How would mid season trading work?

Any Vic team that is in the top 8 would trade in the best players from the Vic teams at the bottom of the ladder. Possibly current gun for future gun type scenario, with some salary covered by the lower team. Or current gun for picks and middling players. Whoever is in range of a flag would go all in for the flag. Boom or bust style. Rinse and repeat.

Any team outside of Vic would have to pay massive overs by comparison.

Imagine players with kids of schooling age. Good luck to that one. That said, not many would be impacted by that

Also, it was rumoured that Collingwood were into Lynch before that wasnt it? There could still possibly be room for both Lynch and Sloane, especially as Wells contract and Mayne's contract are almost over. But Sloane would have to accept much lower than what we were offering and we wouldn't get our band 1 compo. Hopefully, we would match and force a trade, which would only be possible if Lynch was taken as a FA.
Mayne isn't even half way through his 4 year $0.5m pa deal.

Wells is only half way through his 3 year $0.6m deal.

So the Pies won't fit both Lynch & Sloane without losing other players

The trade will be end of the year. So 2/3 gone and 2/4 gone. Sloane would be 4 years.

Sure but your argument was incorrect.

These 2 are still under contract & need to be paid within the cap.

No, I said Collingwood were into Lynch regardless of whether DeGoey left. I said if De Goey leaves as well, then there could be money there for Sloane as well. He may not get what we were offering him, but there could be enough for him to choose the Pies.

I said was that those players contracts are almost over. 1 year left on Wells' and 2 years on Mayne's. That is $600k extra in the 2nd year and $1.1m in both the 3rd and 4th years. Maybe this was how they planned to pay for Lynch, but now additional money that they set aside for De Goey now becomes available and they can use it for Sloane (if they wanted to).

You need to look up the definition of "almost over" as neither contract is almost over!

As I have been saying all along, your premise is incorrect as neither Mayne nor Wells are in the last year of their contracts to free up cap space.

This is not an opinion, but an undeniable fact, that for some reason you want to argue over, when I pointed out you were wrong.

Give me a break. Its an expression. I bet 2 years in, Nathan Buckley feels like its "almost over" compared to when he first got the news of the deal that got signed. You want waste your time policing people over literal meanings of general sayings, have at it. I could care less (see what I did there).

My point: Sloane could take what Collingwood set aside for De Goey, without affecting their offer for Lynch
Irrelevant: The definition of "almost over"

The crux of your argument was flawed, based on an incorrect premise.

As I pointed out in my original post, the Pies will not be able to afford Lynch & Sloane without losing another player.

It may be that they let De Goey go to chase big money.

You were responding to a conversation where De Goey was going to North Melbourne. That was the original premise.

He was pretty good in the prelim final.
And non-existent in the other 2.

It's an interesting theory though. Most sports have a mid season transfer window

Mayne has actually played some passable footy this year, Wells as usual spending more time with the medicos than on field.

Mate of mine has had to work with judd on promotions before. Self important bell end .
I know someone who saw Judd (back when he was captain at the Eagles) at Tullamarine Airport and he went up to him and politely asked for autograph. Judd looked him up and down, thought about it for a second and then shook his head and uttered "nup" and then turned his back on him.

So I'd believe it

Another trade period for us and the other non destination clubs would be a disaster.

de Goey taking a million dollar offer from North probably frees up some unexpected space for them if he takes it.

I really can’t see De Goey leaving Collingwood. Sure he might get a bit more cash elsewhere, but if he remains at Collingwood, there’s little doubt he’d be well looked after once his career finished. Unless there’s off field issues at Collingwood that haven’t already been brought to light, I just can’t see it happening, I just think he’s trying to eek every cent out of Collingwood.

Hawthorn I think are the sleeping giant this FA period, starting to play some reasonable footy this year with a seasoned successful coach who’s not going to want to go through a genuine rebuild. Probably not too many on their list commanding massive money.

People keep talking about getting the band 1 compo as our only option if Sloane did want to leave. But we could still match an offer and force the trade right?

If so Essendon would be a good team to do that with, right now they have both Orazio and Francis on their list. Neither of which are even close to Sloane in terms of trade value, but the combo might tweak some interest

I suspect Rory's form on return from injury will go a long way to determining his trade value. Personally I'd prefer he stayed. I think the current list has the ability to challenge.

Oh i'm 100% hope he stays bandwagon too. I think we are seeing just how much heat he takes off Matt Crouch this year when he's in there. But just saying if he was to choose Essendon, we could technically force the trade right?

Dodoro, who knows what goes through his mind. Sure trading is absolutely an option.

It would not surprise me if we matched at all, the issue is, whether it’s worth the risk of matching and not being able to make a genuine deal, vs likely a top 10 pick pending where we finish.

With Danger, we were looking at a pick >15 and dealing with one potential suiter and a club likely to be reasonable in negotiations. With Sloane the waters are a little muddier. If we don’t think we’ll get band 1 for him, I suspect we’ll force a trade, but if it’s band 1, I think we’d probably rather bank the pick and move on.

Also depends if we’re bringing in any free agents too.
