Autopsy Rd 14 Battered Blues Brave but down by 20

There was a moment in the game yesterday where Kennedy started a fight with Pendlebury and another C'wood midfielder. He was jumper punching two blokes at the same time, one with each hand. I had this massive grin just watching this bloke stand his ground giving it to them. He absolutely loves a scrap, going to be huge with Cripps the next few years.

In the final edit for game review!!!

The morning after the game....still ******* proud.

Cripps monstered that game. 3 votes. 4 votes for making Taylor Adams shit himself.
Kennedy plenty of room for improvement, but he seems to have really good special awareness in the contest and is able to cut through traffic well for a bloke his size and speed.
Fisher never gonna be a high volume player, but geez he does some spectacular stuff when he gets it.
SPS looks better playing off the ball. I know he was/is a midfielder, but he's so good in space it just makes sense to play him on a HFF.
Dow stepped up, reckon he plays better when the pace of the game is up - seems to lift his intensity to match.
O'Brien showed a harder edge which will put him in really good stead moving forward. Can see why the selectors keep picking him.
Simmo is evergreen. I still think the end will come very quickly when it does arrive...holy cow it would be great to get two more years out of him and get him to 400 and finals.
Charlie finally started holding his marks. Has threatened all year and only had one or two really strong games to date, but this was a great sign. Benefited a lot from a stronger team performance.
Daisy loves a battle. I love that Daisy loves a battle. Sets a great example for the kids.
Rowe impressed me. A lot. 30 secs before the opening bounce gets sent to full forward. Half time gets sent to the ruck. Yeah, he did some Rowe things, but he also lead when he played forward (that's right Levi....it's called LEADING), and stopped Grundy from being his usual influential self in the second half.

Not much I didn't like, to be honest.

Injuries suck, but might work in our favour from a "play the kids" perspective.
O'Shea...look, his prep was probably shot given he literally had to run down to the rooms as the game was being played to get his gear on, but we may have been better off playing one short.
Garlett...please, lay a few tackles. The only other players who matched your 0 tackle return were the two blokes who were off by half time.

Changes:
Krezuer -> Phillips
Casboult/O'Shea -> McKay
Plowman -> Lang
Garlett -> Pickett

Simpson, Rowe, Jones
Thomas, Weitering, Mullett
O'Brien, E. Curnow, Lang
Phillips, Cripps, Kennedy
Fisher, C. Curnow, SPS
Wright, McKay, Pickett
I/C: Dow, Polson, Silvagni, Lamb

Very good summation :thumbsu:

My only comment is that I believe Fisher will be a high volume player. That was his go as a junior. Just knows where to run.

Good feeling waking up Monday morning with some pride in how the weekend panned out - go blue baggers!!
Pretty sure what ever my thoughts are have been echoed throughout this thread.
My expectations of getting pantsed by that mob were stifled - and I'm not complianing!
We were up against it before the first bounce, some carnage through the game, team was flipped on its head almost and yet we still took the filth to task!
Can't ask for much more at this stage of our re-emergence as a force.
We will jag a win over the next few weeks if keep this up.

Don't think it's any coincidence Dow and SPS have their best games for the year when Kennedy is back in the team. Allows them to play more on the outside instead of having their smaller bodies beaten up in the packs.

Make no mistake, having Kennedy become a best 22 staple is a very important piece of the puzzle

Completely agree - having him in and fully fit completely changes the midfield dynamic. The next player like this to come is Pickett - his speed and class changes the team dramatically and makes us much more dangerous.

These two players impact is much bigger than what the stats sheet shows because of the flow on impacts.

Of course the complaints now switch from not being competitive enough to being to defensive from those outside the club but it does give us supporters a nice boost.

Its not picking. These are the facts. 4 disposals in a team that was down 2 players for more than a half. Did not hit the scoreboard. Would love any player I criticise to prove me wrong but every time he comes up to the seniors these are the stats he produces.

2018 - 3 games. 4 disposals, 5 disposals, 7 disposals. Zero goals.
2017 - 1 game. 11 disposals. Zero goals.

4 games. Plenty of time to prove me wrong but...

Imagine if we decided to get rid of simmo because of his first 3 games.
Lets give the boy a chance.

Polson is another sad chapter in our player development hall of shame

Came to the club full of promise, pre-season of 2017 was showing great signs as a rover, first couple of games for NB posted big numbers as a mid (high 20's), got injured and has never been the same ever since

WTF!!

Lol what? Kid is a 2 year player.

Player development isn't some lineal graph that goes straight up. All the players are going to have ups and downs. Some will make it, some won't.

Lets just give the kid a chance though.

If he was in Sydney, geelong or Hawks. They would draft him. Tuck him away in the vfl for 3 years, then wheel them out at AFL level once he was ready.

Due to our situation we have been forced to give AFL exposure to many kids who aren't quite ready for AFL.

They will be all the better for it in a few years.

This is not to say Polson will be a star, or even make it.. he might not...but let's just give them a chance.

Over recent time I have learned to switch off the noise from outside the club. Had a gut full of the 'expert opinions' and more often than not they are proven wrong within days/weeks anyways - which is why I no longer take opinions from washed up footballers that can't get a job outside of the industry but given the air time to spruik their nonsense.

I only watched game on phone

I missed the team selections etc didn’t even know who was lining up

Can someone tell me why McKay wasn’t playing?

Another key point IMO is that during the pre season Bolts worked hard on being more attacking which I believe was right. Unfortunately with all the injuries it made it hard to do and hard to find the balance.

Now he has gone back to the defensive style of last year which is probably right. Needs to do it for the rest of the year and develop the young players.

Next year with hopefully an injury free run and some great additions I hope we will be able to find a better balance.

The Umpires: The free kicks they paid to Collingwood were mostly there, where they let themselves down is ignoring a number of holding the ball decisions against Collingwood. There was probably another 7 or 8 free kicks should have been paid to us. All I ask for each week is that every free kick is paid on its merits. There should be no cherry picking. I will continue to maintain that if there are 60-70 free kicks out there, they must be paid.

This, exactly and undoubtedly. The inconsistency of decisions makes me scream each week. They set the standard with the very first HTB decision of the day then continue to change the rules as the game unfolds. How a Collingwood player is tackled by Rowe, actually uses setting the ball on the ground for balance and then breaking away and NOT being penalised is beyond me. Compare that to Ed being penalised in the last 1/4 for HTB when he clearly does not even have possession.

I'm not saying the umpiring cost us the game, but it sure as hell contributed a substantial part of their 20pt lead. I made a comment to my son during the game that the free's would begin to even up once the game was over.... and sure enough they did

I'm sure the umpiring is not partisan but there does seem to be some psychological bent to subconsciously favour the 'better' team. Lets not forget #freekickhawthorn

Lots of great comments, following a truly great team effort.
The thing that gives me some joy, is thinking forward about our best line up next year.
The team will perform so much better, with the return of Docherty, Murphy, Williamson, Pickett, a stronger McKay, pre-season in all the kids and a couple of new midfield additions. Just not going to happen this year.
I think we will be back in the pack with many more wins.
Keep the faith. Go Blues !!!

I’m sure I noticed Patrick Cripps give Polson a big smile and hug on at least two occasions along with a word of advice,I think this shows us that the Captain is more than happy with the young fellas progress and his game day role.

Second year player who we just extended for another two years, for a sad chapter it's weird that we decided to ask for a sequel...
Not sure if this has been said but
At the end of 3rd where were always going to lose, why not Rowe back and weiters up forward as a plan c?

Football is versatility these days
I wouldn’t of gave a crap if he got 0 possessions and gave 2 free kicks away
We were always going to lose so why not try something?

That’s the type of things that shit me each week.

We can’t go any worse as we have one win for season
So you wanted to play without someone in the ruck?

You're saying the coach not implementing an idea in your mind every week shits you?

Cripps: 29 disp @ 82% (15k, 14hb), 20 contested. 3 goals, 9 score involvements, 7 marks, 7 clearances, 9 tackles, 187 SC points and 26.6 in AFL player ratings. Did most of his work around the wing according to his heat map, with the 3rd quarter being mostly in the middle and forward line.
AFL website is normally right on top of updating the player ratings for the round leaders. Still showing last weeks!

Charlie! What can you say? 3 goals, 19 touches, 10 marks, 6 inside 50s and 2 screamers (I saw 2 big ones, not sure if more, as missed most of the 2nd half).
Best game for Dow and best Carlton game for Kennedy.
Jones was pretty good too. Everyone remembers the one or two mistakes that he makes and clings to them.
Love how on the AFL website listed the Five things about the game and number one was Pendlebury.. No mention at all about Cripps.. predictable. He'll get the 10 coaches votes and still get overlooked for team of the week.

They're on the right path, just stick with the club and it's current process.

It's still going to take a while yet.
