Player Watch Mason Cox

What gives me comfort is that Sandilands played his best footy closer to 30 and that huge bugger is still playing at 35.

Cox followed a non traditional pathway so all we can hope for is that he is still tracking upward, which he is, meaning he still has scope for growth as a player.

Sandilands was a specialist first ruck though. We've already got one of them.

I’m beginning to think if Cox fails this year it will not because of Cox. It will either be due to poor delivery or poor forward 50 pressure by the smalls, or both.

Neither of these are in the control of Cox. Let’s hope it all comes together as a team.

No, if he fails it will be because he didntt have enough strings to his bow and no plan B when delivery is poor or the game is highly congested.

For mine a very significant game for Cox and along with Murray probably the most important thing to come out of the weekend.

Statistically it was a game that will make other clubs sit up and worry. 12 disposals, 8 marks, 4 contested marks, 4 goals, 19 hit outs. There is no ruckman or tall forward in the comp who could regularly post this sort of numbers. If Mason can translate those figures to something like an average of 10 disposals, 4 marks, 2 contested marks , 2 goals and 20 hit outs we will have a weapon no one else can match. Even 1.5 goals a game would be fantastic. While he didn't have tough opposition against the Dogs these figures do match very well with what he was doing late in the season last year in the AFL and with his VFL numbers.

More than anything his contested mark numbers in the last 12months have been off the chart good and we will see more of that. He has a natural feel for getting into marking forwardline positions and kicking goals than any other regular ruckman in the comp.

What other teams will be very wary of is stopping his run at a pack. When he does that no one else is in the contest due to his height, speed and leap so it's essentially his mark for the taking. That a few go to ground when he is so clearly advantaged gives some the perception this is a problem . It's not for mine more a realisation of what his advantages are. He is only going to clunk more as he learns and develops.

I think we will see some novel approaches from backman trying to stop his run at the ball this year and subsequently plenty of frees for Maso because there are really not many legal ways to do this.

Great post GC, and I hope you are right about the bolded bit. There’s a first time for everything.:D

Very much agree.I hope the senior players learn his preferred option on how the ball is delivered to him.

No tall forward will perform with poor delivery. Doesn’t matter what strings you have.

Contesting, competitivness at ground level,, pack crashing, tackling, rucking, moving to defence or running hard up the wings, etc etc etc.....good players can and will do these things even if they arent having a great day taking marks and kicking goals. Cox needs to establish that he can do all these things.

Of course Cox will be a better player with better delivery but his career does not and should not depend upon that alone.

50 please Mr Cox.
Would be nice but also epic.

Given we want him to be good for say 400 hit outs in the season if you combine it with 50 goals he will be the most valuable player in the AFL. It's a great dream and something to aim at, similar to the stars.

I think our concern presently is Reid, we kinda know with Cox if he doesn’t mark, opponents can run off. We prob can get away with one of his ilk up forward. However with the second tall being Reid, i can’t see how we can maintain the ball in our fwd half, Goldsack is important for this reason. If McClarty comes on quick, he may force out Reid before we know it.
Sadly I think father time is catching up with Ben. WHEs role is important this year, he just needs to get involved more often.

Good call

Very confident the forward line can work, his markings improved and he's controlling the spill generally to our advantage

Travis could kick 30 40 goals easy crumbing
Sidey same

In fact if used correctly he's a huge weapon

Needs to get more nasty

Gc great you're on board
He and Sam are why we will improve
Our backline now looks attacking and dangerous and therefore will give quicker entries

Cox will be in all aus calculations at some stage , IMO he will lead contested marks, kick 45+ and dominate centre clearances

Watched trav varcoe with him , got a good understanding

I've been on the Cox bandwagon since day 1
