We won this draft. WC did well too. None of our 5 picks have to put on much size if any at all. Our list is very strong now. Next year we should go for a big mid. Exciting times
Will pick 18 get us a quality big mid?

Can someone explain why other people are saying we drafted well? It it because all our picks are sliders or something? Don't get it.

Because:

Higgins is elite in his ability to win the ball, pressure, hitting the scoreboard, setting up the play.

CCJ is elite in his contested marking.

Balta has the potential to be one of, if not the best player in the draft.

Naish has a lot of elite AFL traits. Athleticism, kicking etc.

And Miller is a very solid pick late in the draft. Reads the play well, great hands. Finished 1st in the Agility and Goalkicking tests at the Combine and 3rd in the 20m sprint.

All picked later than what they probably should have been.

With 5 youngsters coming in, I wonder if we'd now be one of the youngest teams in the comp.
Draftguru has already updated 2018 lists, although it will change again once the rookie draft is over
https://www.draftguru.com.au/lists/2018/richmond

We are currently the 7th youngest list for 2018, however for the 2017 season we had the 3rd youngest playing 22 of the entire year
It would appear as though some of our older players aren't actually getting a game (Hampson, Lloyd, Griffiths, Miles, etc) which is bringing our average well down

He is a West Coke fan, so that is strange.

Yeah the story wasn't very convincing, his family went to a Norf v West Coast game and his brother went for Norf so he picked West Coast .... if you watch his reaction when he got his name called out he looked gutted, tried to look excited but when he hugged his mum he couldn't even raise a smile ... poor kid, cant blame him he thought he was coming to Richmond LOL

Had a picture of Lids on his wall.

Tigers play cards perfectly to get son of a gun

RICHMOND loved Northern Knights midfielder Patrick Naish and really wanted to bring the son of former rover Chris Naish to the club under the father-son rule.

But they also hoped they wouldn't have to pick him too early during Friday night's NAB AFL Draft.

On that front, it was mission accomplished. The Tigers were able to add excitement machine Jack Higgins with their first selection, No.17 overall and then bring a new ruckman, Callum Coleman-Jones to Punt Road and athletic forward Noah Balta before eventually turning their attention to Naish, who they secured with selection No.34.

The Tigers had to match a bid from St Kilda to get him, but their intelligence was right and they didn't need to draft him so early.

"We really liked him and there was a bit of romance around the father-son," recruiting manager Matthew Clarke said.

"But we didn't really want to alter our draft strategy and getting a tall in was a priority for us."

It was an instant decision to match St Kilda’s bid and to therefore cap off a big night, which started with the selection of Higgins.

"In every grade and every team, he gets the job done. He’s a smart player who gets the footy and he puts a lot of defensive pressure on, which is what our side has done this year and what Damien (coach Damien Hardwick) will demand of him, so we can see him playing pretty early."

The retirement of Ivan Maric dictated the selection of Coleman-Jones.

"He was too good to pass up, but he has also played a lot as a deep forward as an underage player and he was captain of South Australia, which also appealed from a leadership point of view."

The Tigers know they captured lightning in a bottle when they won the flag with their small forward line this year and Coleman-Jones could play alongside Jack Riewoldt next year if circumstances required that the Tigers need a second tall forward.

"He's physically capable and his running is good. He knows how to get the footy, but the rucks and the big forwards also take some time, but the coaches won’t put any restrictions on him," Clarke added.

Tall utility Ben Miller from Kalgoorlie was the Tigers’ final selection, with pick No.63 and if there was a smokey out of the Tigers draft it was him. But they love his versatility and believe they give him something to work with.

Clarke said that Richmond’s surprise premiership win was almost irrelevant to the type of list management decisions they have made.

"As much as we spend time with the coach, we still need to step back and look at where our list is going and also where the game is going."

I was surprised by the Higgins selection and groaned a bit at the luck of it being a small forward that couldn't be passed up.

That said I agree with the opinion made earlier that some of our current forwards might find their way more midfield.

I also think that while our small forwards played a great role this year that Higgins is a class above a few of them and goes a long to addressing the criticism of untalented pressure players.

Makes me excited to think how we might develop on our raw forward pressure style next year with the talents from the likes of Rioli and Bolton yet to be put fully on show and now Higgins who also looks a play maker.

Lastly I wonder in the likes of Higgins sliding that the competition really don't think our game style wants replicating.

Going to be a must see just how that unfolds in 2018.

Higgins the best user in the draft

CCJ the best contested mark.

Balta has the most x factor.

Naish has 'one of ' the best outside games

Miller has the most experience of playing against big bodies having played as a ruckman in senior footy since 15. Finished 1st in the Agility and Goalkicking .

And they're all coming to the side that is indisputably THE BEST .
