Player Watch #32 - Corey Ellis

As I've said previously, Corey wwill have to dominate every week to just be given a pass mark.

Last night he wasn't on his own in not having a major impact, by my count there were at least half a dozen premiership players that struggled to have their normal impact on the game, but hey they're premiership players so never mind.

Last night wasn't his best game by any stretch, but again he took steps in the right direction. He ranked equal 6th for pressure points behind Graham(101) Cotchin(52) Butler(48) Conca(44) Edwards(43) C.Ellis & Caddy(42). His score was a 30% increase on his 2017 average, he also had a 30% increase in his contested possessions average from 2017. He also had 5 intercepts which was equal 4th most for the team.

Like I said not the greatest game, but steps in the right direction given a criticism has been that he doesn't win his own footy and doesn't get involved enough when not in possession and a bit timid.

As the old saying goes, you need to walk before you can run and Corey is just starting to walk with 24 games under his belt and entering his 4th season. More confidence and he'll be off and running before too long.

What are his qualities with or around the ball? If he's not getting the footy he's definitely not imposing himself on contests.

You don't have to be bowling blokes over and fending off all comers to have an impact around the ball. Ellis is 80 odd kilos and lightly framed but he still puts his head over the ball and he has an ability to make guys miss in a similar way to Pendlebury (before anyone gets excited about me hyping him up I'm not saying he'll be the next Pendlebury) just that he has an ability to get through traffic. As I said it's a slow process and I believe he'll come good if he can get a run at it like guys like Castagna and Butler did last year.

Leg speed (or lack of it) is his other issue,. For someone of his pace you'd want him to be getting it a lot more than he does. Otherwise play a line breaker such as Menadue or Markov who can really do some damage with their dozen or so possessions

I have never thought of Ellis as a link up player. To me he'll play as a combination of Sam Mitchell and Pendlebury. A player who will accumulate possessions and look to bring the outside runners into the game. At the moment that role is played by the likes of Cotchin Prestia Grigg & Graham so Ellis needs to play other roles when in the side.

I think at times people forget that he is still only 21/22 years old and still developing both his game and his body, which is why I've maintained that once he gets a clear run at it and starts to build confidence that he belongs that he'll come good. Ellis is part of the next generation of Richmond players, alongside the likes of Menadue Marakov Higgins Short Bolton Stengle & Naish. These guys are trying to break into a premiership winning midfield. Graham has done so at the moment and is to me the one who has replaced Miles in the midfield, not Ellis as some think.

Guys like those named above will be needed in the next few years as replacements for the likes of Grigg Houli & Edwards who all turn 30 this year come to the end of their careers and Cotchin who is 28 next week and won't be around forever either. So we keep developing these kids and play them when injury/form/suspension dictates. It's up to them when they get their chances to play well enough to maintain their spots when the older guys come back. They do that and it helps us in staying a good side, much like Sydney do with their kids. They bring them through in roles that allow them to develop and gain experience and slowly bring them into the role they want to play. Callum Mills is a perfect example, plays HB most of the year but during the last couple of preseasons he gets midfield time to develop his game. Ellis has played mainly HB or HF in AFL games, but plays midfield at VFL level and also through the JLT. Thursday night he spent more time in the midfield that he has previously and as mentioned played ok, now the key is to build on that if he maintains his spot in the side for this week.

Agree. He should develop all of your above points in the VFL until at AFL standard.

He has been, but when you've got injury forcing change you use the opportunity to give him and others like Short & Bolton game time in the AFL side to continue their development. When the guys like Prestia Houli & Rioli come back it's up to those younger guys to have played well enough to ensure they keep their spots. This is what will help us stay a successful side.

Hope you are right re Pendles and Mitchell combination. But to be truthful just don't think he gets enough of it even at the next level down to give any sort of indication that he could be that sort of player.

It will be interesting over the next couple of weeks if he holds his spot when Houli,Prestia and Broad become available. Competition is far too tight to try and develop players in the 1s. They earn their spot by performing on the big stage or develop in the 2s where we have a very good development program.

He averaged 23 touches and 6 tackles a game in the VFL last year.

Last 6 games in the VFL season he averaged about 22-23 disposals playing off HB predominantly with stints in the middle. Ideally that would be the numbers you'd like to see him average in the AFL especially given our current game plan of just getting the ball forward rather than maintaining possession of previous years. At present in the AFL he doesn't play the rebounding defender role he plays in the VFL so he isn't going to get it 20+ times like some are wanting him to get. Expectations should be 12-18 disposals a game as he plays more of a support role rather than key play maker.

My bad, averaging 23 is not too bad at VFL level.
Still not onboard at next level up however. Hope to be proved wrong though.

HAVE to laugh at Big Footy.
The usual stoic defences of the poster boy plodder - even comparisons to greats of the game like Pendlebury and Sam Mitchell - not to mention a clever manipulation of stats to prove he's better at one part of a game compared with last year.
Swap to another thread and you'll find a bunch of offerings questioning the credentials and ability of Patrick Cripps!!!!!!
Unbelievable!

Pendlebury and Mitchell ... :p:D:p:D:rolleyes:
Comparisons to players of the ilk of Nason, McDonough, Nahas and Arnott is where he's at.
I'd gladly settle for CEllis to have a career on par with Taylor Hunt right now.
The comparison was more to do with the way they play rather than the level they played at. Not surprising that you misunderstood the comparison.

Plays a different role at AFL level compared to the VFL.

I just can't see him making it in the seniors. Houli will replace him next week.
Got a very very strong feeling Shai will be first to get the chop if Houli and/or Prestia come in.............. Edwards will go predominately forward, Dusty to play 50/50 as a forward to make Crows shit their pants with Graham on Sloane... and Conca, Macca, Bash, Ellis twins, Short all sharing the half back/wing/on ball mix.

for the limited amount of game time he had i thought he did reasonably well.

with another pre season under his belt now i would have liked to have seen his impact / performance over the course of around 70% game time instead of something in the 40's.

one thing i think we need to keep in mind is we already have some very very good ball winners in our side, its a pretty decent midfield. so we don't really need him to be getting 25+ touches a game.

we just need him to be damaging when he does get the ball. i think his decision making with the ball is fairly sound. has a lot of good releasing handballs to players in space, but i would like to see him kick it more.

what i like most about him though is how clean he is with picking the ball up. even in the JLT game against norf he had a shocking ball kicked into him deep in the forward line, picked it up clean on the half volley under pressure, dished off the handball and we goaled (i think that was him? lol)

40%, is that a real stat or just something everyone is throwing around because for 40% if true he did pretty good. But i also want to ask why only 40%?

Wanting to ask Goldust & TigerImposter in particular, just what sort of stats they are expecting from Ellis in the AFL side?

Are you 2 expecting him to be getting 20+ disposals and 5+ tackles a week?

If not then why are you so upset that he is getting i.e 12-18 disposals and 3-6 tackles and playing his role in the side which is HF/wing/HB with stints on ball.

If you are expecting him to get 20+ disposals and 5+ tackles each week then I'd suggest that your expectations are unrealistic and need to be wound in a bit.
