Somebody may be able to confirm this for me, but I vaguely recall a player playing for 2 clubs in the same round, either in the late 70's or early 80's? Pretty sure it was a split round.

He was cleared to the second club mid week I think.

I thought that it was Hawthorn & Essendon ruckman Bernie Jones, but it wasn't him.

Just doing it "manually" (so it's not impossible that I missed someone), and working through a list of players who played with two clubs in one season, I did not see anyone from 1970-1990 who played for two clubs in the same round. I would be surprised if such a thing was even within the rules, but it may have been.

Something similar happens in basketball because rounds don’t exist. Instead, a player might move from franchise to franchise while their old franchise has played more games, their new one has played less. In 3 hours Tobias Harris (LAC>PHI) will play his 83rd game of the regular season. The record is 88 by Walt Bellamy (NYK>DET) in the 1968/69 season.

He played for Collingwood one week & Fitzroy the week after.

Geez maybe I was wrong about my original post ie player playing for 2 teams in the same round. That's what tricks your memory plays on you!

That could well have happened. I did say I only checked "manually", and it's not out of the question that I missed something, so by all means have a look through the likely candidates yourself in case I did.

Sorry to bump this, but I always thought it was Bernie Jones too, but the stats say otherwise.

I also thought the games/rounds involved had to do with 1979, where the round 3 Carlton v Essendon game was plucked out of the draw, and actually played as a standalone game to launch the season:

R3 Carlton v Essendon, played 31 March

R1 6 games, played 7 April
R2 6 games, 3 played on 14 April, other 3 on 16 April (Easter Sat and Mon split round)
R3 5 games played on 21 April.

Also interesting that year that 2 games were played on Anzac Day on a Wednesday as part of round 4, between 'traditional rivals':
Hawthorn v South (Hawks scraped in by 94 points, Moncrieff 9 goals, and Bernie Jones dominant in hit outs funnily enough)
Melbourne v Richmond (a closer 10 point result to the Dees, with Phil Carman kicking 5, and captain-coach Ditterich the most possessions in the game and dominated the hit outs, while Roach kicked 7.4 for the losers. Sheedy had a forgettable Anzac Day with 9 possessions.)

As part of that Anzac split round the following Saturday 28th April, Collingwood at home took Saints to the cleaners, winning by 178 points, while Essendon drew with a fast-finishing Footscray at Western Oval. No exclusivity of the Anzac game in sight. Funny that.

Rex Hunt and Gareth Andrews were a direct swap. They even swapped jumper numbers - Rex went from 5 at Richmond to 6 at Geelong, and Andrews went from 6 to 5. They were similar sized players, so the property stewards probably just washed the jumpers and gave them to the new guys.
They each played in both the Richmond-Geelong games for the season - each played once for each side. (Hopefully, they played on each other - Rex was a slow, lumbering forward, and Andrews was a slow, lumbering backman).

Interestingly, Rex Hunt had a good year in the Brownlow in '74 - finished equal 5th (admittedly a long way off the leaders). But in those days, the votes were not tied to a particular game, or even a club - so there is no way of knowing whether Rex got most of his votes playing for Richmond or Geelong. That would have been interesting if the miracle had happened and he won.

Obvious follow-up question. Is Rex Hunt's 15 votes in the 74 Brownlow the most anyone has got while playing for 2 clubs in the same season?
