Yeh time 4 a long hard look at yourself, Chicago.
There are just so many choices to get the right combination for a win. I did see that a Polish restaurant is on Uber Eats. I could always order Śledź w oleju z cebulą or Łazanki z kapustą i grzybami.

Name five blokes who can hold their heads high after that mess?
I can think of three, Daniel, Smith and Libba. That’s it.

Thought Suckling was good deserves a mention. Saved us several times and kicked a long goal.

Polish, Italian, Mexican, Thai whatever just eat something that will make us kick straight. Not asking too much. That Polish dish does sound tasty though.

Terrible game to watch on the screen. We clearly dropped 10% or more in intensity from last week. You can call that complacency or believing your own press (and maybe it was) but it might be as simple as a still very young team not being seasoned enough to get themselves up mentally three weeks in a row. At the end of the game we might have been just one awkward bounce away from pulling off an unlikely and undeserved win.

I also think not enough has been said in Gold Coast's credit. They were up for the game, their intensity was great and they have some pretty handy players. They outmarked us (CMs), outran us, out-harrassed us, played far more disciplined footy and were generally more switched on. I don't think they are a flag threat but they are no wooden spooners either. Maybe an outside chance for the finals.

Now I know a lot is said on BF about certain coaches (usually Bevo) being "outcoached" but the reality is that it's never that black and white. There are pre-game plans, rotation plans, opposition analysis, player matchups and counter-strategies to neutralise opposition strengths. There is the mental preparation of players as well as longer term aspects like player development. Then after all that there are also match day tactics where both coaches pull a few levers to try to improve things. Coaches will often do well in some areas but be outfoxed or outflanked in others. None of that suits the bold and simplistic "outcoached" declarations that you see so often on BF.

But I will say this. Stuart Dew set his side up well to neutralise our strengths. I wasn't at the ground and it's hard to tell from the TV coverage but I've read a couple of times that they played more man-on-man than one usually sees in the modern game. They also harrassed us with swarming defence all over the ground. I think these tactics may have thrown us a bit. We certainly weren't as clean with the loose ball and fast ball movement as we've been in recent weeks. If you combine that with a touch of laxity ("complacency" perhaps) we suddenly found ourselves on the back foot and became rattled against a side that was building in confidence all the time as their tactics started to pay dividends. To the extent that his tactics worked I'd say he deserves a pat on the back. But that doesn't automatically mean Bevo was crap or was comprehensively outcoached as some here would have it. We might find out a bit more about Bevo's abilities as soon as next Friday.

I hate losing by any margin, but especially when we had a chance to get a result in the last few minutes and failed. However I say good luck to Gold Coast. I'm happy it was them and wish them well. It would have been so much harder to take if that had been Norf or Essendon or Carlton or GWS.

You are the third to receive a warning about attacking other posters. No more warnings.
It was a horrible loss and some people are venting. I really don’t think there has been anything malicious here.
I fear what the pies will go to us off a 5 day break

As everyone knows I predicted a really bad year but after the first two wins today was a must to set the year up.

We will now go 2-2 with a negative percentage.

At the game today we continually ignored short options and bombed it along the line when they dropped players. You wouldn’t have been able to see it on TV but they had a plus 2 ratio nearly every time across half back which means we had to have free short options but didn’t use them.

Our disposal was rubbish not even close to AFL level
We had free men...but they didn’t present themselves as options. So little running off the ball. I can barely recall a chain of handballs or a penetrating down the middle. We were utterly lifeless.

Suckling and Crozier for me also, but that's all I would add to your list.

This loss is just really grinding my gears tonight. Think it’s more the fact that we have the pies in 5 days and being 3-0 would have been great as it’s going to be a really tough game to win. Blew a great chance to be 3-0.

Interesting post match press conference from Bevo.

Very unhappy with our high forwards not putting defensive pressure on, especially early. Not happy that we didn't take our chances in front of goal. Likely to persist with English, I'd guess JJ comes back this week straight into the seniors.

Tom Boyd to play VFL this week too.

lets be honest, the majority of those backline players are a mess. i have no trust in young, wood or cordy. defense is the most important part of a team.

The backline has struggled in the absence of both Boyd (retirement) and Morris (injury)

It's not the result, even if he kicked the goal we would still have needed another score. That's exactly why he needed to at least show some urgency or even jog back on the mark, like you see every other player do in that same situation. I can't remember any player take the whole 30 seconds in a similar situation.

There was ZERO urgency after he took the mark. Compare that to Naughton the goal before that. Even after getting hammered he quickly got up and jogged back to take his shot.

I'm not talking about his set shot process, I'm talking about his gentle stroll right after taking the mark, and the lack of any urgency measuring his steps. No way he should have used up all 30 seconds there.
Naughton was only 15 m out though. Gowers was kicking from 45 and jogging back may have saved a couple of seconds but he would not have known how much time was left. He may have been worried about rushing and missing the goal and the siren going straight away after he kicked it. I had the feeling he would miss though, but on the positive side, it was a fair grab in a pressure situation.

Disappointing effort though we could easily have pinched it. I would say our two wins show what we are capable of so doesn’t make sense to say this is our true level or we are crap etc as the d head behind me in aisle 26 kept saying

Lol, come on

Pigs would start flying before Bevo would start playing those types

Campbell and Minson ring a bell
Minson (2-3 years post AA) and Campbell are way too shithouse and its understandable they weren't played.

Campbell had problems covering the ground and moved like the treefolk in LOTR.

Minson also had no mobility by the end and couldn't jump over a tin can.

Honest battlers like Sincliar, Bellchambers, Stanley, Smith, Lycett, Hickey were all on the markets for peanuts and far superior to English at this point.

I was crucified on here earlier in the year for questioning Wood’s performance and leadership but I’ll reiterate it again... his form has been below standard for quite some time now and he is not the inspirational leader we need to stand up in the moments that count.

Positive - loved Bailey Smiths effort today and when he flew the flag for one of his teammates who went down... there’s a lot to like about the kid - he’ll only get better.

Lycett is far from a battler

Lycett moved for $750k, hardly peanuts.

Trengove played quite well towards the back half of last year, seemed like ball between he and English for round 1. Timmy will be fantastic for us but clearly isn't there yet but Bevo didn't seem disappointed with him.

If you'd have told me at the start of the year that after Round 3 we would be 5th on the ladder with a 2-1 record and ahead of the Eagles, Pies, Tigers, Hawks and Demons, I would take it. Every. Damn. Time.

Yeah except now we know we should be 3-0. We should be better than GCS, especially at home.

its so sad that this young team is slower then those aged hawks and cats teams. leg speed has been an issue since the macca days,

the media goes on about melb having leg speed issues, yet no one brings up the dogs

leg speed makes us into 2 goals better in attack, and prob the same in defense.

watching at the ground, you really can tell it kills us

I'll just add that while we were 2-0 and had a positive start to the season, we are still young and building chemistry within the group. Let downs happen, even to the best teams.

I think 2019 is going to be another even season, if we can reduce the effects of let downs and instead of getting smashed, turn them into narrow losses/lucky wins, then I think we'll still finish in the 8.

Another game without injuries is also a positive, this will help with the cohesion and chemistry within the group.

Boyd will make a huge difference. Huge. Even if it's taking the heat off the other forwards or providing a chop out for English.

Would like to see Dale back in and looking forward to seeing Cavarra and JJ.

Cavarra will hopefully have a bit of the fight and ball hunting ability we were sorely lacking today.
