Autopsy Rnd 4 - Blues beat Bombers by 1 point

A crazy game of football that we can take away a lot of positives and plenty of things to work on.

Firstly, getting the win, regardless of how, is a great result for the players and club, two in a row, with winnable games coming up, is a good spot to be in.

Getting a young draftee exposure to AFL football is great, all though Philp really struggled with the step up in intensity, hopefully it will hold him in good stead.

Seeing a good spread of contributors across the ground was great, I always bang on about how many players we have who get under 10 touches or lay zero tackles, against the Cats we had over 10 whilst this game we had 4.

Plenty to work on regarding skills, we were very fumbly all game and failed to capitalise on our dominance, our goal kicking needs a lot of work too.

It was great to see, that after our hard work amounted to not much and the scum kicked 3 unanswered goals to go 2 goals up in the last, that we dug in.

Seeing Willow grow in confidence and Doc getting through unscathed make me very happy.

Strongly disagree all you like, A much better simple message would have been, have an impact at every chance you can get. To only hone in on the negative aspect of the game for a first timer, to me is terrible mistake. I hated how they had Polson so drilled down on tackle , tackle , tackle, he lost the art of hunting to get the ball itself and lost his creativity as a footballer. Hope they do not make the same horrible mistake with Philp.
It’s a pretty standard message though, especially early on when playing a small forward role. I watched an interview with Puopolo, the instructions he was given by Clarkson were exactly the same..... pressure, pressure, and pressure. It was nothing to do with goals. Keep the message simple for young players getting accustomed to the pace of the game. I think the issues Polson has had have very little to do with the message of bringing pressure.

Interestingly, saw a bit of toe-ing the ball to advantage in the ground-ball contest by Levi rather than getting down low for the pick up and handball (which he’s really, really slow at from previous seasons).

Thought it was great! Wonder if they’ve coached that with him?

Anyone else notice that?

was anyone else having negative thoughts when we went 12 down in the 4th? I was questioning everything! Why can't we kick straight, why did we bring in a little kid for Mckay etc etc.....Haha shows how much the mood can change depending on 1 or 2 points.

Seriously though, thoughts on old mate Philp?

For the short term, I see one of two roles for him. Either defensive forward applying tackling pressure with his speed, or have him chase around the quickets bloke on the other team each week

I might be showing my age here but he seems to me be a classic old-school 'rover'. I see him being in and under the feet of the ruckman and being an extractor.

TL, I’ve been working to become the best version of myself. Sometimes that means considering the feelings of others, and looking for the best in others.

But, yes! Out and out cheat! Why do they hate us?!?! Why?!?!
Happened all night. In the end the ump was thinking how can I gift them a goal. I know I will give a 50 that isn't there and turn it into 100.
I heard from a guy who knows a guy, that they had a pregame meeting to discuss ways in which they could ensure a Carlton loss.
Source is sketchy, but sounds feasible to me.
Utter disgrace!

You get that sinking feeling in your gut: "here we go again."

I started to feel it a bit, then I stopped. We kept doing what we were doing; kicking long along the flanks, grinding them up over and over until we got entry into the forward 50. We weren't generating many shots as we went in, but we were getting enough.

Their goals - the one before 3 quarter time, and the two just after the break - came completely against the flow of the game, and happened when we weren't set up behind the ball. At all other times, we were well set up behind the stoppage, with one of Doc or Walsh there to mark and go forward again. We believed we could do it; it was in the defensive effort of each player who went when it was their turn.

As long as I can see system, I can if not relax be at least a modicum of level headed. As level headed as one can get whilst screaming at the TV.

Attack the ball and the ball carrier. Get it in your hands and find a target by hand; look for Walsh, Murph, Cripps, Simmo, Doc, Setters or Cuningham. Look for the support, because it'll always be there.

Keep it simple, and give him a licence to run and tackle, but maintain the idea that he's there to hunt the ball. Defensive efforts are all well and good, but we need players whose job it is to hunt the ball and win it clear. His pace and roughness is needed more in close than outside or chasing, IMO.

I'm no boxer so i will defer to your explanation. Still i dont think there was any underlying weakness in Jack, just got him flush in a bad spot when he wasnt expecting it.

Used to drink with a nice old gent who was also a former State boxing champion. He always said there was one key to the sport: hitting the other guy as hard as possible in his bottom rib.

Just finished the replay.
Doc easily BOG
DC was great that he found the footy as much as he did but by his standard he used it terribly. Missed 2 goal and about all of his kicks inside 50. Can be even better
Newnes wont be dropped was solid and played his role.
Crippa and Martin won't play as badly again this season. Fumbled the ball all night and used it badly.
Setterfield had a great game.

Need to stop giving up cheap goals

We could direct our anger towards the muppets who introduced said rule - the rules committee and/or the AFL - for constantly tinkering with the rules to the point where the players do not hear about them prior to them being paid and the umpires don't take the fact that if Eddie's within the 15m protective zone so too were two Essendon players into account before paying their 50.

The game's hard as **** to umpire, and it's only made harder by the pricks changing the rules on everyone every single ****ing season.

Just because I turned the TV over to watch a nice comforting drama show after they were 12 pts up doesn't mean I lost faith. Just means I don't have the ticker these days to go through nail biters.

My name is MBR and I am a last quarter coward.

Don't know - would you classify Murder-Suicide as 'negative thoughts' ?
