AFL Autopsy Round 22, 2018 - 8 point loss to Richmond

Goddard got stuck into Hurley after Goddard and Francis watched Caddy mark unopposed on the goal line and then goaled. Hurley's look said "what the ****?".

Goddard then fumbled in the 3rd quarter and gave McKenna a talking to as though he was responsible. Then he fumbled again and gave McKenna and McGrath a talking to. McKenna actually pays attention to what he says, or at least pretends that he does. McGrath appeared to act as though "whatever".

Goddard runs hot and cold. He does 3-4 bad things (dropped marks and fumbles, mis directed passes) and then has a patch where he does some nice things. When he was at his peak, he would rarely make a mistake.

Redman looks like Goddard, plays like Goddard and makes less mistakes. 2019 In: Redman.
Part of Richmonds success when asked is described by saying they enjoy their football. I can't imagine Woosha screaming and shouting and pointing ect ect after every mistake yet still he drives standards. I love how much guys like Joe and Jakey look like they are enjoying being out there. Next year I think our backline will also be able to enjoy themselves and probably be much better for it..

Smashing bowls of pretzels doesn't prove you care more. Backing up your mates is what being in a team is all about..

On the bright side, even if we’d won we’d still probably miss the 8 the way results are going.

Had we beaten Richmond and even win on Friday night, we'd still need Gold Coast to beat Geelong in Geelong, which gets even worse when you see how far apart their respective motivation levels are.

We gave ourselves no wiggle room with the losses to Collingwood and Hawthorn.

I know what you're saying but for mine, the wiggle room was never there for us.
The losses to Fremantle, Western Bulldogs & Carlton simply held greater sway. Had we won those we'd be sitting 6th, locked in with a potential battle for 3rd spot.

Amazing when you think about it.

I've no doubt had we made it there'd be teams kacking their dacks having to play us.

It's really not that simple. If we beat Carlton, there is no way we see the change in our game that we saw over the last 13 weeks.

This gets back to whether people view a season in a vacuum or not. This one has been a failure, and the loss to Carlton was horrific, but what has seemingly come out of that time has been a huge positive. So in that regard 2018 hasn't been a write-off at all. 1999 is another one. A massive failure in itself, yet it made the 2000 flag about as close to a one-horse race as you could possibly get a year out from the event.

Agree. Redman is ready to replace Goddard. Happy to give BJ a year to play on and have cover if Redman takes a bit to get going.

At least we now have a bit of an identity other than just the team that runs and guns offensively and hopes for the best.
I am starting to really recognise an Essendon style week after week on the field now. The run from the backline will continue to be a point of difference for us but its not the whole game. In fact our wins from rd 9 onwards were built from a starting base of winning clearances and applying much more pressure throughout the ground. We probably still have some work on our midfield to forward line connection which was hampered by loss of forward personnel but the system there is still a bit rough. Can't go to pieces every time Fantasia is out.

Overall we have a much more sustainable and finals viable style of footy. How we view 2018 is going to depend on 2019 in hindsight. It might be the year that set us up or it might just be a wasted year. I'm pretty optimistic myself. I think we can do some great things in 2019-2021.

The real test will be when we face up to a team like Carlton. We need to play like we are a class above them. Not get harassed by them and not allow them to play above themselves.

Its not so much playing a class above carlton its playing our game plan and not getting sucked in by the opposition ones. Our losses this week and against the hawks were because we got sucked into the opposition game plan.

What we’ve shown last 3 months is that we can now consistently win interstate and put away lower teams. If we played Blues last few weeks we would have won comfortably.
