I hope the mystery target is a quality mature bodied intelligent midfielder that can kick accurately.
In addition to Martin , Papley and Betts maybe would make 2020 campaign very exciting indeed.

If all the "Sydney will not trade Papley FULL STOP" business is more than just posturing, we should lock up Martin (second rounder plus, perhaps), Betts, Butler, then go see what we can shake loose with 9 and next year's first in terms of real-deal mids.

But this is why the List Mgrs like SOS and co get paid - to know what's real, what's not. I still think pick 9 gets Papley, this year, in Navy Blue.

But worst case scenario and he doesn’t arrive, we should be going straight to the Eagles and offering our pick #9 and #41 for their Picks #14 and #24.

#24 for Martin which is spot on, and we can still go deep see fishing with #14 and 2020 R1.

We should do what hawthorn does which is wrap up their deals quite early in trade week and GTFO. If Papley is gonna be contingent on what happens with sanchez Daniher, then do the deals for Martin, Butler and Betts (if one or both are in fact on the radar) and then focus on any other targets. Those guys don’t seem to be tied in with our first round picks in either this year’s or next year’s draft.

If Essendon lose Daniher, I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to go after Cas. He is by no means the number one forward, but his swingman ability shows that they can have the luxury of playing Hooker up forward for longer periods.

God the hate for Ellis is funny. He changed his mind and wanted a better deal that suits him better, it happens. Absolutely no different to what Papley is doing and we are all in love and stoked with him.
Players make agreements with clubs and change their mind all the time.

In all seriousness we need to move on from Papley very quickly if Sydney are hell bent on keeping him. Pick 9 is more than reasonable for a contracted Papley. Not worth 2 firsts or any more than 9 under any circumstance. Get Martin done (who'll be as good if not better for less) get Butler and Betts as small forwards for much less and lets turn 9 and next years first into an A grade midfielder. Much more to play out here and we can do more than Papley if its going to take 2 firsts to get him out of Sydney.
