Shiel is a significantly better footballer than Martin.

Not a huge fan of Jack, mainly due to his inconsistency, but there is no denying his talent. He's a beautiful footballer at his best, very damaging.

Have previously suggested I'd pass on him, but there may be an opportunity there worth exploring.

Plenty will argue against giving up our 2019 first, but if we can do that to get Martin, help secure Setterfield AND get back into the 2nd round of this draft, I'm jumping at that opportunity.
I agree he's a better footballer, but I think Jacks ceiling is significantly higher. Also in my mind he comes across as a player who would see better stats playing in a better team. He isn't really given the best opportunity to show his talent playing in such a poor team. If he went to a better team his performance would significantly improve. If we were to get him in 3 years time he'd be comfortably better than Shiel.

Anyone thinking were going for Kelly and Setterfield for 2018 and 2019 First round picks right now??? What is SOS up to?

Probably 0% chance. But imagine that happening and pulling the rug out from beneath Essendon for Shiel (as GWS would ultimately keep him if that happened).

Would be hilarious.

Oh yes yes

Why are we treating the #1 pick and next year’s first round pick like Monopoly money?

I mean sure, if someone offers us an insane deal then why not, but it has to be so insane that we can land that big fish next year - whomever that fish might be.

Also, I get a strong feeling that no-one wants to deal with SOS over number 1 because they know he’s going to ask for something crazy in return. In reality Gold Coast have all the “cards” here if we’re talking downgrading and upgrading picks.

Went over to the Crowies Board to see how they're going with all this pick swapping stuff.....only to find the Gov thread still at the top of their Board.

"Letting go" is not an Adelaide thing.

Yes, very strange.

For some reason, which I don't understand, the Crows hate us almost as much as Port.

It will be fun once we come good to start beating them on the field, that would tip them over the edge.

Can I pose a question as I haven't seen any of the draft prospects. Is Walsh a man child, that has used all his potential. In other words is their room for improvement? I saw a pic of him and he looked fully developed, hence against underdeveloped kids he would dominate.

Just posing a question, forgive me if I'm off the mark.

Do you mean Smith?

I see Smith as an already-solid midfielder. Walsh is a lightly-built runner. Would be close to 10kg between them.

So to answer your question, Walsh is far from a man-child that will lose some out-performance once playing against men.

Some people are making a lot of assumptions in this thread; the assumptions being that our only interest in having any presence in the first round of this draft is to add a sure fire mid to our list and optimally it really only needs to be one with any others being bonuses; that we can just virtually nominate what kind of mid range first rounder will land us Smith if we don't get Walsh with pick one and that the only way to improve next year to make us a more viable destination is to slightly overpay for at least one, preferably two, midfielders from other clubs, in addition to Setterfield.

The club only stated that it wanted to add senior experience from the age of 24-27 and did not specify them being midfielders or how we'd acquire them. Perhaps this is just about it and the rest will be mopping up, perhaps we take a tall with our first pick and/or get lucky and nab another pick for a midfielder who isn't Walsh or Smith.

I don't get the fascination with trading this years first and next years first (likely to be top 4) for picks 2 & 3 this year. The Port and Freo trade shows that teams will pay a premium to move up the draft board. If Gold Coast want pick 1 make them pay for it.
If it's both 1st rounders they need to add a pick around 12 or it's this years 1st and next years 2nd. The trade has to be in our favour. Not a fair trade for both teams

What about if GCFC included Martin or Brodie in their handover ? If they get #5 in the trade for May, can go for Walsh & Smith for their midfield and VIC boys in tandem, or 1 of the Kings for KP (think STK take Max if they have #4).
Then #2 & 3 (Luko & Rankine) to PTA for 6, 7 (Wingard), 10 + their next years 2nd rounder (or even their 1st if they're desperate enough) - we do as needed with these, draft or jump in with another big name, or 2 if anyone can be tempted to move?
= 4,751pts for 4,790pts + next years 2nd value, though not points based for academy/FS but subjective worth to our drafting strategy

Give up next years 2nd for Setters.

IN: Brodie/Martin, Setterfield, McGovern + Fasolo plus whatever 6, 7, 10 could bring + 2019 PTA 2nd rounder, ADL 3rd
OUT: Picks 2018 #1, 26, 28 + 2019 1st & 2nd rounders (PTA's in).
