Makeshift Crows Reserves team devalues SANFL - how does that help us? that's another shot at us
Because it highlights that the handicap that the SANFL has put on the crows reserves (and hinders our junior development) is an own goal as it may lead to clubs like Adelaide agitating for a AFL reserve comp.

Hence it highlights that the crows reserves should be allowed to compete on a more even basis.

I know a few guys who work (voluntarily) with SANFL clubs. All of them want us out of the comp. From what they hear our club can't get into the VFL or AFL Reserves quick enough.

If we leave both (AFC and SANFL clubs) parties will be happy.

Be careful what you wish for. Take the Maggies and the Crows out and the competition becomes a little sterile.

It helps he mentions how we have drawn our top from community football. followed by
"For those not aware, Adelaide — unlike the traditional SANFL clubs — does not have a reserves or under-age team. It is a “fill-in” team in the State league."

Ends up with mentioning
"A weak Crows SANFL team devalues the State league.
And it brings on the AFL national reserves competition."

To be honest one of his better articles,
Port reserves is not and will never be a traditional SANFL team. They gave that moniker up when they rooted their traditional supporters.

I’m at the point now that I think a mandatory national reserves comp needs to happen and with that any PAFC presence goes with it, they will always complicate things too much. Too weak and Port supporters bleat, too many advantages and it becomes in uneven playing field. Let’s not repeat history here.
I’m concerned with the future of the state leagues but if the self anointed “custodians of the game” have any brains they’ll start recommitting to and restrengthening the state leagues.

I agree,
I just beleive Port and the Crows should have the same rules applied.

Agree The SANFL need to pull the head in and make the comp stronger. I would reduce the Gate price, make it cheaper than the Ammo's

Is there a leaving town tax?

Do they realise what a reserves comp would do to the SANFL?

It would be the same across all the state leagues. Which in my opinion would give the state leagues credibility again. Sure the standard might drop off a bit initially, but with the professionalism in footy continuing to increase, it will soon regain that standard. And the state leagues would no longer need to be compromised by AFL seconds teams playing in them. I've very much been in the camp of an AFL reserves comp for the last few years, and hope it happens sooner than later.

Look i hope it happens but the SANFL will go down the gurgler.

Because the AFL one wont be?

How does all the AFL teams playing reserves matches against each other compromise anything ???
I meant more the AFL compromising the comp in favour of vFL

I don't agree. I think it would allow all the state leagues to thrive again.
How? You've taken 500 odd players out of state league systems, players are still going to play country teams for $

I think the quality may actually improve

I can’t see clubs like us or Port keeping on a Colquhoun or Beech if we have more lpst space. You’d want development players.

So Beech and Colquhoun still play in the SANFL.

Maybe someone like a Jonty Scharenberg gets a go who still may be good enough given an opportunity

A solid senior player not quite good enough to play AFL wouldn’t want to play reserves their whole career. Not every footy player is a loser meat head like Summerton who throws his career away to be Port Powers little bitch.

It depends how the AFL structure a Reserves comp. Do they extend AFL lists, extend rookie lists or have Cat 1 & 2 lists?
Does the AFL put back money and resources into State Leagues as the main pathway for junior programmes, talent development and direct community connections. They’d be mad not to as it’s all set up already with all the traditions already.
If they want to try and reinvent the wheel in traditional markets it’ll do more damage than good and cost a fortune.

So we can safely assume they'll try and reinvent the wheel then....
