Bluemour Melting Pot XXI - Like seriously, the polar ice caps have got nothing on us

Yeah, exactly. Barrett suggested Melbourne should make an offer to Martin and try and convince him they'd be a solid destination as well. Martin's manager said that has already happened and they've been told "no". Can't see a club paying massive overs for a player who has specifically told them he doesn't want to play for them. Most clubs are perfectly reasonable organisations, and won't fu** with someone by employing them against their express wishes.

Yeah swings & roundabouts - each club has to deal with both sides of the equation, no need to draft him in spite or against someones will if they clearly don't want to. You'd hope carlton wouldn't do it if someone said they didn't want to play for us

It is the point that immediately came to mind for me anyway. I don't see Dodoro as the 'bad' guy in this situation.

Dodo wasn't the 'bad guy', so much as the 'stupid guy'.
He was offered massive overs for a player who has managed 11 games in 2 years, doesn't want to be at the club (or in the same state), and will walk as a Free Agent in 1 year's time.
This was a chance for them to start to address their list imbalance. They will have had 3 years without a first round pick. Madness.

There is every chance he gets fit, plays 20+ games, bombers make finals and he agrees to terms. I don't think he is a certainty to get to the swans.

If he gets injured again then he leaves.

With the way the AFL has been towards us this season I would say it will be Richmond's home game lol

Of course it will be, Channel Hamish and the AFL want us big a crowd and ratings as possible to see the ferals unveil their flag.

Lots of discussion about the pro's and con's of swapping this year's Pick 9 for future picks. It appears some of the issues we had this trade period was a lack of 'fire-power' (attractive picks) to get our trades done without another club assisting us. Does that add weight to the pro's side? Keep the discussion coming folks - very interesting reading!

No rush.

Reckon we chat to a few clubs who we think might be open to it, then wait til just before that pick on draft night. If someone like Kemp slides and we can get a really good young prospect through the door, great. If not, and we're not enamored with the players available at that pick, make those calls and see if someone else is willing to overpay to get a player they weren't expecting to be available. Geelong, for example, might be prepared to offer up their future first plus either 17 or 24 if someone they're really keen on is still available at 9.

Is there a possibility that Carlton, Melbourne and GC get together with the AFL and say “Look, he wants to get to Carlton. Melbourne have said they aren’t taking him. Just let it happen now”
Especially if we are led to believe that both list managers were happy for the trade to be done.
Six weeks of uncertainty will not help anyone.
Colin Young was on the radio yesterday talking about the impact the long trade period and the uncertainty around it was having on players. Surely a situation like this is not going to help.

There's not really any need for all parties to meet, it's just up to the Suns to do the right thing and delist him.

Not so sure Martin's getting to us in the PSD, given one of the AFL's mouthpieces in Barrett in his latest column seems to be pushing against it.

Melbourne
Ifyou don't throw a curveball offer to Jack Martin via your access to the first "live pick" in the pre-season draft ...
thenyou're being negligent. Take the shot.

Barrett seems to ignore the fact that, players can nominate their contract terms. If Martin was happy to go to the Demons he will put a price on his head that allows them to pick him, if not, he will engineer a deal with us.

Can you imagine if he puts $800,000 for 1 year, Melbourne pick him and he’s not interested.

I wouldn't be surprise if we added multiple DFA's.

We have 6 spots. Let's assume we plan on getting Martin in PSD, so 5.
Newnes & Knight as DFAs.
Take 3 picks to the draft.

Something like that.

And Bennell please as Moneyball option. Could you imagine Richmond fulfilling his talent risk/reward... Seriously spitting chips.

Operation get Martin, Knight and Bennell... and maybe Newnes :tonguewink:

If the Suns delist him, they lose any bargaining power or perceived bargaining power that they may have built up. It’s possible the Suns know Martin will get to us and are making a point. Adelaide or Port won’t be in a similar position next year and will need to trade for any targets.

If they delist him, it’s entirely pointless.

I'm heartened by the confidence here that we will get Martin for free. I'm heartened to hear his manager say that he still wants to come to Carlton and has declined Melbourne. However, despite this, I'm still very uncomfortable with this whole situation. This appears to be a really important acquisition for the club on field, and the potential to get this for free is really exciting. But I just have a feeling there is more to play out here with Melbourne. I have a gut feeling they will make a move here, whether that is reorganizing salary cap space or using May and Jetta to convince him to come to Melbourne.

Perhaps I'm being irrationally anxious but until Martin is in a navy blue jumper I will be a bit on edge.

Gavstar suggested something above that has perked my interest. What terms can players include in their contract? Being realistic here, can Martin include 4 weeks annual leave mid season, if he chooses? Obviously as a deterrent to others, but if he gets to us, you would hope, he doesn’t enact it?

Other than length and $$$$ what else can a player do to enhance his chances of getting to pick 3?

Bennell is scary. Risky. Don't want.

Gold Coast should take him back with open arms now that their culture is fixed.

Au contraire. I think Barrett is writing that because its understood that Melbourne will be passing.

If we put all the machiavellian machinations aside, Barrett is right. If I was a Melbourne supporter I would want my team to have a sniff, at least be asking the questions of Martin and his manager.
