Game Day Crows Vs Bombers

Only the mentally weak write 18 months of history into one game.

We had plenty of shots on goal in that last qtr, one goes through the middle and we win. That game was winnable.

I hurt like any other fan and I'm angry about a lot and angry at a lot. But we can't just wallow in self pity.

So I take that as a no? You're not aware of the 11 game losing streak? You're not aware of established performance. Sounds like you don't like data.

I wouldn't go around calling other people mentally weak Mr Alias account.

McAsey up forward looks great
Hammil off half back is brilliant
Keays is a BEAST
HOW GOOD HAS DOEDEE BEEN!!!!
Stengle forward pressure was great
Chayce Jones needs a rest
Can't wait for Fog and Milera to come back.
I think Himmelberg doesn't fit and Frampton should he playing instead.

You don't base the performance of one match on the last 11. That's a backwards looking view.

If you want to have a conversation about our last 12 months then by all means. But today we deserved to win and you can't just say "oh but we lost our last 10 so therefore we don't deserve anything"

Base the performance? This doesn't even make sense. If you mean base the judgment of the performance, well how are you going to judge a performance unless it is against previous performance? And often when you do that you notice trends in the performances, data points, trends and you can see if there is actually any real change between performances.

While the Crows improved in the 2nd half, it is hard to argue they deserved to win any more than Essendon. As for the rest, no one is saying that, so stop making s**t up.

I still have a beating heart

I was otherwise indisposed and the host wouldnt have footy on - so on phone checking scores and I admit to willing the boys on for the win. We had many opportunities but seemed to miss them
Both teams had a lot of inside 50s in the last quarter and wasted opportunities. Even that last handball to Smith, if that’s clean then he can steady and kick a drop punt. Instead, he’s rushed and forced into a tough snap under pressure. These are the little but crucial moments that we aren’t quite nailing atm.

I really hope they can breakthrough with a win against North, our form over the last 3 weeks is better than theirs and the younger players deserve reward for effort.

It is because we are woefully deficient in many areas, not least of which is upfront.

With maybe one or two potential exceptions the younger set many have screamed for these last couple years—are not nearly good enough.

Maybe one or two will develop but overall we seriously lack talent.

Everyone loves Doedee but the simple truth is he cannot stay on the field. As Bill Parcells was want to say over here, the only kind of ability that matters is availability.

It isn’t his fault but this is a bottom line business—win.

Until and unless we correct our talent deficiency there is only going to be losses stacked on losses.

High draft picks or not.
Bit hard on Doedee - he was rock solid until his knee, and this season was always going to throw up a lot of soft tissue injuries with the lack of training continuity. I reckon he'll be fine though.

I do agree with the rest of your post to an extent, although Im not sure yet whether its lack of talent or lack of talent development. Im willing to wait and see on a few but at this stage Im leaning towards lack of talent for most of them.

We are definitely on the improve

Essendon had a decent crack and they will be around the mark for finals

The skeleton of some kind of style of play is just starting to take shape. Go fast through the middle and come what may.

Young players are clearly being encouraged. Hamill caught HTB about 4 times last week, continued to attack the game this week regardless.

McAsey showing promising signs now that he is able to run and attack the ball. It was absolutely the right call to have Hartigan in as 2nd tall defender to release McAsey to fly for marks.

McPherson just fits in. Jake Kelly didn’t really do anything “wrong” but we dropped him to get McPherson going. Smooth mover.

Stengle starting to look like he belongs
Murphy 3 goals

Not great but definitely better than how we looked one month ago.

Still haven't watched a game live this year.

Thoughts:

Thought that was Hamil's best game even though we didn't see and sidesteps. Does not play like he looks.

Walker actually looked half decent. Same with Lynch. Smith a good response and laird is also looking better. We need our senior players firing so we can hopefully offload a few for some decent returns. Laird easily expendable now that Hamill and Mac have come on.

McPherson solid. Really cool head and a smart footballer. Looks like he belongs already. Good selection.

M Crouch finally played a decent game. Weird exchange from him and walker at half time. Didn't look great too be honest.

Not sure about McAdam. Haven't really seen his supposed weapons yet. Doesn't look overly clean and is still too weak. Gets caught really easily. Early days though.

McAsey's hands can be a bit hard. Hope he improves that area as he can at least get his hands to it quite often.

Stengle had a nice game except for that one marking contest. Creative little player. Getting his hands on it as well.

Jones had a real stinker. Looks to be over thinking and getting lost around the contest and around the ground.

Keays is getting better and better. Really proving me wrong on that one.

I understand it is a bit hard, but it is a bottom line business. Hopefully you are correct and he avoids injury next season but I sure as hell would not count on it.

Much better game today, hopefully the confidence will grow from almost winning a game. Unfortunately when you haven't won for a while, you forget how to win those close one's.

I'm still perplexed by our centre clearance stats though. We are getting smashed in the middle, in fact we don't even appear to be able to nullify opposition clearances, they are getting easy clearances even though ROB seems to be getting his hand to the ball plenty. We cannot continue to let this happen. Without knowing Godden's individual skillset, from the outside it looks as if he isn't the right man to be coaching the midfield. I'd consider him more of a general coach rather than a specialist coach.

Our defence has been outstanding thus far, the ball has been coming in frequently and often under no pressure, so for them to hold up the way they have is really pleasing. Doedee will be a big loss, he has the makings of being a brilliant footballer and an outstanding leader. Just seems to do everything right.

I'm not bothered if we don't win a game all year, but even 1 win will be a massive confidence boost, and I'm now finally starting to see a game plan taking shape. Unfortunately the lack of players skills doesn't seem to be helping it at the moment.

Good post and welcome to the board.

Thanks and thanks.

I must say I'm taking particular interest this year in how the team goes in this unknown territory (early indications aren't great), but we have to look at it as a journey, not a sprint. These (extreme) lows we are in will only make us appreciate the highs even more.

Not coaching, it’s about the players

Sloane, CEY and Greenwood our best three contested possessions winners last year. (Greenwood actually slightly below MCrouch but only because Don thought it wise to try him in the Lynch role.)

Sloane injured, CEY gone, Greenwood gone. The Crouches get most of their possessions uncontested.

Add that to ROB always being poor at centre bounces, as he doesn’t have the height or athleticism of the top rucks

Completely unfair to put that on Godden

Have to say, the issue early in the season was effort. For the most part that isn't a problem any more. Props to Nicks for that.

Some really good signs from younger guys. Hamill and McPherson should be locks now. Doedee is the player we (and Melbourne) hoped Lever would be. Keays looks to be a player that just needed the opportunity and drafting him now looks inspired.

McAsey, Himmelberg and Frampton will need extended time learning their craft, especially given our delivery has been abysmal. They don't have the fitness to make multiple unrewarded leads with every forward entry but that's what we're making them do. Go easy on them.

Brown, Laird, Talia, Hartigan, Lynch and the Crouches look some combination of unfit, mentally not into it or still stuck in Don Pyke's game plan. They all look like yesterday's men.

If fog comes back then neither frampton or burg fit . I think burg has more potential than frampton. I haven’t seen anything that I like from frampton

So kulak, you've taken my centre clearances argument and responded with contested possessions statistics. I can see a bit of a link but you can't compare your stats purely with centre clearances.

I still think there is merit in my argument. Many coaches have under rated the role of a ruckman at a centre clearance in history by stating that opposition players should be able to read his tap work. Why are we not able to do more of that? I still think the coach is considerably responsible.

Mind you, these said coaches obviously haven't seen Nic Nat in action with the silver service he is giving the midfield at times.

Next week we get another shot.

I'm not convinced of a win this week. NM are very good in the centre clearances which will give them first use of the ball and they have been having some good quarters in recent games, which may well be enough to cover our efforts.

Happy to be proven wrong, I'm getting sick of these 'Owen' jokes on social media :p
