Three selections you'd like to see

Daicos - half back. I don’t think he has the size/strength to be a mid, however he has a neat kick, which could be dangerous coming out of defence.

Keane - preseason games in the seniors

T. Brown - midfield minutes starting in the centre square. Not sure if he’s added enough weight this preseason, but he’ll settle as an inside mid. We need to further fast track his development in 2020 via senior games.

Quaynor - wing. Won’t happen, but looks a natural midfielder with the way he moves.

Scharenberg - CHF / third tall, a preseason trial to see if he’s capable of offering us that versatility. In a forward line already containing Cox pace could be an issue.

1 game might not be a good measure, my thoughts are he needs development.

whats the thought on Kelly

I tend to agree especially one he spent in the ruck. On the basis of his best work at NEAFL and WAFL level he can hit the scoreboard, but given its state league mine’s an optimistic POV.

Unfortunately I don’t have any view on Kelly because of his injuries. He’s effectively a new draftee so you have to just buy in on the clubs decision to use him FWD. The only comment I feel confident making is that list structure wise developing his skills as a FWD is the right call. I’d have him 6-7th in line down back in the short term at least and 4-5th in line as a FWD. I think he’ll get a shot in 2020 if he stays fit and Cox struggles.

Could easily climb in Depth Chart up Forward IF he stays Fit

Absolutely. The guys I definitely had ahead of him are Mihocek, Reid and Cox. I then have him around the mark of Cameron and Wilson.

I don’t expect Reid to be fit for more than 10-12 matches throughout the year and if Mihocek goes down or Cox continues on with his form of 19 then he won’t need to do much to debut.

1. Somebody going past Mason Cox---as i just don't think he's our answer or solution to the big man department.
Tom Wilson somehow getting games would be a dream result.

2. Brayden Sier in the best 22 with continuity.

3. Somebody making it hard for Mayne to keep his spot in our best 22.
He's been good the last 2 seasons but i'd like to have someone with a bit more pace on the wing and who can kick further than 15m at a time would be ideal.

Sier is a common thread through a few of these, and I have to agree. We need him to be able to take on a big chunk of midfield time. He has proven to be good for 20 disposals on a consistent basis with 50% time in middle, and they are usually quite constructive and often good transition handballs from the inside to outside players. Very valuable. It would allow us to move a Pendles to a wing, and/or a Sidebottom more permanently to a forward flank, among other things. It would also help us free Treloar up to be a little more outside where he uses his burst speed (which he did for us really well in the first 4-5 games for us in his first year) instead of needing to do the inside work.

I would like Sier to work in tandem with JDG. When Sier not in the guts, JDG is.

That sounds about right. If Sier can get to 70% time on ground that means De Goey goes on ball at 30%. Seems a good balance to me.

I still think De Goey is more useful Playing majority forward. But I’d like to see him at more i50 stoppages, even when he’s forward.

Interesting to see people's thoughts on Bianco, some calling for wing, some for HBF. I actually could see him playing as an out and out mid similar to Sam Mitchell, similar size and the same elite skills either by hand or by foot. Being that player releasing another into space from a contest, or being damaging by foot going inside 50 or exiting the defensive 50.

Anyway selections for mine:
1. Sier playing in 20+ games. Could be our best centre clearance player, and if he and Adams can combine and free up the likes of Pendles or Treloar to be more damaging on the outside that only improves us.
2. Scharenberg to replace Mayne on the wing. I actually quite like Mayne and he has had some great moments for us, but it's time someone takes his spot in the 22. Shaz has the defensive nous to be handy dropping behind the play, and has the foot skills to be weapon going forward that Mayne never had.
3. De Goey to stay as a forward. I know some are tempted to push him up through the middle, but our forward line looks so much more dynamic with him in there. Not just with what JDG does himself, but the space and room he creates for the likes of Stevo, WHE and Jamie. I'd be ok with a 70/30 split between FWD/MID, anything more I feel like we'd lose something inside 50.

I don't know if this is right. We know that Elliott always struggles when De Goey is in the side (and forward) at the very least, but shines when he is playing the role that De Goey usually plays (e.g. the leading target deep in the forward line). Similar with WHE - he only really excels when he is the leading target from deep in the forwardline, and when De Goey is there he becomes that target. It is rare we need to consistently go to our third/fourth leading options when De Goey and Cox get most of the ball directed to them when there. Certainly sometimes, but that next tier of delivery gets spread across Stephenson, Mihocek, Elliott and sometimes WHE.

You raise a really good point around the other forwards excelling as the deepest forward at times. My commentary was probably more based around 2018 when DeGoey was predominantly forward, but the likes of Stevo and WHE had more of an impact than in 2019.

Perhaps spreading the deepest forward role between only the three of them was the key, we didn’t have Elliot in 2018, and maybe splitting that time between 4 players rather than 3 is the cause.

Another may be that we never really got a consistent look at all of De Goey, WHE, Stevo, Elliot and Cox in the same forward line. Could simply be that there is still a bit of learning and understanding between the lot of them about they all fit into the same F50.

Haha, I initially thought three, but ended up putting down five...

JB would like 3 from everyone else while he supplies 5 himself. He sees that as a fairer reflection of his relative talents ;-)

1/ IQ to take the Aish role. But with more speed and strength.

2/ De Goey more midfield time again, in a similar role to Dusty. Centre clearances for his stoppage prowess and then work forward.

3/ To try something different, Murphy to be tried up forward as an alternate roaming marking target to Checkers and Cox. With DeGoey starting more in the centre square and then drifting forward. Murphy heads down to the wing to offer leads as we are coming out of defence and utilising his aerobic capacity. He then becomes a defensive forward of sorts from the wing as opposition teams try and take the ball back out aerially via kick outs.

Already ahead of Appleby!!!!!

I think you should discount 2019 when assessing Appleby. Looking back to 2018, he was very promising. Injury has kept us from seeing where he was going as a player, but the signs then were very impressive.

I think the more accurate assessment is the totality of his performance to date. I’d say what we’ve seen so far is an acceptable stopping ability against smalls and little else. He’s currently on a modified program entering a career defining year as a 3rd year rookie so who’s to say it won’t be a further disrupted season?

I don’t expect he earns another contract based on performance and his future will be dictated by post 2020 retirements, IMO. Honestly I think he needs to pull a rabbit out to make it onto the senior given his last up performance was the worst by an individual Collingwood player in 2019.

One thing I've been wondering is whether we can fit both Dunn and Roughead in the same side. We often forget that Dunn was in the top 5 key lock down defenders in the comp before he did his knee(s). It we could have both manning the KPD posts it could free up Moore to either take Cox's role, Mihocek's role, or play as an intercepting third tall (which he would probably be pretty good at).

Assuming Dunn can get fit... I'm not sure it's a good combo. I think both are more suited to the deeper full back role. I don't think either would flourish at CHB and I'd worry about the balance with two negators. It does offer us more options though and could be a handy back-up plan if Cox or Mihocek get injured.

I'd love to see Dunn make it back but it's going to be tough for him.
If he & Roughy could hold down KPD places in the 2nd half of the year it would allow us the flexibility to throw Moore forward when our tall forwards aren't gelling. Moore is looking like a high quality KPD, but he would cause some opposition headaches if we switched him at any stage.
I think people underrate Dunn sometimes. His one on one contest stats were up with the best key backman in the comp. If only he was on Kennedy and Darcy on Darling in 18. :(:(

Wouldnt that be a rare luxury at Collingwood to have to decide which key defender to play instaed of playing the only one
