That was a great performance bar the goal leakage late in quarters. Sadly a bit of a Collingwood trait that we need to rectify. Besides from that we comprehensively demolished them around the entire ground. Ball movement looked fantastic. It's great to actually have a real backline for this year. Let's hope they stay fit because for the first time in a long while I wasn't nervous when we were kicking out of defence.

I've been saying this for years, it's not about the free kick count in isolation. It never tells the full story. Keep in mind, when you posess the ball as much as we did, what free kicks were Richmond expecting to get?

The funny thing is, Richmond STILL got absolutely crucial decisions go their way that kept them in the game:

1) Deplorable free against Mason for what people still don't know for, preventing a goal to Elliott
2) Soft free against Langdon on Lynch for the EXACT same thing Reiwoldt did to Mason only minutes earlier with no penalty, gifting them a goal
3) Giving Edwards the kick for literally no reason when it was Macintosh who tackled Sidebottom. Macinstosh 100% would have missed that
4) Edwards kicking the ball off the ground which should have been in danger to Pendles, Lynch marks and goal

There is literally 3 goals Richmond got that they should never have had and 1 taken away from us that were a direct result of poor umpiring

44 points becomes 68 just like that.

The free kick count alone doesn't tell the full story. The only howler the other way that really stood out was Sidebottoms SUPER obvious scoop/throw that was let go for whatever reason right in front of goal. So I guess that cancels out one of the others.

edit:

The Age sadi the same thing lol

Richmond was thoroughly beaten for all but the last three minutes of the first half. Then they kicked three goals in three minutes. The third goal of those goals was just weird.
Steele Sidebottom had the ball in Collingwood’s back pocket, turned and the ball was knocked out of his hands. Kamdyn McIntosh then had him by the shorts.

A free was paid for holding the ball which seemed odd for the ball was knocked out without a tackle, but not as odd as Shane Edwards being given the kick. (Collingwood was in no position to argue about free kicks on the night, Sidebottom got away with a throw in the back pocket a quarter later.)

We played well, tigs badly and lacking their usual pressure. Next week will tell us more, but I wonder how much it had to do with denying them the footy. The way we played keepings off and moved the footy reminds a bit of the successful tactic the eagles and a couple of teams have until utilised against us.

Thought our backline made a concerted effort to keep at least one down instead off all flying for the footy especially in the first half.

Fantastic win, looked like the side we expected to see, but l still think we can go up another cog or two, with Adams, WHE and Wells that can come into this side.
Our midfield dominated, backline looked good. I really like the Roughy pickup, and Moore is leading that backline, in the air and at ground level. Hopefully he can stay injury free. Really hoping DeGoey and Elliott stay together up forward. If they are together majority of the year, it could easily be a 80-85 goal season between them.

How many free kicks can you expect to get when you don’t have the ball AND don’t lay any tackles?

I mean the umps were inventing frees just to make sure Richmond got some.

But But But we didn't have Rance, and the free kicks.. what about the free kicks..

Never mind the 167 disposal differential, or the 20 extra inside 50's, or the 100 extra marks, or that tackles were 60-33 in our favour, or that they had 16 players with 1 tackle or less.

Those pesky umpires.

The margin flattered them, should have been 60-70 points.

How can a team have 167 less disposals and still loose the tackle count 60-33. Just shows how badly they were destroyed last night.

I know how you all eagerly await my analysis on the game and that re.. but don't really wanna exhaust myself today as I have 3 tinder dates tonight re.. and I've gotta make sure the alpine system and subwoofers are in mint condition.. clothes combos and that re take a bit of time sort of a thing.. will send odd bod posts here and there throughout the day just to keep the faithful happy.

You guys are greats re.

- Roughead is the only concern amongst a defensive group that is red hot early season. He was comprehensively beaten on the lead a number of times by a 60% match fit Lynch. Fortunately the number of teams with two legitimately good KPF’s is limited throughout the league. Problem is it’s generally the better ones. Needs to lift with Goldsack waiting in the wings.
.
I thought Roughead was good. The soccer kick out of the square was incredibly difficult to stop and another was the result of a skeptical free against Langdon. I cant remember about the 3rd goal.

Plus Roughie had 20 disposals and 13 marks, so got involved the other way.

Roughead Beams Moore Elliott Treloar and Pendlebury are pretty good recruits for any team . Makes a difference to have a fully fit list

And we still have Sier Adams and Hoskin—Elliot from our GF team to squeeze in not to mention some other VFL youth

Just watched the game again and I have to admit that when I was watching it live I didn't realise how well Mihocek played.
Jeez he was good.

Post-game he spoke about how he knew he was gonna get the undersized defender, so he really wanted to impact contests.

He did very well. I love it when players identify that they possibly have an advantage and utilise it to the best of their ability.

Wow six Richmond players zero tackles with another ten - 1 tackle each.
Hard to tackle when you are free from your man and pass better to open them up.

Nice isn’t it?

4) Edwards kicking the ball off the ground which should have been in danger to Pendles, Lynch marks and goal
If the ball is in mid-air technically a player has the right to take a swing at it, if the ball is on the ground that's another story. Even still, cheap goal.

How good is it seeing the players we got from the Beams trade, DeGoey, Greenwood and Crisp all playing good footy and..... Beams as well! Fun times.
Beams really clicked into pure class last night.

Watched him also through binoculars and he discusses with players set ups say at the centre square. Really good his leadership. He’s come a long way, even more complete player I reckon.

Sidebottoms SUPER obvious scoop/throw
And that one I'll have to take a look at again but I'm certain it was knocked out my the tackler. When an opposing player dislodges the ball from the opposition, that means that opponent has effectively 'disposed' of it for you. Looking back to that Sidebottom 'holding the ball' just before HT, Sidebottom didn't have a chance to dispose of it because it was just slapped out, probably the most pathetic interpretation of a fundamental law of the game. Also a bit knit picky, but how could it have even been holding the ball without any tackle?

Roughead was ok. He allowed Moore to play his role. Lynch is a very good player. Take out the cheap free and he kicked 2 inc a hack kick off the ground which he read better.

Just this innate ability to read the thoughts of a player based on his body language re.. then it expands out to the midfield group.. then the team as a whole etc etc. Simple as that re. Like walking into a nightclub looking at peoples faces.. dress sense.. waft of b.o lynx designer fragrances.. the way they converse and shit like that re.. then either sticking around or going bar hopping until you find a club to your liking and that re.

Huh?

You're mixing up frees.

The Sidebottom "holding the ball" before half time wasn't holding the ball, the ball was knocked out. I agree with you there. This was right before three quarter time. Sidebottom full blown threw the ball and got away with it in Richmond's goal square RIGHT before the three quarter time siren.

Official crowd: 70,699 at the MCG

Wow I overestimated the crowd being at 75k before the game. I'm all for Thursday games, I love em, but this fixturing was a head-scratcher.

The soccer kick I50 was about poor positioning. Roughead didn’t take the right shoulder forcing Lynch boundary side. Defensive fundamentals. He lost body contact at ground level for Lynch’s point from 15 out directly in front 5 minutes into the match and there was also one Lynch dished off to Higgins after he lost Roughead in transition. He was definitely stiff with the free kick. A fully fit Lynch is a different story again.

I have concerns over his ability to curtail Kennedy or Darling and Goldsack to Darling with Moore to Kennedy feels a better fit, IMO, due to the added mobility. It won’t happen and I’m not really calling for it, but he’s conceded 6 goals in two weeks and both his opponents had opportunities to kick 5-6. That’s shaky.

FWIW his numbers mean nothing to me because his role is to nullify a KPF and 90% were as a link man on the switch which you or I could do.

Keepings off played a part. We had a league record 99 marks at half time and while we missed the most marks ever in a game we still chalked up the most marks against the tigs, beating that by 20 odd.

The question is can we replicate that when faced with more pressure?

Oh yeah I think I know the one you're talking about now. There's two ways you could really explain that; either the umpire just didn't have the angle to see that or if you see here the opponent makes contact with the ball. Whether or not that's enough force to actually dislodge that ball is up for debate but I'd have to say it was a throw.
