News Tom Lynch - RFA, Captaincy Rescinded

You nailed it in one line.
If we were any good (now) he'd be staying. Gold Coast isn't a suburb in Lebanon. All apart from the bedwetter Caddy all signed a 2nd contract.
As for the future, it's never been brighter and I'm a cynical, pessimistic & glass nearly empty guy.
It's a rebuild there's no getting away from that.
But this time we have Swallow, May, Thompson, Wright, Martin, KK, Ainsworth, Miller, AhChee, Florini, Bowes, Hanley etc as the starting pieces.
We have state of the art facilities, not tin sheds. We have Dew not Bluey.
Not going to slag Lynch off myself as his heart would be in staying.
I think this perfectly sums everything up, Lynchy may not necessarily want to go but at some point you've got to listen to what your head is telling you and do what's best for your family and future
I still think Tom’s heart wants to stay, but his head (and his advisors) are telling him to get the hell out of Dodge. Could explain why he looks even more miserable than usual.
It would explain a great deal wouldn't it?
Every concivable sign is pointing for him to abandon ship but his heart just won't let him do it.

I don't envy his position in the slightest, The pressure must be immense for such an introverted bloke to have to deal with.

Do we as a club even get living away from home allowances like the Sydney Swans get? Surely that’s a bonus for players if we could obtain it..
Swans don’t get cola anymore

Absolutely agree Miller shows more leadership in his left little toe.
Hang on he kicks 8 against Carlton every year so he must be a superstar.
If Lynch wants to leave, and we're targeting another Free Agent this year, I wouldn't mind forgoing compensation for Lynch and trading him for Carlton's #1 pick. I'd prefer to keep Lynch, but I could live with that situation.

On the other hand, I remain annoyed at Caddy and JOM and Prestia and Gaz the LW, for effectively forcing themselves out. That is where the real retention problem lies, not with free agents who have earned the right to look around. Most players never get that right, they are not good enough.
Nicely said. Free Agency isn't a 'surprise, bitch!' moment. We all know it's coming well in advance. I'd prefer Lynch stay, because I think he's worth more to us than a draft pick or any player we could conceivably receive in a trade - but our list management isn't doing its due diligence if it hasn't planned for the very real possibility of players leaving via Free Agency.

I hope we don't contract him for a year or two, either. That's horrible list management. He'd effectively be an unrestricted free agent after his contract expires, then. His value would lessen (due to being older) and our negotiating position would be weaker (no alternatives such as compensation available, we don't have the option to match a bid). We're in as powerful a position as we can be right at this moment, and giving it another year or two to wait for better on-field success (under the mistaken idea that'll put us in a stronger position to negotiate with Lynch) would be incredibly naive.

I hope lynch stays but not looking good i think. If hawthorne becomes his destination, would roughead be a good fit for your club in a similar role to hodge for a cpl of years.

I accept other want to get two first round pick for Lynch and making an example , as for myself I still think Combo pick gave GC more flexibility dealing with other club rather than just Lynch destination club .

Eg Sydney might want pick 3 and Blakey and release some of their players to GC through pick Swap, Future pick , rather than just limited to Richmond / Hawthorn / Collingwood players who might not want to come.

If we wanted McVeigh as player/coach as the steak knives in a Lloyd + Alir/Newman + Swans 1st rd pick that provides you with a fair bit of leverage to flush him out from his contract if we can convince him to come for a long-term role.

Someone posted something on here that I still think is the best idea. Having the threat of matching allows you to say "trade us your first round pick for Aaron Hall, and we'll guarantee not to match for Tom Lynch." You get two good first round picks for Hall and Lynch, which is pretty good.

Surprisingly, it looks like there is interest in Hall. He could even fetch 2nd round pick.

This is how I see it playing out but from a Hawks perspective it could be Hawks 2nd round pick and Whitecross for Lonergan and GC's 3rd round pick.

That's fine, but that's not enough benefit for GCS for them to also guarantee to not match for Tom Lynch.

One of those is younger a Qlder and is playing that role of nurturing the kids at the moment (when he isnt in the seniors)

Either you are taking the piss or know nothing about footy - which is it?

Lynch isn't going to Hawks if Tigers are making an offer - your era is over

The bit where WX is given a senior list spot at the Suns - if he wants to play NEAFL as a development coach / top up player that would be OK.

Sorry I am watching NEAFL now , Whitecross is not required as leader in NeAfl. Barlow and Florini just kill Sydney midfield .
