I have a question, though; actually, two.
On what basis would Jeremy Cameron become available? He's contracted to the end of next year, where he becomes a RFA; the AFL will see them match any bid, if he's deemed an essential part of the club going forward, so money's not an issue if he wants to stay. He's just won a Coleman, he's been borderline the best true CHF in the comp for the better part of 4-5 years - only really being overtaken at all when Buddy fires; Kennedy's not a CHF - and he's a foundation player for them. Why would they let him go, at all?
And secondly, why on EARTH would he choose, willingly, to go to Essendon? They're not so much on the decline as they are in genuine free fall. Their midfield grunt is all imported - Smith and Shiel - Heppell is an every second week player, and Hurley's the only player in the back half worth a damn. McGrath is a back pocket who could become a decent mid - never top tier, but there's nothing wrong with a B+ player - and Francis is while an excellent flier at the ball a tad undersized to play as a KPF/KPD. Saad is quality, but he feeds into their outside game; he's not poor, but he is not a meat and potatoes footballer.
They haven't fixed any of their issues; namely, that you can take the ball from one end to the other without encountering an ounce of pressure or opposition attention, and that you can handily beat them up through the middle if their ruckman isn't halving the taps. The only way you lose to them is if you kick it to Hurley or Hooker (or Francis) when going forward, and they then slice you to pieces running the other way. But this is not an issue if they can't get the ball.
There is a very, very good chance that their setup is irredeemably flawed, and that this batch of players - regardless of who comes in or who leaves - can never gel sufficiently to get to the top tier. So, why would Cameron choose to leave GWS when they're matching Essendon's offer, their prospects are significantly better, and their trajectory is better?
It would take something GWS couldn't say no to make them push him out; Hurley and Hooker and this year's first as well as next years, or the nuffie who I quoted in the opposition supporter ridiculous things thread who suggested 6 picks, 4 of them in the first round to do it. But that then changes the question to why would you carve out your spine to compensate for your lack of a right knee? Sure, your leg works fine now, but you still can't walk. There is a point in which regardless of whatever you're attempting to trade for it just isn't worth it. Cameron would take so much to extract from GWS that it would truly be ridiculous, yet I see it's something that has been taken and spoken of as though it's a genuine possibility without much examination into why.
'Spose it helps that it's Essendon. They're not required to behave logically.
