What's to stop him slacking off for 5?
...Or anyone else for that matter?
5 Years seems a bit much for someone who is not a bonafide proven superstar of the Danger/Dusty variety.
I hope there's KPI's and clauses all through that contract.

Won't be surprised if the posturing is an attempt to bring pressure to bear to get their hands on our pick 9.

If we didn't cave during trade week, I can't see us caving now...

Hopefully this puts the chances of GC and Melb drafting Martin to bed in wveyone’s Minds:

He can take his 2m earnt in the first two years and retire. Like retire. He doesn’t need to stay. He doesn’t need to pay back what he earnt. Or stay. He can barely bother for two years. Take the money.

And quit.

And if the stupid AFl system conspired to send an out of contract player to a place he doesn’t want to go after he’s played somewhere for SEVEN years....

Who could blame him. It’s all bullshit. It won’t happen. And anyone with half a brain knows it.

No comprende for me either.

Gold Coast Suns considering shock bid for Jack Martin in AFL pre-season draft

Surely this is a bluff and a terrible one at that.

They are making themselves look sillier by the minute. And would be downright stupid to actually take him.

He at one point was in Mike Sheehan’s opinion vying with Judd for most electric mid in the game.
Given how his career turned out, Sheehan was right, but there was a 3-4 year patch at Port where he stalled a bit due to injury and Matthew Primus affected apathy. He certainly broke out, but after that he didn't exactly set the world afire. He's similar in that respect to Wingard, albeit as a midfielder and Wingard's issue is that Port bulked him up and made him less agile, wreaking a player who could've been among the best small/medium forwards the game has ever seen and turning him into a B+/B- midfielder.

Martin will continue to be the player he's been all his career, but hopefully like Prestia he is just a bit more of it more often.

Every year I think the draft is too late in the year. There's no reason imo that it can't be held a 2 weeks after the trade period. It's better for the kids because there future is sorted sooner
Most of these kids still doing exams. I think the AFL delay it on purpose to allow for them to concentrate on exams. This is the thing about their future too, about 60% of those even drafted will not make a career out of football. Add in the ones that looking to get drafted and do not get picked up and you will find, our apparent want to have draft pushed earlier is not right thing for those kids. One of the few things the AFL get right by listening to parents and people in industry of these teenage pathways. It is why it has been this late in November for quite some time now.

I read somewhere that the Pre Season and Rookie drafts are the following day (Friday?).
Well you are probably right. I read nothing and going off vague memory of last year. I thought they did rookie draft in the evening on day two. My memory probably playing tricks on me.

Edit:
Gone and checked online the timing to find out for sure.
Friday, November 22 – Trade period (draft picks only) and delisted free agency period end

Wednesday, November 27 – National draft – first round only
Thursday, November 28 – Remainder of national draft, preseason draft and rookie draft. Delisted free agency period recommences.

Monday, December 2 – All player movement periods end. Final list lodgements for season 2020.

V happy to get Martin for free.

But how many elite juniors have middling AFL careers for seven years, then get traded and suddenly turn into superstars?

* Acknowledging that the last seven years at GC would have been hard for any kid to flourish....

We don’t need him to be a superstar, we just need him to improve our side. If he can bring one elite level skill/attribute and fill an area of need, the rest is gravy

If they did would they also have to abide by his contract demands? asking for an idiot mate.........

Yep, including the ~$2M in the first two years as is being reported now. Them being 'strong' would be a great way to completely **** the GCS cap after they've spent so much time trying to rectify it. The last thing they need is the AFLPA on their back while trying to manage TPP issues with a guy playing NEAFL for approx. $100k a game.

I agree.

I think Martin brings a lot to the table as is (inside-outside skills, beautiful kicking, strong tackling, marking option etc). I think he is an excellent fit for our side and will improve us.

I'm just not too keen on the 'if he can finally reach the potential he showed as a junior' talk.

Does anyone else feel that Martin will improve because he will have Betts as a mentor? Wasn't that one of the reasons Martin wanted to come to the Baggers?

If Betts can take him under his wing and be a role model for him, who knows what can happen! Look at how Charlie Cameron turned out with Betts guidance.

It's better for the kids because there future is sorted sooner, giving them more time to move if necessary and get set up before the pre-season starts. Also the obvious is that they get a longer pre-season training stint in which could make a big difference. Teams are already training now so the kids are just missing out on more elite level fitness training by waiting around for the draft.

Think most are currently completing their secondary exams ??? .....

Jack will fulfil his potential at Carlton I have no doubt. We'll see great output from him just like we've seen from the Suns boys now at Richmond namely Prestia, Caddy & Lynch.
To have proper mentors like Crippa, Simmo, Eddie, Doc, Ed, Murph and the likes plus Andrew Russell - I'd expect Martin will be considered at the end of the season to be one of the best performed new recruits in the AFL.

Personally I don't think it will have much of an effect - but then again im not aboriginal.

To me it will all be about attitude and hard work (like any other player really) - don't think its been there the last few years at GC - hopefully the new environment and again, hopefully, a side on the rise will give him the right attitude and work ethic. If betts helps, awesome but I wouldn't rely on betts being the reason.
