By George you're right.

I forget how young these kids are when they're picked. Maybe the age should be increased.

I don't see that happening, though.

Paul roos has been banging on about the age for a while, stating they are drafted too young.

Keep draft age at 18, but 1st season must be spent in the VFL/SANFL,WAFL, then onto AFL.
Good for development of body and mind, and a full year to acclimatise to the AFL environment.

"No reason we can't bring the draft forward 2 weeks so the kids can have their future sorted sooner."

"Year 12 exams."

"Oh yeah. Well, let's make them wait an extra year or two instead."

🤨

Oh Coops :p
It was more about that direct off-season, why make them wait to join the team a month or 2 just so they miss that training time. Not about the age of the kids themselves.

Otherwise we might as well like soccer where kids are 14 years (even younger than that tbf) old and contracted to clubs.

Yeah I've heard a few times and I agree. 18/19 really is so young to be playing against fully grown men.

Especially from the mental health perspective it's such a big shift. A couple months ago they had to ask to use the bathroom, now they're expected to be professional athletes and handle copping as much scrutiny of anyone in the country!

So 1st day of draft is just round one and then second day they do all the remaining rounds and then onto the Pre-Season Draft and Rookie draft later that night ?

I read somewhere that the Pre Season and Rookie drafts are the following day (Friday?).

Year 12 exams...

Can't see it happening, but one scenario would be the draft age being 19, with a state or country-wide competitions for the 18 year olds to play in during the year following their year 12, shown on TV (a la US College), with the National Championships after the GF. Turn the Champs into a big thing that we all watch in a footy vacuum. Would create much more interest in both the Champs and the Draft, with the draft to happen straight after the Champs. Interviews, testing etc can still be done through the year.

Anyone have access to the GC Bulletin article where they huff and puff about redrafting Martin in the PSD, in spite of the requirements?
Outline no comprende

No comprende for me either.

Gold Coast Suns considering shock bid for Jack Martin in AFL pre-season draft

GOLD Coast are considering making the audacious move of selecting wantaway Sun Jack Martin in the AFL pre-season draft despite the $1 million price tag that comes with his first year.

The Suns are contemplating making the shock decision to take up the offer, with a senior Gold Coast official refusing to rule out picking the player who could walk for nothing after demanding a first-round draft pick in return for Martin during the trade period.
Gold Coast have only just started to get their salary cap in order and taking on Martin’s huge contract, even for a year, would be risky.

Seems we will be heavily front-loading the first two years of Martin's deal.

Jack Martin will be paid about $2 million over the first two years of his massively front-loaded five-year deal as a result of a deal struck between Martin and the exiting Gold Coast player's preferred destination club, Carlton.

Martin's terms – nominated in a bid to assure him of safe passage to Carlton in the pre-season draft – guarantee him more than a $1 million next year, and then close to that amount in year two of a five-year deal that pays him an aggregate of about $3.1 million, with incentives that could stretch that to about $3.5 million if he performs well.

The front-loading of the contract – designed to deter both his current team, Gold Coast, and Melbourne from picking him up – means that Martin will be close to Carlton's highest paid player, potentially ahead of Patrick Cripps, in those two years, although he will average a more moderate guaranteed salary of about $625,000 per season over the entire length of the contract.

Right yeah sure. Sure. So the Afl send their guy up to GC to help right the ship. And it makes sense does it to pay 1m for a player who downright hates ya. Doesn’t want a bar of you. Be terrific for building culture etc. and you’re doing all this because you didn’t accept a deal that most people felt was reasonable? The same deal we offered to GC for Setters? Yeah sure.

I say BULLSHIT they will take him. Complete and utter bullshit. No way. Zero chance. Don’t want to see it discussed again. It’s bullshit.

According to some on this board, Prestia was a small, soft, stat padder @ GCS. [emoji2369]
I think there's a tendency to undervalue opposition players, particularly those in poorer sides - funnily enough, something that we as Blues fans should be mindful of given our recent history.

It's BF. It's what we do.

GC - they can't be this stupid!
AFLPA?
Won't be surprised if the posturing is an attempt to bring pressure to bear to get their hands on our pick 9. If they redraft him it will go to court and create a major rift between the players (AFLPA) and the league

I stupidly fed a tiger troll on the main board and had a very uncharacteristic meltdown.

Is it just me or have Tigers supporters (certain ones, in particular) been excessively insufferable over the last two years?

No different to how many of us will be after we win a couple of flags after a prolonged period of shitness I'd say! 😆

Plenty of good ones. Some on here have been fine lately.

Everyone on their merits my friend.

This Cochrane guy is starting to sound like a legit narcissist. Would joy me greatly watching him **** that place up even more.

Although it will help us free up Salary further down the track when it comes to re-signing our champs, I still think it's a massive risk.
What's to stop Martin going hard for a year or two then slacking off for 3?

Not much, but the same could be said of any player.

He'll be paid a lot of money but I don't think this is an unreasonable risk to take.

We've got a lot of money and we've structured it so that we can give that extra signing bonus to Martin in year one. It's actually pretty smart to clear a fair chunk of his salary in that year.
