I think those who will only accept a top 10 player in the league as an “A-grader” and that anything less is a compromise have no idea how to build an AFL list. By that definition, we’re not getting an A-grader, but we need help. Wines, Crouch or their ilk would be fantastic.

Got to look at what is actually available. What is realistic. What could be part of a great team, not one guy who will do everything.

They'll want a first and maybe a second as well, can't help to think they will play hard because of the Gibbs trade...
If we could manage to get him for just a first, he be a great fit for us imo...

Yeah, it would be the first +. He has a bit more leg speed than Ollie so he'd be a good get. I'm exhausted from our previous dealings with them, think I'll sit this one out 😀

Ha. It's a bit like that, trades this year are more important to us than they have been considering all the great kids we've managed to get through the draft and now just trying to get the right players in with what we now have.
Can't wait til it's all done and dusted ...

Yeah - I get tired of trying to find a simple word to desribe a very good AFL player- so I use the expression A grader . Words like A b C elite blah blah ...there 18 players on the field at any time and another 4 on the bench - ranging from desperte fill ins to exxellent match winners and everything in between on any day and their impact changes from game to game anyway.

Wines ticks my boxes as a very good AFL player who would fill a need we have at Carlton - a need which will only grow louder and more obvious as Murphy/Ed/Kreuzer retire - which is why the club chased kelly/Coniglio and is now looking at others.

By your definition Wines and Papley are A-graders in their roles, but that being said, I rate the competition in one role far higher than the other.

To be fair, I didn’t offer a definition... just a rejection of the idea the only players good enough for us to target are the absolute AFL elite top ~10 in the league.

Anyone we get will have strengths and weaknesses, but some seem too keen to see what mooted trade targets CAN’T do rather than what they definitely CAN.

Wines and Papley would both be great gets for us. Ecstatic if we got either.
