So Agresta said we don't really need support for Cripps.
I think it was Jeremias who wisely said that as every year goes by, the less we need to find this support for Cripps.
We have to put it on the players we now have to step-up tio support - Setterfield, Kennedy, Dow, SPS etc.

As someone put forward to me today in regards to Gaff; If indeed West Coast are happy to move him on in order to get Kelly, why not just deal with Geelong?

Fair point harks . The growth from within factor .

What if the agreement is structured very clearly into two seperate agreements that roll into the other?

E.g. contract has a 2 year term at X dollars per year, followed by a 5 year term at X dollars per year. The contract says the second part of the contract is automatically triggered at date X unless Gaff gives written notice to terminate the deal

If you couldn't unilaterally terminate a rolling contract....I'd still be renting and working at my first job.
No comment. We are talking mere hypothetical bullshit involving footy, in here, nothing less nothing more. You should consult your lawyer for advice. Lets get back to footy.

Ok, so you have no understanding how contracts work. Thanks for clearing that up for us.

An AFL contract can easily be structured for terms and options. JKelly's contract was the test case and got ticked off by the AFL.
OK. I'm glad for your inclusion of the highlighted aspect of your comment; thank you, you have no idea how much I appreciate that. Now lets go back to talking footy.

Remember when Ross Lyon unilaterally terminated his contract a year early to go to Freo?

The point is whether he could have been pursued for damages for having done so. But lets move on, we are mere novices guessing and speculating on the limited info we sometimes manage to scrape up. Especially me.:)

Maybe i did as well!

All good HARKER

All good Chism.

I thought it was a fair idea as that every year that rolls by, the older, stronger and wiser our young midfield gets.
At some point in time, we'll have to put it on the players we have to do the job. We missed on Coniglio and we should up the ante on on young mids.

Speak for yourself.

JKelly's management shared most of the details of his contract publicly. Look it up.

You also can't sue for damages when someone enacts a valid clause in a contract

Considering the AFL is about a decade or 2 behind other major sports, it's no surprise player managers are following the examples set by their USA counterparts.

I did speak for myself. :)
Ha? in relation to the bolded aspect of your post. We were discussing means of bringing a valid agreement to an end.

Who goes out?
I know it is getting hard to fit everyone in, but you just cant leave a player like Marchbank out. I doubt Simmo will play every game next year, and there is no guarantees that Docherty will be up to his 2017 standard, so based on form I think it will be one of those. Of course if they both play well and injury free I think we will have to look at dropping Plowman.

Dropping Plowman? Our most versatile defender and 3rd in B&F. I love Marchy but Plow is one of our most important and consistent players.

I don't think you understand how Damages work.

Enacting a clause in a contract is not breaching a contract.

I doubt this conversation is interesting to most but why do you think a unilateral option to terminate offends against the general rules of contract? There are termination for convenience clauses in many contracts. They depend on the wording of the clause but I doubt that's going to be an issue here.

I suspect the issue is less one of the law of contract and more one of the AFL/AFLPA wanting to remove contractual clauses that can unilaterally end contracts early. Not to mention the knock on effects in terms of salary cap, free agency etc.
