Just saw on Channel 10 news that Collingwood unveiled our 5 new recruits today at Lexus Centre.

Ben Reid has been given Taz's old #20 jumper.

It looked like Chris Dawes got #31 (So JA will be getting a new number next year)

MM was also holding a #33 jumper but don't know who got that.

Does anyone know the numbers that the Brown, D)ck and Goldy got?

JA is now No. 9 which is his old number at the Northern Knights in the TAC cup

Good to see the boy make the top ten. Best wishes to him for season 2007 that he develops into a senior player worthy of a single digit number!!

I reckon it will be huge year for JA. Look forward to dads photos of him playing for Collingwood.

Let's hope he has more luck with that number than our latest players have: Rowe, Freeborn, Matt Francis, Jon Ballantyne (killed Kernahan one day), Hardie, Andrew Tarpey and Brian Taylor.

Hope he gets a run next year and shows a bit.

Collingwood's number one draft pick in 2006 is a tall, left footer who can play as a key forward and who has been handed the number 20 jumper by the Magpies for next season.

But don't expect 17-year-old Ben Reid, the son of former Carlton and Footscray utility Bruce, to be a replacement for Chris Tarrant.

Reid, one of two first round selections at last week's NAB AFL draft that the Magpies were able to secure as a result of letting Tarrant go to Fremantle, already stands over 196cm.

But he is adamant he is a totally different player to Collingwood's 2003 All-Australian.

"It (number 20) has been a big number here but I just want to play my own footy, concentrate on my own game and try and win the respect of my teammates here," Reid said.

"I am not the same sort of player as him, I play up the ground a bit more."

"Probably my versatility is my strength, just been able to play in a range of positions and marking is one of my strengths as well."

And Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse is certainly not expecting Reid to be a replacement for Tarrant.

When asked on Friday if Reid plays like Tarrant; a candid Malthouse replied: "I hope not."

"The only similarity is he a left footer, he won't be playing full-forward," Malthouse said of his top draft pick.

"We didn't get Ben to play like Chris Tarrant, he plays more like Josh Fraser."

Reid was ineligible under the father/son rule because his father did not play 100 games with either the Blues (86 games) or the Bulldogs (33 games).

However despite his father being remembered mostly as a Carlton player, Reid said he was happy to be joining the Blues' arch-rivals.

"I am just happy to be in Melbourne and Collingwood is a great club with a great history," said the younger Reid, who hails from the Victorian country town of Wangaratta.

But what about his father's reaction to his son becoming a Magpie?

"Dad is pretty happy about it, he doesn't really care, he is just happy I have got the opportunity," Reid said.

The Pies also unveiled their other draft picks on Friday in 193cm Nathan Brown (no relation to either his Richmond or Melbourne namesakes), 194cm Chris Dawes, 182cm forward Brad ******** and 191cm Tyson Goldsack, who at 19 is the oldest of the five boys.

While Malthouse said Goldsack, a versatile big man from Gippsland Power who has already done an AFL pre-season with Hawthorn and who was the Pies' last selection at pick 63, might be the first to play next year given his added maturity - Dawes is unlikely to play at all in 2007.

That is because the strongly-built key position player, who already weighs 96kg, suffered a serious knee injury in the final round in the under 18's last season.

But such is the Pies' high regard for a player who impressed in the national under 18 championships this year, the Pies still chose him at pick 28 and Malthouse does not consider his selection to be a risk.

"Justin Leppitsch was drafted with an ACL (knee) injury and he had a magnificent career and Paul Licuria has had two and had won two Copeland Trophies," Malthouse said.

"The only risk for us is other clubs would select Chris before us."

And Dawes is already focused on the long-term rather than the short-term.

"I understand it's going to be a long, lonely road to recovery but I am quite young (just 18) and if I want to have the best chance of having a career I need to take the whole year off to get it right," he said of his injured knee.

I didn't know that Leppa had a knee reco. He always moved pretty well. Hopefully Dawes' mobility won't be effected.

What I don't understand is why clubs give new recruits the numbers of a player leaving. I understand it when a player is retiring but when N.Brown went out of WB, Cooney took his old number. I guess it wouldn't exactly mean jumper sales but I'd give the new guy a different number and perhaps even give the old players number to an ordinary player or at least a high draft pick then people would buy a new jumper to get a new number. Just my little crackpot scheme.

Guys, this is not a dig at Collingwood but the photo of your 5 new guys in todays AGE (Sport 6) is a bloody disgrace.I have never, ever seen a more down trodden, miserable and unintrested group of kids who have just been drafted to an AFL club! These guys should have a smile ear to ear but they just look pissed!...........

because that photo was taken of them while they were standing to the side while mick was having a press confrence with the media , it kind of caught them off guard.

citizen, you are right, that is a disgracful photo to put in the paper. They look like they have just lost a grand final.

Do you think they weren't happy with their numbers? I mean i'd not want one that Cam Cloke previously had. lmao

They just got told Anthony Rocca had eaten all the pies

The thing that surprised me was the height of Goldsack, Teabag isn't far off the key positions around him

I'm not sure if this was the picture of discussion, but when I saw it I was amazed at how big the lads are. Being the youngest kid in the draft, I pictured Reid being a skinny kid, but the cannons are huge. Same could be said about Browny and Dawes.

Got no clue why people continue to jump the gun on Clarke. Sure, he looks a genuine prospect and may well be a champion, but the wraps on him from supporters have just gone over the top.

we didnt take any mids in the draft. that suggests that we have something in mind to fix that problem.
my guess is Clarke. It could be that they expect next years draft to chock full of quality mids who knows...
