I hope Dodo and SOS collude now; to invite GWS into a possible 3 way involving Daniher, our 9, and ? to us and Essendon. That might shake up the Swans a little.

Must not pay overs for anyone and more importantly do anything. Let Sydney then worry about Papley long distance relationship. Draft a small forward / mid kid, which there a couple at around pick 9 and keep building.
Get Martin and Betts, and play them forward with Cuningham.
I think the Kelly deal has over inflated the market and has lead to clubs ( see Essenscum) over valuing there players, read they want 5 and 9 plus a player for Daniher, yet they won’t offer him a contract extension beyond his current deal, this has led Syd to do a double take on 9 for Paps and 25, same with Gc wanting 21 for AhChee and a first for Martin, I think once one of them go through for there true value the market will readjust and the rest will tumble.

The following are equitable trades and SOS should really get these done:

Papley for Pick 9
Martin for Pick 43 and Carlton's Future 2nd Round Pick in 2020
Betts for Pick 85

Next year, we will probably finish just outside the 8. We then use our 1st Round Pick and our Future 1st Round Pick in 2021 to get an A grade gun midfielder to help Cripps. This A grade gun midfielder will be paid a million a year.

In the year 2021, we will make the top 4 and vie for the premiership.

I would do those trades myself.

No doubt, however, we are angling for something along these lines:

Papley and pick 25 for picks 9 and 43
Martin for pick 25
Betts for pick 85

I would much prefer to keep the 2020 second. I would package that up with our 2020 first for a gun mid (B Crouch, B Hill). Wishful thinking!

That's a fair call. My comment was more around dodo as a whole, not just the Daniher situation.
I also think it takes a certain amount of ego to do this sort of role. SOS has it, Dodo and Bell have it.
Yet look at Justin Reid who jumps at shadows. Hughes and Roger's had no 'presence' about them at all and this showed with some of their trade debacles.

Now I'm not doubting anyone who does this role's knowledge. Footy clubs are too smart to have mugs running the show. But I believe a fair serve of self confidence, bordering on arrogance even is what sets the stallions apart from the teaser ponies.
I get what you are saying, but I think SOS is a bit more 'Stephen Wells' like (though less passive), in that he's prepared to pay overs (not massive overs) to get a deal done to address a specific need, but not bend over for a team trying to pay nothing.

Maybe a future third would be more appropriate than 41. Agree it’s a hefty price, I just really want papley and rate him highly.

I can understand why others may not agree though.
Yeah I rate him very highly and not just as a small forward, has massive midfield potential with his clean hands side step and acceleration, really hope SOS can get it done without giving away the Crown Jewels.

Imagine it all boils down to the last hour when what we all expect to happen finally bloody happens.

Blues: Pick 9, 43 to Swans for Paps and 25
Blues: Pick 25 to Suns for Martin
Swans: Pick 5 and 43 to Dons for Daniher

Truth is, who can blame the Swans? Simple equation, Daniher trade goes through, Papley gets traded; else he doesn't.

So I wouldn't call it hard ball, it's purely circumstantial.
I think "hardball" means SOS might not get that pick 25 back from the Swans as they have already agreed to a trade.

I post this to give an indication as to what Essendon might be thinking re Daniher (which is really nothing new from what Dodoro has stated, to be fair). Nevertheless (and apologies for the long post, I do try to avoid them)...

Was speaking to an Essendon supporting mate. He's got an intelligent, in-depth and (mostly, we all have our biases) objective view on football, so I respect his opinion. This all assumes that Essendon believes that Daniher will get back to full health and 2017-type form (if not, then clearly they'll trade him, and all this is posturing to get the best deal).

He doesn't want Daniher to be traded. He sees Essendon's window as now (whether they're good enough to go all the way is another question). Hurley and Hooker have a couple of years left. Fast forward three years without those two and Daniher and they have no spine, and are then years away. All the effort to bring in Shiel, Smith, Saad and Stringer is wasted. It's kind of like go for broke now.

A fit Daniher gives Essendon a pretty talented and potent forward line - Daniher, Stringer, Fantasia, Smith, McDonald-Tipungwuti. Take Daniher out, they have no decent key forward. Even picks 5 and 9 in this year's draft doesn't help them replace Daniher; they'd still be 5 years away from contending again.

He's fully aware that they might lose Daniher for less next year as a free agent, but would rather they take the risk. Maybe Daniher being fit and Essendon winning games changes his mind about leaving in 12 months time. Or, of course, maybe not.

He talked of the key forwards in the game. Kennedy, Hawkins and Franklin are coming to the end of their careers. The new lot of star forwards are Cameron, Lynch, Brown and Daniher (when fit). The next gen coming through include Curnow, Naughton, the Kings etc. A fit Daniher is irreplaceable for Essendon, and as we all know, unlike other clubs, they don't have a quality back up talls (hard to imagine them winning too many finals with McKernan/Brown/Stewart).

If this is how they're thinking internally, they may very well decide not to trade him (unless Sydney throws in a decent replacement, like McCartin).

I'll trade my Mrs Macs meat pie for a Four 'n' Twenty with a Hot jam Donut from the Victoria Markets coming back my way.

Any takers?
Make it a cheese and Bacon one and it's a deal.:p

Sydney should just do the bloody trade of Papley to Carlton regardless of the Daniher trade. That way they get Pick 9 through the door to use on whatever else they want and then they can go get Daniher in 12 months when he nominates Sydney again (similar to Kelly getting to West Coast 12 months after nominating them).

Sydney have to be realistic about 2020. They aren’t making the finals even without Papley moving/getting Daniher through the door in place of Papley. Just make the trade and go get Daniher next year.

I think McCartin is the one that might just get the deal done, I think 5 and McCartin is very fair, just not sure Syd want to give him up, also heard Bumbers want 5-9 and a player which is wY over

Papley is interesting. He's got anywhere between 2 and 4 years left on his contract. Unless his girlfriend relocates to Sydney, he's going to want to move again at the end of next year, then the year after and so on; that's unlikely to change. So hopefully Sydney see that this year is their best chance of maximising a return for him (probable, but not certain) and agree to the inevitable.

I think it's a period we would all like to forget..
(Bar Crippa), but I don't know if that was great foresight or just pot luck. I seem to remember reading we were keen on McCarthy, who went one pick earlier.

Crippa credits Rogers for spending time with him in the lead up to that draft so credit where it's due. Swann disappeared in June 2014, a few months before our greatest WTF moment with the Jaksch/Whiley trade. Clearly Trigg let Rogers loose on that, not a great time for the club.

Agree, 5 and McCartin and they'd have to consider it. Also agree that Sydney won't want to give him up. Not sure though how they play Franklin, Daniher, Reid and McCartin in the same forward line (especially without Papley).

Edit: And Blakey, although you suspect he'll eventually end up in the midfield.
