Dan Butler is no where near the player Papley is so let’s not even consider that as an option. No more second stringers or gap fillers.

Agreed Butler is not as good as Papley, but I honestly think you are giving him a disservice by calling him a second Stringer.

Richmond has extraordinary depth of players in his position, would be a walk up starting 18 player at most other clubs.

This is fine if you have a player in peak form and in the club's best interest to keep, and i know Daniher is a 'once in a generation' type player when fit, but really? 11 games in 2 years, a failing body, and a genuine desire not to play at the club anymore, I'd very much doubt keeping him over some decent picks is doing the right thing by the club. In fact, it's screwing them big time, considering they need to get some serious talent through the door soonish to assist Heppel & co. I think he's just being his egotistical stubborn self.

That's a fair call. My comment was more around dodo as a whole, not just the Daniher situation.
I also think it takes a certain amount of ego to do this sort of role. SOS has it, Dodo and Bell have it.
Yet look at Justin Reid who jumps at shadows. Hughes and Roger's had no 'presence' about them at all and this showed with some of their trade debacles.

Now I'm not doubting anyone who does this role's knowledge. Footy clubs are too smart to have mugs running the show. But I believe a fair serve of self confidence, bordering on arrogance even is what sets the stallions apart from the teaser ponies.

If we were serious we would replace SOS with Mick Gatto as head of recruitment. Papley deal would be done now for pick 115 and the Swans pick 8 in return.

You snatched those words right out of my throat, fist and all.

Hmmm, maybe if it was a one off.

But generally, as a list manager, you're better off going for good value, and getting things done to improve your list.

Geelong, Richmond, Hawthorn, West Coast, Sydney are all generally good to trade with. Which method is more successful?

I may have forgotten someone blindingly obvious but have any of those teams been in the same situation Essendons currently in for Joe?

Geelong held Kelly to his contract. Buddy was uncontracted etc. Seems like when your star player is contracted but he wants out, you need to dig your heels in. Sets a precedent if you don’t.

This would be a lot easier to judge if we knew what the offer to Essendon was.

Not when we are crying out for a need he can likely deliver it`s not, especially if SOS can get pick 25 back or something like it.

This.....
I reckon that’s the sticking point.

Sydney may need the second for the Essendon deal, even if it’s only second round pick upgrades

It feels like Papley is directly tied to Daniher to me.

Happy to get both Martin and Betts. Will be disappointed if Papley doesn’t arrive but I hope we’ve got a contingency plan for another small forward.

I don’t think I’ll accept us not addressing the small forward position going on 3 years + now.

If Papley doesn’t come, take Elijah Taylor in the draft

I'm not sure how much Hughes and Rogers actually negotiated with trades, I know Swann had a large role in that area. No doubt we were well off the pace previously though.

Like I said, it would be different if this were a one off for Dodo.

I would consider the Kelly situation at Geelong very differently. He was a first year player, wanting to go to a direct challenger. They named a price, and actually got an even better deal this year.

My own personal feeling is the Papley deal still gets done, but not until the Wednesday deadline (as Barass suggested)

No need for panic stations at this point in time folks 🙂
Agree with you, I too see high profile trade come to fruition next week and
should Bombers take the testosterone intractable no budging path, it will be a bitter disappoint for EFC.
Holding a player against their wishes is a faux pas a club should never make.

The following are equitable trades and SOS should really get these done:

Papley for Pick 9
Martin for Pick 43 and Carlton's Future 2nd Round Pick in 2020
Betts for Pick 85

Next year, we will probably finish just outside the 8. We then use our 1st Round Pick and our Future 1st Round Pick in 2021 to get an A grade gun midfielder to help Cripps. This A grade gun midfielder will be paid a million a year.

In the year 2021, we will make the top 4 and vie for the premiership.

There's a Phil at every workplace.

Except I can't figure out who it is at mine. Hmmmmm

:p
You know what though? Every workplace needs a Phil. They're the battle colours for everyone to rally around when things aren't going well. A self-aware Phil is one of the best assets a workplace can have!
