Your club has been throwing $$$ at anything that moves for quite a few years now and for some strange reason your still not getting it. It's not all about money, you can't buy happiness.

We didn't this year because we have learned what Lachie Whitfield proved again.

Unless a big name player raised in Victoria playing for a non-Vixc team announces they are ON THE MARKET a la Tom Lynch, it is nigh on impossible to prise them out.

GWS have done fantastically well building their culture. That Breakfast Point initiative has paid for itself a million times over.

As long as a player is happy, it is difficult to get the to move unless you are offering something substantially better.
Whether that be more opportunity, more money, an better environment (in the players mind) or increased chance of success. And what is offered has to be important to the individual, for some a big pay rise will do it , others not so much.
Not sure why people criticize NM for trying to land a big fish for big cash. where they are right now, they have cap space, that is their competitive advantage they should use it. Had they landed Kelly or Dusty it would have been genius. They didn't, they lose nothing. If a player comes up they want they should again have a crack. Hopefully not Jezza or Zac though 😀😀😀

The pattern is continuing for the Giants. They are locking in the guys they absolutely wish to hold. Then the guys on the fringe will be the ones that may be used keep the 1st round pick generation rolling on - a self sustaining business model for maintaining top end talent coming through the door. If anyone is likely to leave, it will be someone like for example a Hately or Caldwell if they are not getting the game time and as such, clubs will offer up good draft capital and GWS will be well back in the 1st round of the draft again whilst not becoming any weaker due to the players they keep gaining via the draft. The AFL must be ecstatic at how GWS is evolving

Stoked that we managed to keep Lachie and it is looking likely Jezza stays.
As a Giants fan 2 things that are super annoying is that we constantly simultaneously hear how many players we lose and keep them all (which is true) meaning that every time there is a player at the end of a contract speculation is they are definitely gone.
Whenever one stays it is a big AFL conspiracy and we have pots of salary cap gold.
We have shed more players than anyone over the years allowing us to keep a core of players who really want to be there.
Richmond won a comp and signed the most high profile FA on the market, West Coast just signed an all Australian after winning 2 years ago. No talk of AFL conspiracy.
Everyone lauds the Geelong and Hawkes dynasty based on players staying for unders. Perhaps our boys a similarly committed.
Anyway happy Lachie has committed long term

Giants haven't kept them all. They have had to move on some big earning players. Some injured such as A fully an dd Patton but others like Shield were in their prime.

The seven year deals spread the $$$ over future years with cap increases helping. However at some point the Giants will lose a quality kid simply because the cap is maxed out. Then they get a good trade, then use that and a normal pick they get and land more top 5 talent.

Giants are set up for a long stint in the top 8. Ex exactly how the AFL wants it.

Having a very productive academy helps; this year they brought in two players rated Top 5 thanks to that, whereas most other sides don't have that level of talent coming in via alternative pathways. So likely Caldwell and/or Hately will leave for more opportunity whilst Green, Taranto and Hopper carry the torch as Ward and co age.

They're losing talented players like Adams, Treloar and Shiel, but getting good currency in return plus the academy guys allowing them a lot more flexibility than most clubs in managing their draft capital.

Agree we have lost plenty, think in my original post I wrote can instead of can't, which created a bit of confusion.
Having these top guys locked in to long contracts will see us lose a young gun or 2 along the way.

Actually think that and our failure to land Buddy has built the culture.

He was supposed to be our Ablett, and would of probably cost us Jezza and quite a few others as well as not getting Shaw and Mummy.

Missing out was the best thing that happened.

Agree entirely, massive blessing in disguise.

Let the Swans be the rah rah marquee theatre goer side.

You're carving out a great identity as a ruthlessly tough side.

The Giants knew Shiel couldn't kick - prime or not they got two 1st round picks for a player they didn't want to pay and were fine to lose. They keep the ones they want and deal for those they don't.

Signed Kelly - great foot skills, Signed Whitfield - great foot skills, Cogs very good by foot, Signed Greene - great foot skills. Good luck being a long term player at the Giants if you can't kick.

What have these 3 got in common!!

Greene isn't actually great by foot, Whitfield and Kelly both are and thus play the outside role very well.

Shiel was happy to stay, and could have done so once Scully was traded to relieve the salary cap issues, which is why Essendon had to pay through the nose. GWS by and large have kept the ones they're desperate to keep, whereas when a player like Shiel is open to a trade, they've extracted maximum value from the trade, whilst giving away a Scully or Patton for next to nothing to clear salary cap.

I wouldn’t engage Bill he has a very obvious agenda in this thread.

Very much agree regarding Shiel. Would hypothetically trade him for two first rounders in a heartbeat.

Funny given how many people have said with authority that they had a cap squeeze and couldn't do it.

Importantly for GWS the only free agent they have lost is Tomlinson who while a good player isn't on big money (see band 4 FA compo) and shouldn't be the difference between success and failure. Losing someone like Coniglio for pick 20 odd would've stung.

Outgoing players have mostly netted good returns (Treloar, Shiel, Smith, Lobb, Adams, Boyd) or been given away as salary dumps and they've managed to keep finding new players through the picks they get, trading for upgrades and academy bidding. It was inevitable they were going to shed players with a contracting list size and (deliberately, because of this) OTT start up concessions but they have managed it well.

2011 was 8 years go so GWS will start to normalise. They took 14 picks in that draft and only 4 of them are still there. 5 are running around elsewhere. They will still have Vic/SA/WA players wanting to leave but they won't have a core of high draft picks all hitting their prime again.

I reckon he makes a reasonable point. As good as those 3 are, which is amazing, none are great kicks.. perhaps the Giants for their ver top money earners prioritise kicking more than others. Rightfully or wrongfully.
Hopper is great by foot either, interesting when the big money comes for him next contract they let him go.

Seems overly simplistic to me especially when you consider as a midfielder Greene’s disposal let him down.

Had never thought about it until Bill posted it. Thought it rang true. I think of Green as being a great, especially as a forward. But it is a very small sample and as you say could easily be over simplistic view.. I thought it was worth considering somewhat.

Greene's disposal was very ordinary in 2012-13 but in his defence he was a great accumulator of the ball then. His kicking however has improved markedly since then(bit down this year)..Set shot he was clutch for a while there in 16-17
