News Jared Polec signs for Hoppers Crossing

Polec didn't, however his head was turned by an irresponsibly high offer. Even well after he received that offer he was trying to get the club to up their offer so he could stay, but ultimately money (and a girlfriend from Melbourne) was too hard to resist, and nobody blames him or the club for it.
I blame the club for not at least trying with an offer of 4 years. If that extra year could've gotten him to stay, then we are idiots for not even trying.

Fair enough. Although unless C4 is Jared Polec, 'he was never staying' is just his opinion, even if the rest of that post is true. Generally a player who was never staying comes out with the old 'we've put off contract negotiations until the end of the year', whereas from the sounds of things Polec did actually give us an asking price.

Correct. However if you add in the "my manager is overseas for 4 months" in the middle of the season schtick, we can see in hindsight it was him putting contract negotiations off until the end of the year without uttering those words.

I thought I read that if we offered 3 years on 600k last Christmas he would have stayed too, But the club put it off.

Please point out where C4 actually said this?

Because if we had he'd still be on our list next year and we wouldn't be sinking even further into the unskilled grunt mid quagmire that you rightfully complained about a few pages ago.

And if we'd just paid him what he was worth in the first place he'd have been signed up before North ever offered that money. And now we're doing the same thing with Wingard, which was Waspy79's whole point.

The best way to stop your players from entertaining outside offers is to show them that they are valued required players at their current club in the first place and that they wouldn't be better off anywhere else. We were too slow to do that with Polec, and we seem to be actively trying to do the exact opposite of that with Wingard. And now apparently we're doing the same with SPP, who has all the potential to be the midfielder who can burst away from stoppages and offer something offensively but without neglecting the defensive side of his game that you claim were so desperately crying out for, but somehow you seem to be on board with that too.

Go do the search yourself dude. He’s said repeatedly that Polec’s management were always stalling and never actually came to the table to negotiate at any point.

Polec wasn’t worth $600k over three years when he asked for that. That’s what he rated himself as being worth, because he wanted to be paid more than Motlop and he knew at the time the club wouldn’t go for it based on his performance last year.

If the club announced we’d signed Polec to that deal at the start of the year and his performance took a dive (as it always does when he’s comfortable), people would have labeled it another Lobbe deal. And you don’t even know who we are lining up to replace him.

Powell-Pepper isn’t a burst player, by the way. He’s exactly like Wines. Burst players have acceleration from a stoppage to get clean space - they don’t rely on brute force to do it.

On balance, I find it credible that Polec never intended on staying at Port beyond this year, save us matching North's offer and even then probably still leaving.

Polec choosing to negotiate with Port instead of holding off negotiations to the end of the year is more likely an attempt of securing a larger contract by giving the appearance his preference was to stay in SA. North fell for it hook, line and sinker. Imagine how they'll feel once they realise he was always planning on moving to Victoria. Not the best way to start a new relationship.

You do yourself no favours when you make up stuff like this.

Ben Jacobs still hasn't played against us at AO. I've got 6 years worth of boos saved up for that campaigner, I don't think I'll have any left for Polec.
I’m literally gonna booo that shitbird until I get stars in my eyes from extreme blood pressure

If Ben Jacobs ankles turn to chalk like sticks and he never plays footy again you wouldn’t find a more deserving campaigner in the league

It’s fitting this shitbag has essentially admitted he can’t AFL and is now resorting to using his frame to stop other people from AFLing to get a game

Why else would he ask for $600k at the start of the year?

He might be worth that now. He sure as shit wasn’t worth it then.

Why did his manager put that price on him you mean? Any number of reasons. I don't think 600k is high but negotiations always start at the higher end.

And rightly so. What had he done up until then to get that cash?

This year has just been one long power point presentation for him, designed to get him the fattest contract he could. Good luck to him.

I had him as our 2nd best player in 2017 behind Dixon in the votes system.

Cannot believe this conversation is still going n circles

I can't believe it's 2018 and people still haven't cottoned on to the fact that trying to reason with Janus is like repeatedly slamming your head against a brick wall, and expecting the wall to be the one that walks away with a headache.

I don’t get why people believe people on the internet, C4 May have some knowledge but he could also be a nobody wanting everyone to believe he has inside knowledge when he doesn’t

Yes because multiple pieces of information shared by C4 over last couple of years have mostly been correct/eventuated. But hmm nah yeah you may be on to something.

He's not. He's one of a small number of opposition supporters I welcome to our board. Always respectful and very much on the pulse.

It's the old story. Atm player x is worth $450,000 but $600,000 potentially.
In Matt Lobbe's case it was the potential was mis diagnosed.
The key here is for the footy department to identify real potential and sign them before they hit their straps.

The way Polec’s camp has handled this reflects poorly on them for sure, but if you want your staff/players to stay with you then you offer them what they are worth and avoid bartering. We either undervalued him or tried to lowball him, either way we possibly could have signed him then and there.

On the other hand he may still have talked to other clubs to see what he could get before signing, and left anyway.

So overall I think the club made a mistake in offering him less than he was worth, but it’s no guarantee he would have signed then and there. Jared is clearly a bit of a mercenary but I’d still much rather we kept him.

No, the key is for both parties to try to get the best deal for themselves as possible.

I’ll ask again - at the start of the year, knowing we still had to sign up Wines and have Wingard coming out of contract next year, while still trying to target Lycett, how many people would have been happy with Polec getting a $600k a year, 3 year deal?

If we had signed off on that it would have been gross negligence because we could have possibly lost the other three. He became worth $600k for three years when North offered $750k for five to move and we knew what was happening with the others. The fact that his head wasn’t even turned by our last offer says a lot.

You may think events happen in isolation, but they don’t. It’s more important for the girl to be near her family if having kids than anything.

Polec’s management is just trying to present the idea that he isn’t a mercenary. But everyone knows that North ****ing sucks and won’t be winning a flag any time soon, so I’m not sure what else he’s going there for if it’s not for money.
