But when played primarily there the usual suspects lose their shit.
Gresh and Billings will play between those spots. But will hopefully be given more time in the mid with periods of rest in the forward line.

Why you gotta throw shade? Just have a conversation ffs.

Billings I hope plays wing-defence. Gresh I’m not sold on as a mid at all yet. Lacks the fitness. Long, see Gresh.

How would any of us know that?
Well by observing the players from u 18s to how they have played at St Kilda how they have been develop. Listening to what the players have said. I have been saying it for years now.

These are the key issues that I think stifle the development of our younger players.

Played in the wrong positions
this to me is the biggest issue of all and why it has taken some guys so long to adapt the AFL level. A player such as Jack Lonie, Ben Patton, Blake Acres, Jack Sinclair going back last year Minch and Mav too who had dominated in the VFL in the midfield would continuously be named in the senior team in a pocket this is especially true to Jack Lonie. Lonie would constantly try his all but of course not be able to ifnd consistancy as he was being played in a different poisiotn to the one in the VFL. This would continue for a few games before he would undoubtedly be dropped. Now I'm not asking Lonie to be played the whole game in the midfield, not even a quarter but some time pls. This issue is exagertated in games where we have dominated/been dominated. Whats to lose nothing. I don't know how you can expect a young player to succeed if they cannot get consistency in a position. The other problem is it takes far longer for the players to develop because they are always been throwing back anf fourth between VFL and AFL meaning it takes longer to adapt to AFL.

Knocking the flair out of the player
I think this is an issue of Richo not being able to adapt his methods to different players. Both Dunstan and Lonie said that they stopped playing on instinct due to structures, having to be defensively minded etc etc. Now I;m not saying don;t have structures but you need to allow young players to play with confidence and take the game on. Guys like Coff, Dmac, White, I feel are being made to be so defensively minded that it takes away form their natural game. Now of course balance is key but you;ve got to allow for some mistakes especially from young players.

Not having trust in the younger players in crucial games/crucial moments
This one I ca understand a little especially with the coach under so much pressure but I don't know how we can expect to see our young players really take the next step if they are not trusted by the coach to deliver. Time and time again Richo has looked to players like Steven, Ross, Dunstan and Arimtage over the likes of Acres, Gresh , Sincs, Clark at times where opposition teams have gotten on top of us whilst playing against the guys in the midfield that I mentioned first. Now we can only compare to what other teams do. In the game between Geelong and North last year I think where the game came down to the last centre bounce I couldn;t belive my eyes when I saw Quinton Narkle in his first game be in the square for the last clearance. Furthermore in one of Hawthorns games they Had Morrision and Cousins in the midfield at the same time. For Richo to do this it has been far and few between in his tenure so far.

Lack of selections integrity

Time and time again guys who have played well in the seniors get dropped especially young players such as Acres, White so other guys who have played worse such as Newnes, Weller, Arimtage have been selected. Or have been played in alternate positions to suit older guys who have been playing at a low level. this lowers a young players confidence especially earl on in their development.

Wasnt meant to be shade. Apologies if it did. Think the negativity of this place before the first bounce has gotten to me!
I think Gresh and Long will be able to interchange between forward and mid and give that x factor that we have been crying out for. Billings must this year step up and play consistent midfield/wing time.

Clark vs Dunstan...

Looks like Luke won the duel, to be fair he played better in the JLT..

Hopefully Hunter and Coff get 100mins on ball for Sandy
I think that’s what it’s down to.

Clark unquestionably more talented, but right now Dunstan is more consistent over the four quarters.

One of Our picks 7 & 8 should be locks for the best 22

To have both unable to get selected in a bottom 4 team is very concerning.

Are we burning more top 10 picks?
Agree.

It’s certainly not a thought any of us would even have considered when we were all hailing Ameet’s genius at getting that pick out of the Hawks.

That neither can even make this injury hit team is, as you say, very concerning, no matter how you spin it.

Ahh, fresh blood into the team.
Hungry for an opportunity.
Go lads, Go!

Hang on wait, we're going to run Long through midfield who only played one JLT match for 11 touches, 2 tackles and 1 clearance over Clark who had 2 games of 15 touches , 5-6 tackles and 4 clearances?

Hunter had better numbers than Gresham in the praccy matches, just sayn'.

We have one mid on the bench… stuv.

Very concerning indeed. No Clark, No Coffield, No Acres and no McCartin or King (all be it due to injury). Not to mention Dunston is just scrapping in and Billings is almost there due to there being no one else. These blokes should be the centerpiece of our team.

Good to see nothing is changing. Not picking the you talented kids because they are 'not ready' and going with to many defensive players. My god I cannot stand Richardson.

I guess our development is just going to magically happen... keep holding the kids back. Hunter oozes talent how on earth isn't he in this side.

I have to give a shoutout to gromma, looks like he was right a round 1 debut at the hawks after a good preseason is a great result.

Our attention just for a change must have been elsewhere.

sinclair and dunstan taking up some pretty prized midfield spots, pressure's on to perform. If they don't and Hunter gets left out round 2 this place will melt

Dunny plays though. Thank God for that. Gotta love those handballs at the feet and kicks to the opposition.
At least he's only fit enough to play 1/2 a game I suppose.

Not to many have come on under his tutelage.

Is doing nothing but holding the club back will go nowhere with him

The team is very ‘safe’. Richo is feeling the pressure & gone with what he knows - he’s so bloody stubborn it’s sickening. Defensive minded players prioritised over those that can create - why am I not surprised?

The new players are mature recruits, no 1st (understandable yet typical) or 2nd year players to be seen.

Richo & the match committee have unwittingly selected an unbalanced 22 because they had the blinkers on when selecting those attributes (defence) they value the most whilst neglecting what we need to be successful against half decent teams.

Too many small forwards. Not enough height at either end. Flankers everywhere.

Pierce over Marshall because they are hoping to negate Witts’ effect in the ruck instead of exploiting him around the ground, which I believe Marshall would’ve done.

McKenzie still has credits from last years GC game - yet he is underdone much like GOAT.

Luckily, I believe we’ll win regardless of selections. But I’m concerned by what happens on subsequent matches when the match committee feel vindicated selecting a dour, defensive, non-creative team that has too many specialist smalls & flankers & not enough generalist mids & talls.

Been like that for 3 years why would anything change

Agreed. I'm mad as hell atm. Been so looking forward to round 1 and now we don't get to see our young talent against very poor opposition... It just makes zero sense not selecting Clark and Marshall. At least if we lose Sunday the media will be gunning for Richo. May be a blessing in disguise... so sick of this crap.

Exactly. You get it... and not sugar coating it like some posters. Things just aren't going to change for the good with these types of selections.
