This was the Vic Metro squad of 30 in this year's championships - how many will get drafted? Is the criticism of their selection policy warranted? Also interested for those who have done a Phantom Draft how many of them you have in there and who is the first one you have listed?

veszpremi is still ineligble- so will be obvioudly eligble nxt yr.
A couple of yrs ago-certainly with vic country around 13-16 players were drafted or taken on the rookie draft..it dsnt appear that this will occur this yr. i believe dave dickson did the correct thing in slecting players who were footballers( win a national championship) rather than athletes which in some cases are more appealing and be absolutly slaughtered similar to the vic vs alliees game

no first rounders in there though.

A lot of criticism about Dickson about not picking guys who were 'draftable' in favour of guys who were mature, performing well but not draft candidates. But I can't find all these AFL-candidates who weren't in the Metro mix.

Hawkins and Everitt are the only certainties. Houli, Allen and Prismall are almost certain.

Batsanis, Smith, McKay, Anderson, Adams and Monaghan are all good players. Have to be in late round / rookie calculations.

So I'd say about 8.

From the City boys who were not part of Metro ... Kennedy was hurt and Goldstein hadn't debuted yet. Can't think of too many others who will get taken.

In my phantom draft I had only 14 Melbourne boys taken. That includes Kennedy and Hawkins. Also Aaron Edwards as a mature-age player. A lot of those were late-round speculative picks. I can see Melbourne struggling to provide 10 candidates on draft day.

is this due to Victoria's development programs or wat..because the success of Victoria in this superdraft will be limited. But then again it could just be this group of players and next year the tables may turn

Hard to tell if it is cyclical or not, have to wait and see.

On the other hand traditionally Vic provides fractionaly over half the players. So say 40 out of 70. Country has always been the heartland of the game and so would be expected to provide 20-25 guys to Metro's 15-20 in any year.

The rise and rise of QLD will impact numbers this year. WA is very popular with recruiters because of the style of player they produce. More and more development programs and more and more extensive scouting will impact the Vic numbers.

So would have thought 8-10 Metro guys was on the low side, but anywhere between 12-18 would be normal.

1998 - 16 guys (3 top 20)
1999 - 20 guys (7 top 20)
2000 - 19 guys (3 top 20)
2001 - 17 guys (7 top 20)
2002 - 23 guys (4 top 20)
2003 - 16 guys (4 top 20)
2004 - 20 guys (4 top 20)
2005 - 13 guys (4 top 20)

With Kennedy and Hawkins f/s it is going to be interesting to see if Metro can get its 4 top-20 selections this year. Allen, Houli, Everitt, Prismall, Goldstein (?). Can't see it happening.

Allen and Houli will fall inside the top 20 IMO

It looks like a very lean season for the Vic boys this year.

WA has almost 20 guys who could be taken in the ND. Afew guys like Wellingham and Bedford who are not well known are a good chance to go, at the very least late. Then someone like Peterson who is has played WAFL seniors and looks like a good thing to do inside top 60.

A lot of Victorian boys are on the borderline. Players such as Kelly, Mackay, N Smith, Dawes(inj), Adams, Faulks, Vasalevski, Batsanis, Anderson and Crozier could be drafted, rookied or miss out completely.
I have no doubt Kruezer would be a high first round selection if he was eligible for this draft and Spiteri would be a good chance to be drafted as well.
WA had a lot of talented players who simply didnt gel as a team.
I would be interested to see how many TAC bottom agers go in this draft.
For example I have Lobbe and Arrowsmith being drafted fairly late in the draft. Seriously considered Dean Putt as well.
My only certainties would be: Hawkins, Allen, Currie, Houli, Everitt and Prismall and a few of them are bottom aged.
Qld have an excellent junior program in place and the cynic in me thinks that recruiters see the Vic boys too much and find every possible flaw.

Could the reason for so many Vic players being drafted in the past be due to the convenience of all ready having them in vic, as the old attitude was that players didnt want to leave thier home state, as it said in the draft review players these days are more willing to get up and move away from home to play AFL.
Towards the end of most drafts more vic players are taken that other states, is that also because clubs think that its easier to take a local - just a thought.
Could there be a decline in the number of Vic players being drafted as scouting and recruiting gets better?

Yeah, i agree.

Have a look at this years metro metro team;
-Houli will most likely go top 25.
-If both veszpremi and kreuzer were eligable, they would be first rounders, with the latter being an easy top 5 (clearly ahead of leuenberger even).
-Tom Hawkins, had he not of been taken father son, would definately have gone number 1, no questions asked.

Combine with this;
- Chris Dawes= had he not of done his knee, he would have been a likely second rounder, with perhaps a chance of being top 20.
- leigh Adams AA carnival will definately not go underrated by recruiters. Will go inside the top 35.
- Jarrad Allen= See above, won't go outside top 40.
- Dave McKay= Seriously underrated. Reminds me so much of Kade Simpson it ain't funny. If any club took him witha top 30 pick, it wouldn't go unfounded. Plenty of scope, good pace and terrific 10/10 foot skills. WIll take a couple of years but will be a gem.

There are 8-9 players who would/ should all be considered top 35 prospects- genuine.
If we do simple mathematics; 9/35 x 100 gives us our percentage of metro players potentially in the top 35, which equates to 25.74% of players in the top 35 that come from vic metro. That is essentially 1 player every 4 picks from metro. take into account there are 5 other states and 2 territories included as players taken from the draft.

People, especially recruiters, are so pessimistic when it comes to the city boys. they expect so much, but really, what more can they give? this years crop are outstanding nationally, and victoria, namely metro, provide alot of those exceptional footballers.
If you put the allies team vs this years vic metro team, i have no doubts about who would win.

I agree with your assessment of Mackay. He looks like he will just get better and better as his body develops. I see a bit of Luke Power in him to be honest. I dont agree with your assessment of Veszpremi- he has physically developed very early and he I think he relies on body strength a lot. Though I should say Nathan Jones was a similar type and he may prove me wrong.

yeh veszpremi??cant see him going early this year (ineligible anyway) he has nothing special about him! he is a heavy man polaying against kids.nathan jones always had a brain on him with a huge ticker! the kid runs all day and has a well rounded game...veszpremi..i dont see anything that stands out at me!

How bout a booming right foot kick for 1, and pace to burn for another (2.91 20metre sprint at ais, same as chris judd at the same time if im not mistaken)

yeh i think ul find most kids have a booming kick!...yet most kids drafted have speed anyway mate!...if your sensitive on urslef patty then dont post!

Why do u assume that i'm pat veszpremi? i stick up for the kid because he obviously has talent. Ur views on drafted players are very simplistic, how many players drafter run under 2.92 for 20 metre sprint?

He's a good player. I wouldn't worry too much about his 20m time though. If others see shortcomings in his game, well, some of them (early developer) are fair enough. Others a little harsh...he is ineligible this year anyway and has a full year of TAC Cup footy to focus on.

Let's see if he continues to improve and really gets hold of the competition next year...
