With Heater aging and his eventual replacement post-2019 seeming to be one of Perryman or Cumming, who do you guys think will rise up to the challenge? Perryman seems to be more an inside player with the build and footy smarts of Shaw and the ability to accumulate possessions, but Cumming has the outside foot skills and leg speed of Shaw. Not sure who I prefer more at this stage, both have had a relatively stagnant year, however I feel like Perryman has been playing better than Cumming this year. What are everyone's thoughts on the two?

I wonder if Whitfield will continue playing down back in 2019 or if he'll be moved back to a wing?

Cumming was mentioned by Caruso as someone who has been lined up as a Shaw replacement but he hasn't really come in this year as i expected, especially the 2nd half of the year.

As you said, Perryman is prob more an inside mid than a small defender. I wonder if he'll be patient enough to bide his time for a spot in the best 22 to open up or if he'll get tired of playing in the NEAFL. GWS have had a lot of injuries this year and Perryman has still only managed 6 games this year, which is less than his rookie year.

I think Perryman's big opportunity might actually come if/when you lose a mid or two via trade/FA. My view is that its almost a certainty that you'll lose one of Kelly, Shiel or Coniglio and i think that's when Perryman will get a proper go.

I can see Cumming having more opportunities next year as his body matures but really I think he should be aiming for 2020 to try and work his way into the team
Perryman has had an unfortunate run with injuries this year and I can see him playing a role similar to Reid next year and if you think at the end of 2019 it is likely that there are 3 (+Simpson) retirees more opportunities will open up for the 2/3/4 year players

Great result for the team today and although not v an AFL listed ruck still an impressive game for Briggs and I think the club will definitely draft him I just hope the club can manage a second pick before he is bid on
And Lloyd showing what a good solid AFL player should be able to do at this level

You wont find us focussed on 2019 I think, certainly not me. We've got this year and next year to negotiate. 12 months is a long time in footy, and expectations will no doubt change over that period.

Thanks for the update but gosh our luck really stinks. Literally no reserves will be left by the end of the year if we keep going at this rate. All the best to the whole rehab group though and heres to hoping we can start 2019 with a clean slate on the injury front (minus patton and tiziani).

Agreed, I can see Bunts eventually taking out that extra defensive role when Heater eventually retires. Think his marking, leadership and versatility to cover both mid-tall/small forwards will put him in good stead. We should have enough dare, creativity and ball-carriers in the form of whitfield, kenners and williams to return. Davis, Corr, Taylor, Haynes and Bunts will make up the rest of the backline presumably. The concern would be distributing the age group of our small/mid defenders so would be important for one of Perryman/Cumming to step up regardless. As it stands though, would be hard to see where Perryman and Cumming fit into the future team unless injuries give them opportunities. Luckily, both are academy boys and wont have the go home factor, but would be sad to see both leaving to seek more senior opportunities if they cant crack the team after 3-4 years (in 2020).

As a follow on alternative - can we see Lachie staying (or possibly returning post-Heater retirement) in the backline? Not a bad thought and I think that the Whitfield, Williams and Kennedy setup will be quite good in the post-Heater era. I do feel that Williams and Whitfield are both quite offensive players, often using their run and creativity to work off their direct opponents and into the midfield to set up attacking plays. Heater is quite a balanced player and I think is equally damaging in his defensive and offensive work. In fact, it might make more sense for Kenners to take up Heater's role as a deeper small defender and leave the transition work to Whitfield and Williams who are more damaging on the attack. Buntine as you said might be the reserve versatile defender, he has obvious strengths as a lock down player but but in my opinion he will need to work on improving his kicking (needs more penetration, very loopy at the moment) and building some confidence so he makes better decisions to retain his spot in the senior team. Perryman and Cumming will be the ones to contest for Buntine's current position.

To best utilise Tommo, I reckon we use him as a 70% defender and 30% wingman in the first half of the game. Gives us the opportunity to release Whitfield into the midfield in short 5 minute bursts as required or as a relief for Haynes/Corr if they need a break. By the second half of the game, we move him into a full time wing position along with Scully to really take advantage of their running. Both have massive tanks and will be able to outrun most by the 4th quarter. Tommo's big body and strength will be the point of difference between him and pretty much every other wingman with similar endurance since he can break their tackles and mark up forward (will be quite dominant considering most regulation wingmen are 180-185cm).

That's a great analysis Teeso - perhaps Zac's injury may provide some long-term benefit to the GWS brains trust in considering future options. It will be interesting to see how things pan out over the next few years.

Bad news for Cumming but hopefully he has seen his own development this year and although I would have liked to see him develop faster he will be better with another preseason and hopefully he can add to his games tally
I think Sproule will be ready for a debut early next year as he has been solid throughout the season and has been remarkably durable but I think is in an indication of some of the bruise free footy played in the NEAFL compared to the AFL
Interested in who is the reserves best player for the year as I think Sproule has played most of the games if not all
Stein had his best game from the report and slowly developing and I don't think he will make it in the timeframe the club has given him but I would like him to remain on the list for next year to see if he can lead the backline
Curtain raiser for the derby so interesting to see who comes back in and the comparison in listed numbers between the 2 teams
Hopefully Williams, Flynn, Mohr and both Buckleys can make it back from injury for the game

6 Listed players and Addison and then v 11 for the Swans and I think several of the academy kids have played a few games in the set up but it will still be a big challenge for the team and if they get over the line it would be a monumental achievement
Big match up will be Cameron v the Giants rucks in Briggs, Stein and Sproule and if Briggs can provide a contest it will be a big step for him

Not getting flogged - 47-28 at half time. Kept in it by inaccuracy from the swans.

With regards to Cameron vs. Briggs, cant see the hitout stats but looking at the dreamteam points the hitouts seem to be in the ballpark of 30-9 in darcy cameron's favor. Fair effort from briggs considering hes still young and hasnt had proper conditioning. Would have liked to see how flynn faired against cameron again.

Good stats from williams, sproule and cummings. Williams doing great in his 1st match back, no streaming so cant see him move but looks to still be getting the ball and tackling well. Fingers crossed he still has his dash and he can build up his tank again gradually. Surprisingly 15 possessions for cumming but 12 are handballs. Thought kicking was one of his strengths so would like to see more of that. Hope our afl listed players continue to play strongly.

NB. Tom Green, an academy prospect from next year looking promising. Should be exciting to see how he develops.

Beaten by 56 points but a gallant effort considering the outs.

Looks to have been a successful return by williams leading the way with 30 possessions and also 7 tackles.

The darcy cameron and briggs battle in the ruck clearly went the way of the swans. That being said, briggs is still learning and gave a good contest. Seemingly around 51-32 hitouts in favor of cameron. Briggs also 8 tackles, impressive from the big man. From a stats point of view, would be very happy to pick him up in the draft as an academy player.

Dyl buckley soldiering on with 4 goals and sproule also seemed to have worked hard all day. Cumming 26 disposals with 17 handballs. Serviceable and certainly racking up the ball, but has scope for improvement with so few afl listed players playing.

Peatling needs to continue to improve if we are to draft him and fingers crossed mohr is ok (only a handball for the afternoon). Not sure if any injuries from the match but sure hope not.

Williams looked great for his 1st game back. Buckley was excellent as a forward feeding on scraps.

Briggs as already mentioned although 2nd best to Cameron in the hitout stats, but wasn't disgraced. Tom Green is very promising too, hard at it nut.
