help us from a retention point of view. Plus i feel like Harley Bennell gives us plenty of X factor around half forward already (assuming he stays fit and healthy). Aside from Fyfe (and Mundy who'll retire soon) we don't have another quality big bodied midfielder (not sure if Fogarty will be played Mid for a while)

I think the Vic Country and Vic Metro rule may not work in this case..
LDU comes from Rye on the Mornington Peninsular. Sounds like one of the nicer parts of Victoria, comparable to Moggs Creek. If you come from Shepparton or Mildura you may never want to go back. But a seaside community a ferry ride from Geelong? Not so sure,
Rayner is a Vic Metro player, but there are many places in Melbourne I wouldn’t want to go back to. Not everyone grows up in a vibrant inner city suburb.

How would that be an attraction? Luckily for them though there isn't one.

Edited.

FWIW, I never found Weller to be that deadly accurate even though his kicking action was super sweet. Seemed to take a lot of wrong options or weight the kick to the advantage of the defender too often.

His kicking was rated highly within the club. Maybe that says more about the players who are leading for him?
