Recommitted Lachie Whitfield [re-signed for 7 more years]

Stoked that we managed to keep Lachie and it is looking likely Jezza stays.
As a Giants fan 2 things that are super annoying is that we constantly simultaneously hear how many players we lose and keep them all (which is true) meaning that every time there is a player at the end of a contract speculation is they are definitely gone.
Whenever one stays it is a big AFL conspiracy and we have pots of salary cap gold.
We have shed more players than anyone over the years allowing us to keep a core of players who really want to be there.
Richmond won a comp and signed the most high profile FA on the market, West Coast just signed an all Australian after winning 2 years ago. No talk of AFL conspiracy.
Everyone lauds the Geelong and Hawkes dynasty based on players staying for unders. Perhaps our boys a similarly committed.
Anyway happy Lachie has committed long term

I don't know why everyone is trolling Hawthorn supporters. Whitfield was NEVER going to leave.

basically because Hawthorn supporters have been asking us to bookmark their posts saying the Whitfield to Hawthorn was a done deal for basically forever.

there's a thread on the Hawthorn board dating back to May 2013 (just after he had played game no. 6) saying he was Hawthorn bound.

it's been going on that long.

No, no, no. You claimed it was all thanks to Scully and Patton being moved on. Now you're saying it due to others as well.

As for boosting salaries, you keep saying this but have never provided proof to the contrary. We're going off what is reported and somehow you think you know better. Whether they're on a million or not is irrelevant anyway, they're close enough to the mark that the point still stands. Even clearing out Shiel and Tomlinson doesn't mean you have this excess of coin to pay 3-4 players significantly more. You do realise you have an entire squad that would have contract adjustments too right? Or are you just paying your stars more and fu** the rest? You've drafted in other players that need to be paid as well. Where exactly do you think that money comes from?

They were a massive help but moving in others as well means we keep who we want.

Proof? Why would I need proof (the figures you lot bring up show none) when everyone is so outraged over..... what exactly? Our stars re-signing when all you traditionalists expect them to run to "real clubs"

It all adds up.

$500k for Scully and $800k for Patton in 2020, reportedly. That's $1.3m for a guy who played 21/22 games and came 15th in his club B&F this year and another who didn't play at all. You would assume that from 2020 onward that it's a combined $600k-$900k for the two but that's not really GWS' concern.

One thing people seem to ignore is that players rarely make $1m contracts before they turn 25. Most get their main pay day when they are at or approaching FA status. Dusty, Fyfe, Danger... they weren't making $1m a year at 21. Chris Judd may have been but then he was Chris Judd. Andrew Gaff is on $1m a year, reportedly. But he's been with us since the 2010 draft. As a 3rd/4th year player in an established team (AA in his 4th year, played to a high standard from fairly early on) we weren't paying him max dollars.

GWS have a whole bunch of guys they've had since 2012. Other than Scully, Davis and Ward who were the Giants paying from 2014-2016 when they started coming good?

Dare say Most neutral fans are happy that Whitfield stayed at GWS rather than Hawthorn or another Vic club not their own

Most neutral fans are just happy when players don't go to clubs after supporters of said clubs carry on like complete plonkers months or years in advance of reported moves.

North fans probably started the ball rolling a few years ago with this but most have learned their lesson and are now more circumspect.

It's interesting the model GWS have gone with. I discussed this a while back, but they've gone with around 1/3rd of their team being paid 2/3rd's of the salary cap. Off the top of my head you'd have all of these players on more than 400K

Davis
Ward
Whitfield
Cogs
Greene
Cameron
Hopper
Taranto
Shaw

They'd want to keep Williams, Haynes, Perryman, Taylor, Daniels, Himmelberg, Kennedy, Corr, and Finlayson. Everyone else is fair game/won't be paid much. For every Whitfield, they have two or three Lloyd, Buntine, Keefe, Reid, De Boer's etc. that will make a fraction of what the superstars are making. First and second rounders get pushed out that aren't pushing for spots - Caldwell, Hately, Hill, O'Halloran etc. - after 2-3 years, and new first rounders are drafted. And so the cycle continues.

It makes sense why they can do this, as 30 or so players are probably being paid a cumulative total of 4-5 MIL or so, divided amongst them. That's why I think all these 'salary cap black hole' conspiracy theories, are just that. If they were keeping all their kids too, then I'd be a lot more suspect

Zac Williams will be interesting
On the open market he could probably get 750-800k a year

What can GWS afford tho

would they let the younger players coming off base draft contracts wanting a fair relative rise go instead like caldwell, hately and o'halloran
Don't spoil it too early. If you keep quiet or low profile at least you get bonar, if not you get nothing ( Kelly, dusty) .

So 7 solid years of Hawthorn supporters saying Whitfield is theirs and we’re not even allowed an afternoon of enjoying watching them squirm and eat their own words.

Seems fair.🤪
Can always invite us to your GWS thread.

Your club has been throwing $$$ at anything that moves for quite a few years now and for some strange reason your still not getting it. It's not all about money, you can't buy happiness.
