IMO SOS doesn't like 'one-dimensional' players.

He likes his midfielders to have speed. He likes his KPP to have elite endurance.

He doesn't like 'plodders' even if they are freaking good at what they do, week in, week out.

I think overall he is looking for players with x-factor or points of difference.

This.

And SOS seriously has a “need for speed”!!!!!!!

If you can’t run then he’s most definitely not interested.

The Crows have been nothing but transparent in the last couple of years.

Clubs undergoing external AND internal reviews rarely have player retention issues.

No way would a club on the slide whose best 22 is 50% aged 30+ try to dump an expensive veteran....

To be fair, if I was Adelaide I would also pretend he was a required player.

No point broadcasting how desperate you are to offload a player....

What do we make of this? Crows management just bluffing as usual?

Trying to force his price up, stating he is a required player

I wonder if that's why Agresta was coy about what players we are targeting and on Liddle's comments about a small forward?

Cats out of the bag but probably doesn't want to keep publicly declaring we are chasing small forwards...might make us seem too desperate and make other clubs feel they can get a better deal than they otherwise would for guys like Papley, Betts etc.

He would have learned that art of negotiating from SOS, who is the master at it.

Maybe but i think it's clear we're 'developing' Agresta and giving him more responsibility.

I see Liddle's hand in this - reckon he has a clear idea what image and voice he wants the club to project, and at this point in time it's Liddle/Teague/Agresta who fit best. Open, honest, professional, engaging, funny, personable, knowledgeable. Judd seems to have been reeled back in after WheelGate, MLG is definitely not an accomplished media performer, and SOS can be...prickly.

...

(WAY)TL;DR - Mick seems to a personable and professional fella. The club loves where it's at, at the moment. Lots of young talent, natural upside, but always looking to add talent wherever we can. Club genuinely open to whatever strategy can improve us.

Pfft. Matty's was better.
Sakc.

SOS isn't prickly... he just has a very low tolerance for dickheads!

This is actually very true once I think about it, the only slow players (relative to size) who consistently got games this year would be Matt Kennedy, SOSOS and Cripps.

We also have lots of very, very quick players on our list, with the likes of Dow, Fisher, SPS, Cuningham all being super quick, and Jones, H, Curnow and McGovern are all incredibly quick for their size.

Even if we don't land any "big" fish this off-season, we'll still be a super exciting team to watch next year.

Is SOS leaving? Don’t remember when Agresta (if ever) did any media rounds.
SOS is not leaving and Agresta has done media quite a few times.
Mid season rookie draft was in studio to answer questions by Nat Edwards and David King at that live draft night.

SOS isn't leaving but has a lot on his plate this time of year. He'll bob up for an interview or two during trade week. Otherwise, is best to go about his business without interference.

Once again, an example of a club or player not being definitive. All he needed to say is that "Eddie will be playing with the Crows in 2020, he's not going anywhere. End of story."' Instead, it's "We certainly haven't put him on the trade table so unless something changes, there's not really anything more I can add."

Like Eddie himself a few days ago (who didn't categorically say that he would be playing with Adelaide next year), and Gibbs back in 2017/18, it leaves the door open, and suggests a move is possible.

This turned out much longer than expected, but:

  • List management
    • Brodie and pals focus purely on draft
    • Agresta sees the national champs and key games, sits on recruiting meetings
    • Agresta and SOS on list strategy; TPP etc
    • Agresta runs pro scouting (this means AFL and state leagues?)
    • Take a 3-5 year out timeframe re list management/TPP
    • List managers in open talks with team recruiters; ie if they were thinking of trading x pick, they run it by recruiters to see what they had planned
    • Future of scouting? Data analytics. We have a data and research crew that we worth together (with?). Spent some time with head of Seattle Seahawks research
    • Live trading: would be nice to be able to trade 2 years in advance. Comfortable with trading players on draft night. Will get there eventually. Pre/mid season trade period; still a long way off, but will happen eventually. Will need restrictions.
  • Team/list
    • Looking out 5 years, have a good spine locked away, depth in midfield. Lots of natural growth. Have put lots of games into kids. Don’t think we NEED to nail a Shiel/Cogs type in order to make the next step and then make it easier to recruit.
    • Russell been a huge influence on entire group.
  • Players
    • Walsh: club was always set on Sam as #1 pick. Didn’t actively seek to trade #1 pick, but didn’t rule out trading it. Walsh was nervy at 2018 combine interview; first and last time seen Sam flustered. Couldn’t have expected his 2018. Never seen anything like him in terms of ready to go. Hard to pick flaws, important that he copes with times if/when he isn’t performing at his peak.
    • Stocker trade: Liam was one of a number of players rated really highly. Had reached out to a few clubs in case a player was still available. Turned out as a win/win for both clubs. REALLY happy with how Stocker is progressing (adding HBF ability). Think Stocker would be right up there in 2019 draft. Stocker is a confident lad, but didn’t factor that into ‘would he be able to handle the scrutinty’ from pick swap.
    • BSOS: he’s had a really good year. Trying to find his feet early in the year as young KPP. He’s added spark to the club, a great character. Made good progress. Shown some form up forward.
    • Gibbo: Went into ND and RD 2018 with plan to keep spot open. Really happy with Gibbo’s output. Just as excited about Cottrell.
    • ‘Hidden gem’ on the list? really excited about TDK. Going to take time. He’s a ruckman (didn’t hesitate).
    • LOB flourished in second half, after struggling in first half.
    • Dow: last few weeks we saw the real Paddy Dow
    • Seen growth in SPS (HBF) and Fisher (HFF) in 2nd half of year. Were confident Samo would have a good year, completed majority of pre-season. In really good shape.
    • Cripps: great person, great leader. Helps having him to build around. Helps as part of the sell to other clubs. Been great for culture of the club.
  • Draft
    • 2019 draft pool: lacks top end tall talent, has a lot of talent across the rounds. Really good depth. Depth in rucks (particularly notable), midfield.
    • Settled on the pool of players to go in the draft, but not order yet. Still need interviews and combine.
    • Combine: full-on process, hectic couple of days. Focus on how players cope with it
    • Important to involve Teague (coach) in recruitment, so everyone is on the same page. Teague will be there at the combine, sitting in on interviews. Keen to be involved, but respects recruiters’ expertise
    • What does Agresta look for? How competitive they are. All the kids are skilled, but competitiveness the key (not just contested ball, but things like LOB’s running)
    • Younger brothers (Dow, TDK): Saw them when Vic Country visited. Would be nice to see them play together at some stage. Both talented, but a bit inconsistent. Henry Walsh is 203cm.
  • Targets:
    • Will keep pick 8? Long way to go. Want to improve the list, however we can. Draft, FA, trade. (Me reading between the lines, it’s going to be traded).
    • We have been linked to everyone….haha
    • No Cogs doesn’t change the situation. He’s a star but you move on really quickly. We had no idea how it would turn out.
    • Recruit wishlist: Didn’t bite on what kind players looking for. Laughed about how Cain Liddle spoke of our desire to recruit a small fwd. When pushed, said we would just want good players. Doesn’t really matter where. Did say multiple times that we love where our spine is at; so assume no big play for more KPP. Always consider age, but needs & requirements more important than age consideration at the moment.
    • Re Papley & Betts: not going to discuss other players, especially contracted ones.
    • Martin: met with him this week? Not entirely correct. Have met with him. Planning to meet with him again.
    • How we pitch players: it varies player to player
(WAY)TL;DR - Mick seems to a personable and professional fella. The club loves where it's at, at the moment. Lots of young talent, natural upside, but always looking to add talent wherever we can. Club genuinely open to whatever strategy can improve us.
